Interesting fact, but David Bowie told all of his closest friends that Lorde is the future of music and so she was chosen to sing "Life on Mars" at David Bowie's Tribute show.
One of the defining pop albums of the century in my opinion. Really great production and incredible writing. Has a consistent tone and flow throughout. Sounds like you both agree so far!
Lorde is an unique artist, she has synesthesia and in an interview she said when she listens to Melodrama, she sees purple. And if you pay attention: purple is a mix between red (related to love or angriness) and blue (related to sadness or disappointment) and that's what you get when you read the lyrics and hear her voice. MELODRAMA DESERVES EVERYTHING
Yk there's always that one person who posts the time stamps under these kinda videos and I want you to know that you're an angel who should have both sides of your pillow cold ❤✨️
Pure Heroine (1st) is her second most acclaimed after Melodrama. Compared to the maximalism of Melodrama, both Pure Heroine and Solar Power (3rd) are pretty minimalism. Pure Heroine is very coming of age and Solar Power is feels like a very self-care, finding yourself album. Solar Power isn't very popular, a lot of people didnt like it but I find it so beautiful especially know the pain she's been through to get there. Excited to see yalls reactions
Not only a perfect pop album, but truly one of those albums that ages spectacularly. I’ve listened to it front-to-back hundreds of times and I’m still finding new things to enjoy about it. I highly recommend checking out some of her live performances from this album because those arrangements add so many layers.
20:30 The line “You’re all gonna watch me disappear into the sun” is a nod at the album that follows this one, Solar Power!! A lot of people dislike her recent album because it’s extremely stripped back compared to this one, but if you go into it knowing the context and understanding that it’s more about her finding her roots as a person again after all the fame, it’s so much more meaningful to listen to. You just can’t go into Solar Power expecting Melodrama because they were made in two extremely different points in her life.
I love this album so much. You can totally hear the way Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Gracie Abrams for example were all inspired by Lorde and many more young pop girls. It feels very clear as you both pointed out. I also think you were spot on that she was influenced by Taylor and Taylor vice versa. They are friends. Taylor kind of took her under her wing when Ella was going viral so young. I think they relate to each other a lot and have always complimented each other for their songwriting and bridges.
I'm sure Taylor and Lorde have massive respect for each other, but the influence can also be explained because Jack Antonoff, the producer of Melodrama and Solar Power, is also the main producer for like the las 5-6 Taylor albums AND for Lana del Rey. I used to love him (and still do, mainly for this album) but it has come to the point where he kinda reuses melodies and it's getting to a plain sound, I was really dissapointed by Solar Power bc of this. I hope he regains his past brilliance
Solar Power is excellent but I've accepted that by its nature it's sound could not be universally loved and that's alright. Anyway If ever I hear an album he worked on and don't love it I've realized it's at least 80% the artists fault and not his, because he's simply fulfilling what they want from him. Idk if you've heard Florence + The Machine's Dance Fever, but it's top 2 albums of 2022 for me with Beyonce's Renaissance & imo proof that Jack Antonoff is still a genius producer lol@@nikai0713
It's crazy that despite being cohesive, this album is not repetitive at all and manages to surprise and captivate us with each track showing layer by layer always taken while we listen. This album is a great experience, man! I get goosebumps even listening to it again
Lorde was 16 years old when the hit song came out. Lorde as a wise-beyond-her-years spokesperson for the Tumblr generation after she released her debut album, Pure Heroine, on September 27, 2013.
I think Taylor Lorde and even Lana in some ways all inspired each other's work around this time. Lorde & Taylor are/were really close especially during this time and you can definitely hear pieces of each others writing style or just how they go about songwriting in alot of their work that came out around this time and even after.
Omg melodrama is one of my favorite albums of all time to this day. It aged like fine wine and although it’s from 2017 it still feels and sounds fresh. It’s so cohesive.
Being 19 when this album dropped quite literally changed the trajectory of my life 😅 can’t count how many times I’ve listened front to back?! Melodrama is a true musical masterpiece
Same here!! It’s perfect to listen to at that age. I’m so blessed to have been 19 when it was released. God I love this album lol I wish every teen girl could hear this album
There's a reason a lot of the GIANTS of the musical world, including David Bowie, called Lorde 'the future of music'. Her lyricism is so evocative, poetic and abstract (compared to Taylor's straightforward, but still poetic, storytelling style of lyrics), her sound being so unique, etc. I love Taylor, but Lorde definitely edges her out.
