    Thank you for sharing your experience with stratifying seeds. When I did the warm and cold stratification none of the Saskatoon berry seeds sprouted. However I found that after soaking the seeds for 24 hours and only cold stratified for 90 to 120 days the Saskatoon Berries seeds started sprouting after 90 days in the fridge. As they sprouted I potted them.

    Incredible Seeds from NS Canada. We stratified 10 butternut for TWO years in a fridge and got 5 from 10 seeds. We also done PawPaw from the same company and got 100% germination (they do not like to be transplanted).

    Put some aronia berries in some kefir or yogourt. It makes them easier to eat.

    You did really well! I also got NO Saskatoon's out of 20 seeds...NO Oregon grapes...and NO American plums! And I've been doing this for a few years now
    I got most of my Antonovka apples to germinate, but only one crab apple. Bad seed lots?

      Don't be too hard on yourself brother. I suspect there are alot of seed purveyors on the internet that are also still learning as they go and don't quite have their collection and storage methods perfected yet
      I have had greater success collecting my own seeds as I have complete control over the whole process. Great concise videos btw. Just a friendly tip...I notice with alot of videos where when showing close-up shot of roots,seeds,etc that the person is not thinking about the background that will show up in the shot. For example, like showing you close-up of a snowball and the guy is wearing a white T-shirt! Or showing you a detailed procedure on a paisley tablecloth. A neutral colour in the background, like a plain beige or faded denim or a soft red is more contrasting. Don't worry, your colour choices are good. I like your infrastructure with various light/heat/moisture requirements. You've really this through! Good luck with all your projects and let me know how the pawpaws turn out. Your honesty is refreshing and rare on here.

    You began another video on stratification of maple seeds that you ordered. Instructions you read, said to stratify the seeds for 120 days. That time's gone by and was hoping to see how you go through the next step. I jusy collected Paperbark Maple seeds that I put thru the soaking process today, and will lay them in soil for 120 days. But what's next? Best way to get them into a pot, or plastic flats...I'm curious. Thanks for a great video, and ...THUMBS UP!!!

      @HagonjonesHomestead  9 місяців тому

      Hi. Thanks for checking out my videos!!
      Once you have soaked them they will need to go into moist soil for the 120 days. You could use deep cells seedling trays or a deep container filled with soil with the seed planted evenly apart.
      Keep them cool (fridge) for the 120 days and then bring them out into a warm area. 21 Celsius at a minimum. A light on a timer or a south facing window as well.

      Hello. Could you elaborate on your comment? "just stick the stalk in the ground".
      'Stalk'? Are you refiring to cuttings,,, Kinda like the way I multiply my grapes.?
      Just Cut off or trim back the new branches/ shoots in the fall. Then Skin off some bark at the bottom of a 2' branch, apply a dab of ROOTONE & stick them into the ground or large pot. They will start to bud & grow roots in the following spring. Then i wait till fall to replant them under my arbor.
      HOW'S THAT SOUND? R U Multiply your elderberries the same way??
      THANKS

    Hi there, I'm a fan of your work. Living in Portland, Oregon, not sure if it is possible to grow the Mazzard Cherry but I think so and really want to try. Where did you get your seeds? I would like to find a trustworthy source of seed pods for this tree. Thank you for what you!

    Is it true that Maple seeds need 4 months of stratification after soaking in water for at least 24 hours" I can't use the house frig. would it work in the garage mid Nov. for until mid March? Plus don't they need to be in the dark for at least 3 months of that time? My garage gets very cool through winter.

    • @HagonjonesHomestead

      I kept them in my barn one year and they worked just fine !

