All spirits, at this time, were considered treatment for some condition. If you were wealthy and a hypochondriac you might feel it necessary to have a dozen or more drinks every night. Ha!
I listen to the stories for both relaxation and for knowledge. Sherlock holmes has taught me a lot which has helped me in my own cases. Thank you mr Holmes for teaching me.
This and the Hound of Baskervilles are the two stories I read when in school and what a vivid memory i have of Mr.Henry Baker’s hat 😄 Thank you for bringing this story back to me and the memories attached.
There is no doubt that Sherlock Holmes stories are beautiful and lovely But the reason I like more to listen to the story is because of your magical voice that's why im listening to it every day . Thank you buddy ❤❤ 😇
It's nice to hear that somebody (perhaps many somebody's!), do the same thing! Listening to these throughout the night 🌃 brings a certain comfort in these crazy 🤪 times in which we find ourselves.
Loved it. I am really getting into the habit of listening to your audiobooks regularly, they are so magnificent. It always cheers me up. Thank you for the many hours of joy!
Loved it! I'm surprised that The blue carbuncle wasn't on Doyle's favorites list, it is an enjoyable and clever story. "Watson, you can see everything. You fail, however, to reason from what you see. You are too timid in drawing your inferences." Honestly, Who wouldn't be hesitant to tell his inferences to Sherlock Holmes? Despite what he said, Dr. Watson wasn't stupid he was, after all, a medical doctor and he was often able to follow Holmes's reasoning.
Plus Holmes never hesitated to tell Watson how completely wrong he was whenever Watson would dare try to make a deduction! As brilliant as Holmes was, it would have been a challenge to be his friend. ☺️
Mine, too! And ACD's, so we are in good company. Dr. Roylott is the worst of all Holmesian fiends. He raised those young women from infancy. Yet he thought nothing of slaughtering them in the foulest manner, just for a few extra pounds for himself. 🐍
@@copernicus6420 youll need to use some of Holmes powers of deduction if you wish that to be answered. Why would a student get a good grade for listening to the information found in this story written by Sir Doyle?
Geese don't have crops and they digest and pass their food in 2 hours. So it's not very plausible but ACD didn't know those fun facts about geese. (I have lots of geese.)
Spoil sport! Their are many things you can pull apart example why did poor old Henry Baker get some of the reward? Why did they leave obviously innocent man in prison whilst allowing the snide guilty man to go completely free???
No my good man,In the days of Sherlock all things are possible! Please refrain from pointing out known professional facts as it distracts from my enjoyment of things I am ignorant of…😂😂😂😂
The Blue Carbuncle my favourite Holmes story closely followed by the Hound of the Baskervilles 😊. A self confessed Sherlock Holmes (the original ACD stories of course) NERD. Loving these audio stories thank you 😊🎉
during my Navy days based in Portsmouth I used to walk past the site of Doyles GP surgery on Elm Grove, it is now the site of flats. Not sure how much use of Brandy he prescribed though !
Just saw the Jeremy Brett version of this on TV and I was a little disappointed that he kept the carbuncle! So I decided to listen to the original, here, only to find that the only mention Holmes makes is that it stays in his "Museum" and that, unlike Brett's Holmes, he doesn't even get up and free the accused! Would the readers, back in the day, be rightly expected to assume that he would do the right thing; return the jewel in some way to make it appear was never stolen in the first place and we're just not sophisticated enough in this day&age to make those connections?
I never before noticed how many times Watson ejaculates. I've relistened this playlist from the beginning the last few days. This is the third or fourth time. It's amazing how words usage changes with time.
This always makes me wonder--what about the police who found the stone? If Holmes wanted to keep it as a souvenir, would the policeman ever get his thousand pound reward?
He would never do that, the reward went to the doorman mr Baker mistook as a policeman hence he ran! Always thought poor Mr Baker should have had least half the reward? Sure his wife may have loved him just a little???
Poor guy and his wife that actually found the stone didn’t even get the 1000 pound reward money. Would have been life changing for them. I remember thinking that decades ago when I first read this tale and still think of that when I hear it told.
Ryan W. I assume that Holmes got the reward plus some extra --he said he knew that the owner would give half her fortune to have it back--and then did pass along the reward money to the actual finder.
You can’t conclude that from the text. You are ‘assuming’. And, based on what we learn about Holmes in this and other stories I’d bet he DID give them them the money.
One of my favorite Sherlock stories. I guess because it's centered around Christmas. Fyi - Peter Cushing plays Sherlock in a tv adaptation that I like to watch every year around this time.
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Totally! Lee was an awesome actor too. I love the old Hammer Films. And, who can't forget those Vincent Price editions of Edgar Allan Poe stories. Ahh, the good old days of film making.

I don't know if these are in order but you would think the Watson would have been able to deduce that the hat was of good quality. After all they were as familiar with hats as we are with sunglasses or something similar. A modern person can usually tell a quality pair of glasses over cheap ones especially if one wore them every day. The mistake Holmes makes is to assume a large head signifies a large brain and that a large brain signifies high intelligence. Einstein had a smaller than average brain.
Good evening everyone, some months ago, I wrote a comment asking help to find a story, I got some answers but no one can identify it, so I decided to listen to all the stories in order to find it. Here I am, 6 months later and I did not find it!!! I am truly starting to think that I dream this and it doesnt actually exist!!! It starts describing a very cold and foggy day, sherlock its at the basement making a lot of noise and watson is reading something, then at dinner sherlock tells watson something about a very important experiment (something about bullets being fired, i think) and tells him that if he wants to know about this he must promise to stay at home and not talk to anyone, watson accepts this and sherlock goes back to the basement; then in the middle of the nigth a friend of watson arrives at the house and ask him to receive him. Thats the part where I always felt asleep. If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful!!! I am sure that im not creative enough to dream the story by myself but I listened to all the stories here, even the pastiches and I CAN NOT FOUND IT, maybe I dont remember correctly or I dont know... help please!!
I know the story you are thinking of. But it's not an ACD story. It's one of many written about Holmes and Watson by other authors. It's here on UA-cam, or at least was until recently. Try listening to ones read by Benedict Cumberbatch, I think it's read by him. Hope this helps.

I called on my best friend in the two whole days AFTER Christmas to tell him Merry Christmas. He is all alone in the world; has no other friends and just one reclusive brother. Holmes was looking intensely at a hat when I entered. He looked busy, so I almost left.
Whereas, on another occasion, having received a letter from an old friend who was mopey, I walked in on Holmes who was at the crucial point of a chemical study that was about to decide the fate of a man's life and I plopped right down to wait.

@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Absolutely! So I own this volume, The Final Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett on the cover) which contains more stories but also literary paraphernalia. The real contenders are the short stories "The Story of the Man With the Watches" (1898) and "The Lost Special" (1898). They are written in Holmes' voice. That's so funny. 'Ejaculate' only means the male orgasm nowadays. Mary Morrison was the reason that Watson ejaculated so much.