My dad is no longer around and seeing you listen to new music with your dad is so meaningful to me. My dad loved female songwriters, I wish I could’ve done this with him
olivia rodrigo has taken lots of inspiration from lorde, i mean it’s so apparent on her debut single drivers license. but i don’t think anyone is able to do what lorde does quite as good as lorde. and olivia’s only the prime example because she blew up. but a lot of new artists have taken so much from lorde it’s crazy to witness seeing as lorde is still so young and only 3 albums in
Melodrama is a complete piece of art. I wish I was exaggerating, but it truly is one of the best albums of the 2010s and of the 21st century so far. I'm so excited to see both of you get into Lorde's short but excellent discography. - Pure Heroine is Green. A coming of age sunset hangout with friends, socially and politically aware, introverted teen angst album. - Melodrama is Violet and Royal Blue. A deeply sad drunken walk home after a party. Desperate, fiery, reckless, "melodramatic" early 20s heartbreak album. - Solar Power is Golden. An introspective mental health break from society album. An "I have issues but I go to therapy" state of mind, a freshening shower and coronas after a day at the beach, a quiet and relaxing enclosed family late lunch in the afternoon... All three albums are stellar, I really hope you enjoy them as much as we do :)
Lorde actually wrote royals and the whole pure heroine album when she was 16 and wrote melodrama at 19 which is insane, also solar power her last album is amazing yet so underrated bc ppl were expecting something like melodrama but it wasn't, it's more of the opposite sister of pure heroine
Supercut is her actually moving on and looking back to the relationship that ended. She was just looking at the good parts, but the final lyrics were a repetition of “in my head i do everything right”. This was her actually relapsing, that’s why the start of the next song says “I’m a liability”.
"Perfect Places" is my favorite track on the album, probably. Musically, it's great but maybe not the absolute best, but thematically it ties up the album marvelously, ending with a keystone for Lorde's deep (and at this point, trademark) ambivalence about her generation. On the whole, I think "Melodrama" is my favorite album of the past decade.
Dude I could write an entire essay about how much I love Perfect Places lol. On first listen it sounds like a party anthem, a high note to go out on (like the guys were talking about here), but her vocal delivery sounds desperate to me. And it ends with such a deeply exhausted note. The lyrics capture her anger and exhaustion and deep sadness about where she finds herself in the world, at having fallen back into the cycle of melodrama. Lorde was inspired by Greek tragedy when creating this album, and I think that's particularly clear in her choice of outro. Instead of ending the album with the Liability (Reprise), where she gathers her strength and pushes back against what she's been told to think she is, she ends the album with her tripping back into this cycle she's just brought us through. She hasn't found the peace she finds on Solar Power. (I'd actually argue Solar Power isn't her 'perfect place' because 'what the fuck are perfect places, anyway?' and the third album is more contentment than perfect happiness, but I rest my case) Anyway I have a lot of Perfect Places and Melodrama feelings lol. It's prob my favorite album period.
remind you this is before Billy Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo ,Alicia Cara , midnights by TS, before The Weekend , Halsey and many more so at the time of it’s release this was super revolutionary, lady Gaga , Lana del Rey ,Taylor swift among others inspire so many after them.