      Did you soak them for 24 hours before storing them and what way did you store them? Were they buried in a little bit of dirt prior to the long storage of 1 year? I have literally hundreds of seeds from a very large Sugar Maple I needed to cut down in my yard. My goal was to create some seedlings and plant them all over town...see what happens, LOL.@@HagonjonesHomestead

    • @HagonjonesHomestead
      @HagonjonesHomestead  10 місяців тому

      That sounds like fun!!
      Soak 24 hours
      Put them into moist soil 1/4-1/2 inch deep
      Keep in a cold location over the winter, garage will be perfect.
      If they are under soil they should be dark so light is not really and issue.

    Hello There! I've watched 4 or 5 videos on stratifying & potting heart nuts,,,, or even any type of hard shelled nuts in general, & it seems like nobody mentions if it is necessary to CRACK those very hard heartnut shells open before the nuts are potted? I'm wondering if it would help the percentage of germination? (Carefully use a vise)
    How long, usually, before the seedling pops a root? What temps do you try to keep those potted nuts at?
    Also,,,, I have a problem with some of my chestnuts, white oaks, pink buckeyes & heartnuts. Way too many of the nuts are MOLDY when I bring them out of the fridge in spring. I sun dry all of my nut seeds for a week or two, & I use a reasonably DRY peatmoss potting mixture when I harden off the nuts.
    ANY THOUGHTS, SUGGESTIONS?
    I see that someone suggested putting a tablespoon of Epson salts in a gallon of water & use that to dampen the medium used for hardening off?
    Have you ever tried something like that to prevent molding?
    THANKS,, For any guidance.

      @HagonjonesHomestead  Рік тому +1

      Hey! Thanks for checking out the vids!! Let's answer those questions.
      - Is it necessary to CRACK those very hard heartnut shells open before the nuts are potted?
      No, the seeds will naturally crack themselves. My new way is to remove the stratified seeds from the fridge, leave them in the container, and put them somewhere at room temperature. Then I check the nuts every other day to see if they have started to sprout. I only put them into pots once sprouted. Great way to only fill pots for viable nuts.
      - I'm wondering if it would help the percentage of germination? (Carefully use a vise)
      I truly don't think so. I am happy if I get a 60% germination rate.
      - How long, usually, before the seedling pops a root?
      This would depend on the nut, but I usually start seeing sprouts about a week after removing them from the fridge.
      - What temps do you try to keep those potted nuts at?
      As mentioned above, I now move all nuts out of the fridge and keep them at room temps ... ish. My shop temperature fluctuates drastically in the spring, but I try to keep them above 15 Celsius. I only plant them into a pot when I see roots or the nutshell cracking. Once potted they sit in an unheated area where temps can fluctuate from 0 Celsius to 25 depending on the day.
      Mold - I haven't really had an issue with this, but have had some mold growing in my containers. When I do, I use a 10 to 1 hydrogen peroxide mixture to kill the mold. For the stratification mixture, I am now using a 3 part mixture of Sand, Peat, and perlite. Maybe that will help lessen the mold.
      Hope I got all your questions
      Mike

      @@HagonjonesHomestead Yes Mike,,,, You did well, answering my questions! Is there a way that I could send you some pictures? lol,, one good pic= a million words, sometimes.
      FWIW,,,, I'm constantly ordering trees from 'Columbiana SWCD'. N E Ohio. I just received 12 dormant PawPaws & 2 very nice, healthy looking heartnut trees,,, along with 3 dozens heartnuts,, that I'm gonna TRY to start on my own. I HOPE they were properly stratified.
      Potting medium.
      My local store, Ace hardware, sells a sandy 'potting' mix & a processed manure.
      Do you think that i would run into any problems going with a 60-40 mix of the two? Or should I just use the sandy potting mixture alone? I just don't want to LOOSE/ or kill any of these nut seeds!
      & THANK YOU, Very Much, for the quick, helpful feedback.
      Jerry

      Hey Jerry,
      Send me your email and I can send back pics if I have any cracked sprouted seeds. Then I will delete the comment.
      I would avoid Manure for your young trees. Just a little bone meal for root growth and potting soil with no nutrients.