Melodrama is not only an album, it’s ✨an experience✨. Lorde is, in my humble opinion, one of the best lyricists of this generation, so incredible. While Melodrama is by far my favourite album out of her three, I love all of them. The thing about Ella is that she manages to capture very specific feelings and moments in time in her songs and projects. Pure Heroine came out in 2013, she was 16 and she sings about the pains and joys of growing up so well. Melodrama is the perfect rollercoaster of a breakup. Solar Power was criticised when it came out in 2021, and after the high that was Melo, it did feel much more laid back, but I personally needed it, I needed the healing and grieving it brings about. It’s exciting seeing people experience her for the first time, I hope we get the other two albums sooner rather than later, this reaction was a joy to watch🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Lorde influences everybody. She's changed how pop music is made on multiple occasions. People will tell you to react to 'Pure Heroine' next. But I think 'Solar Power' feels right for you two. :)
Someone said under a different video “About MELODRAMA: This entire album was produced to "synthesize" a SINGLE NIGHT PARTY of someone who had just left a relationship, went to a party, got drunk, ended up meeting his same ex at the party, kissed him in and then came home thinking you had the worst night of your life for being with the person who hurt you when should love and care for you.” And honestly once you know this, you listen to this whole album differently
I have to admit this being my first time watching your reactions I was a bit scared when you started listening to the album and your dad's face was stoic. I'm so happy you loved this album. This album is absolutely iconic. One of my all time favorites. She didn't win the Grammy because she refused to go the Grammys because they didn't want her to perform her own song. She talks about it in Solar Power. She was 16 when she wrote Pure Heroine. This album was released when she was 20/21. She is a genius. Taylor Swift first worked with Jack Antonoff on 1989 and Lorde and Taylor are friends so when she was looking for a producer, Taylor recommended Jack and they KILLED IT with Melodrama. And actually Taylor used Lorde's old producer (the one from Pure Heroine) for Lover. Hard Feelings / Loveless is my favorite song from the album. It's such an amazing song sound-wise. I like how you said you felt like something was breaking and it was hauntingly beautiful because I feel like that's exactly what it is. "These are what they call hard feelings of love", when you love someone so much and they leave and you feel like you're breaking... Lorde said that she envisioned this album as a house party with different rooms. And the songs are different rooms. Liability is finding a room with just a piano and sitting there, away from the party, and singing. I also think she talks about her relationship with fame. "What will we do when we're sober?", "All of the things we're taking 'cause we are young and we're ashamed...".
Lorde mentioned the sound build up in Green Light as a musical forest! To me, you can really hear it from 1:50 to 2:00 in the song and it makes so much sense, it's grand, kinda intriguing and honestly unsettling, which makes this song objectively one of the masterpieces of our generation
I also love how the latter part of the song sounds like a car revving up like it's just dying to cross the intersection. Best album opener of all time.
Another one of those albums that critics, popheads, and musicheads alike all love. It's just so well written and catchy but at the same time its intriguing and innovative.
I'd recommend you check out her debut album, 'Pure Heroine', next. Totally different vibe but still very Lorde and breathtaking for a literal's teenager first foray into music. It's a more nostalgic album than Melodrama.
i cried uncontrollably during the bridge of Hard feelings too, my first visceral reaction to a song. I love how Lorde can precisely describe a general feeling yet still make it so personal.
So excited for you to listen Solar Power!! Melodrama is definitely her best album in my opinion but, Solar Power and Pure Heroine are extremely good albums too. She's a incredibly unique artist
i wish i could experience melodrama for the first time again.. this one and pure heroine are masterpieces, and the fact that she wrote pure heroine as a young teen is crazy!! can't wait for your reaction to that album
I'm so happy you did this !!! This is one of my favourite album ever and I know WORD FOR WORD I KNOW EVERY LITTLE SOUND because I listened to it so much and still is not enough after 6 years
i love watching melodrama reactions, and you guys had so many cool insights about the songs, it was so refreshing hearing it with you guys after listening to it for years now. i love this album and it sure has a lot of impact in many people (listners) not just artists.
Perfect Places is such a beautiful song. I remember someone explaining it simply as "looking for something that doesn't exist" and it's just melodramatic.
thanks for reacting to one of my favorite albums ever !! lorde is such a distinct poet in pop, its nice to see it so greatly appreciated like this. her debut album Pure Heroine is equally as impressive and my personal fav of hers and i hope u react to it soon :]
"It's pop but it has balls" ❤ that's Lorde's music in a nutshell and she's influenced Taylor swift, Chapelle Roan, Olivia Rodriguez etc Like Bowie said Lorde is the future of music
This is genuinely my favorite album of all time. I’ve been listening to it daily for years, it’s grown with me, lyrical meanings have evolved along with me. 😭💕
the first time I ever sat down and intentionally listened to an album front to back was this album, and I have never listened to music the same. changed my brain changed my artistic vision
Lorde and I are the same age and in a lot of ways a felt understood since 2013, Pure Heroine is in her words an album about “teenage angst” and I completely agree with her. I think my top 3 is Melodrama, Pure Heroine and Solar Power but each of them are so unique and beautiful. Great video as usual guys!❤ PS. Also (not to diminish any artist’s work but) to this day I cannot believe that Bruno Mars got album of the year and not the masterpiece of Melodrama🥹 (she was the only woman nominated that year for aoty).
Oh I loved your analysis of Hard Feelings / Loveless because I feel like they are actually very complimentary to each other. It IS a an incredibly sad uncontrolled ride without breaks.
This was easily my favourite album of 2017, and definitely in my top ten of all time. It's so rare to find an album that is both a collection of amazing songs, but also such a flawlessly cohesive single piece of art. It HAS to be listened to in order, from start to finish. I'd love to see you react to a Lizzy McAlpine album, especially her second one, "five seconds flat". She's a very different musician to Lorde, but I also enjoy the way she tells a story over the course of an album.
So so glad you two loved this album! It’s severely underrated in the mainstream but is incredible and holds up over time. Now i need to go re-listen so i can appreciate the Pink Floyd and u2 references
ooh I was hoping for this reaction. Melodrama is one of the best albums ever imo. The writing, the imagery, production, all of it is so cohesive and it’s such a good mix of different songs it really never gets boring
My favourite thing to do on UA-cam is to watch people experience Melodrama. Such a great record ❤️ I think you should listen to SAWAYAMA by Rina Sawayama
watching reactions to Melodrama are so amazing because the album is just so top tier and seeing everyone discover it’s incredibility is an amazing journey
something I’d recommend and that I’d think you guys could at least appreciate is her 3rd album Solar Power. a lot of fans were disappointed when it came out because they expected it to sound like melodrama but it was meant to be different and reflect how she felt during her break/quarantine. it’s a fantastic album imo and one I come back to often especially during summer. it’s definitely more chill than this one, especially production-wise but it’s still produced by jack and has some great sounds. my favorite is the last song on the album, oceanic feeling
So glad you finally reacted to this. Olivia Billie both are influenced by lorde. She's just awesome. This is one of the best pop albums that shaped upcoming pop artists so much.
lorde is unique on so many levels! pure heroine is amazing but melodrama set her apart from other pop artists for me. it showcases her talents in a different manner. loved your reaction!
I think what makes Lorde so good is that she is just experimenting with things she finds interesting at that time, and that blends really well with her almost autobiographical writing ability. It all comes together successfully because it is just an honest exploration of herself.
I love how Lorde captures the intense emotions of a person. Just like what she did to Hard Feelings. The way your dad expressed the kind of emotion that you will feel during that bridge.
OMG i just realized that in “liability” she says “you’re all gonna watch me disappear into the sun” and then she disappeared/ didn’t release music for 5 year and the put out an album called SOLAR POWER! she’s actually a genius
Just discovered you guys and love the reactions you do! I like how you guys aren’t afraid to be honest and don’t necessarily like everything, it’s so refreshing to see. This is one of my top 3 albums for sure, I’m glad you loved it. Wishing you both well!
I am so pleased to see you react to this! This is my absolute favourite album of all time - I revisit it at least once a week and still find new things inside the songs even now years later. I would love to see you react to her other two albums, but especially Solar Power! It is not only a brilliant album, but such a powerful departure from the sounds and moods of Melodrama. I think you would both find the shift really interesting!!
A true classic! "Homemade Dynamite" and "The Louvre" are particular favorites - "The Louvre" drum breakdown felt like it reached into my chest and ran off with my heart that first time I heard it.
Pure Heroine and Solar Power are sooo good! Ribs, Buzzcut Season and Team from Pure Heroine and Secrets from a girl who’s seen it all and stoned at the nail salon from Solar Power, Lorde is just so good

So glad you two listened to this album. This is one of the best pop albums I have ever heard. Can't wait for you to hear the rest of her music.
I like how sober 2 is so cinematic.
I think what makes Lorde so unique is the feeling she imbues in her voice and music. Everything feels incredibly raw and unpolished and genuine
I wish I could listen to this album for the first time again. It's a magical experience
This is one of my favourite album ever and I know WORD FOR WORD I KNOW EVERY LITTLE SOUND because I listened to it so much and still is not enough after 6 years
One of my favourite albums ever.
Probably the best reaction I've ever seen to this album. Thanks for helping me relive listening to this masterpiece for the first time❤
i love watching melodrama reactions, and you guys had so many cool insights about the songs, it was so refreshing hearing it with you guys after listening to it for years now. i love this album and it sure has a lot of impact in many people (listners) not just artists.
It's amazing how we still talk about this album to this day despite it coming out in 2017
I was about to crack down on studying but this video caught my eye right before I could get up and fetch my books 😍
Okay watch but then study after 🫡
Stay in school 👍
@@mightymike9469 update: i passed all my exams
Perfect Places is such a beautiful song. I remember someone explaining it simply as "looking for something that doesn't exist" and it's just melodramatic.
thanks for reacting to one of my favorite albums ever !! lorde is such a distinct poet in pop, its nice to see it so greatly appreciated like this. her debut album Pure Heroine is equally as impressive and my personal fav of hers and i hope u react to it soon :]
I missed this album so much, I’m so happy y’all reacted to this
Melodrama and Lorde first album "Pure Heroine" are pop bible and created AND inspired the new wave of singer like Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo...
Lorde is a multi-generational artist. David Bowie loved her, as did many others before him. She will hit hearts for decades to come.
"It's pop but it has balls" ❤ that's Lorde's music in a nutshell and she's influenced Taylor swift, Chapelle Roan, Olivia Rodriguez etc Like Bowie said Lorde is the future of music
Every lorde album is an incredible and unique experience
This albumm is so amazing that i listen to it start to finish in a daily base.
Lord is unique.
Great video as usual guys!❤
PS.
It IS a an incredibly sad uncontrolled ride without breaks.
i would give anything to hear this album again for the first time
This album is everything
every time i listen to this album i cry....every time i watch people react to this album i cry. god im so melodramatic.
Named by rolling stones 7th best album of the last decade out of 100 albums btw
So so glad you two loved this album! It’s severely underrated in the mainstream but is incredible and holds up over time. Now i need to go re-listen so i can appreciate the Pink Floyd and u2 references
Oh bro, i can't believe your dad finally reacted to Melodrama!
I did❤
i'm so happy you guys liked the album!!!!
If you listen to Perfect Places, and then listen to the next album, Solar Power. It's as if she has arrived in her perfect place.
ooh I was hoping for this reaction. Melodrama is one of the best albums ever imo. The writing, the imagery, production, all of it is so cohesive and it’s such a good mix of different songs it really never gets boring
My favourite thing to do on UA-cam is to watch people experience Melodrama. Such a great record ❤️ I think you should listen to SAWAYAMA by Rina Sawayama
watching reactions to Melodrama are so amazing because the album is just so top tier and seeing everyone discover it’s incredibility is an amazing journey
something I’d recommend and that I’d think you guys could at least appreciate is her 3rd album Solar Power. a lot of fans were disappointed when it came out because they expected it to sound like melodrama but it was meant to be different and reflect how she felt during her break/quarantine. it’s a fantastic album imo and one I come back to often especially during summer. it’s definitely more chill than this one, especially production-wise but it’s still produced by jack and has some great sounds. my favorite is the last song on the album, oceanic feeling
seeing people reacting to melodrama for the first time is one of the great joys of my life
One of my absolute favourite albums of all time ❤
MELODRAMA IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME
Yesss best reaction to melodrama I’ve seen, you got every detail and felt all the emotions, love ye for that 🫶
❤
So glad you finally reacted to this. Olivia Billie both are influenced by lorde. She's just awesome. This is one of the best pop albums that shaped upcoming pop artists so much.
lorde is unique on so many levels! pure heroine is amazing but melodrama set her apart from other pop artists for me. it showcases her talents in a different manner.
loved your reaction!
I think what makes Lorde so good is that she is just experimenting with things she finds interesting at that time, and that blends really well with her almost autobiographical writing ability. It all comes together successfully because it is just an honest exploration of herself.
In case you don’t know, Melodrama was described as a single night taking place over the course of one night at a party
Loved the Reacting to Supercut!!!!
YAAAAAASSSSS NOW PURE HEROINE AND SOLAR POWER PLEAAAAASE
I am so pleased to see you react to this! This is my absolute favourite album of all time - I revisit it at least once a week and still find new things inside the songs even now years later.
I would love to see you react to her other two albums, but especially Solar Power! It is not only a brilliant album, but such a powerful departure from the sounds and moods of Melodrama. I think you would both find the shift really interesting!!
Love your reactions on Hard Feelings / Loveless it's one of my top 3 from the album.
