    I just put 30 chestnuts in the same container You purchased. I didn’t completely cover the nuts. I live in middle Georgia so the nuts have just recently all fell off the tree.
    These Chestnuts come from a 20’ tree, five to seven yrs old and they’re 3rd generation chestnuts from the original 20 yr old, 80’ tree. Great Video! Thank You.

    No refrigerator for chestnuts. I Plant them flat side down in recycled pots with potting soil 1 inch deep. I place them outside and bury the pots half way in the garden. They go through winter and get cold stratified. The refrigerator in my mind does not prepare the tree for true climate outside. In spring when temps are above freezing, I plant them. They should have a tap root and be careful not to separate the nut from the stem. Gently plant them in a location of your choosing. They need 10-20 feet spacing. I have a 90% success rate in our plants, We have 5 grown trees, 4 about 25 feet high which are producing, and planted 30 this last spring which all are growing. We are planting 50 next spring. Note: I place a 5 foot stake and metal fence cage around the trees when planting outside. The deer will chew at them if not guarded. I place 10-10-10 fertilizer just outside the tree perimeter each spring. Not much, maybe a tablespoon amount. As the tree grows, watch for rubbing branches. The damage will cause disease. Cut the branch not growing outward near the base when dormant. Chestnut trees give out a unique smell each spring. This is to attract insects for pollination. It smells awful but is required for pollination. Watch for Japanese Beetles after pollination. They eat the leaves and damage the trees. I use a non toxic repellent called 7, or seven. It is found in most chain hardware stores. This year with 5 trees, we harvested 30 water pales of nuts. Wait for next year, smiles.

    I bought 1-1/2 pounds from the grocery store for eating. After getting them home I decided to try stratifying 10 of those seeds. I checked the other day and I have got 3 that are growing and 2 more that look like they're going to sprout too.

    It takes 15 to 20 years for a chestnut tree to produce more seeds. I hope you have a lot of patience!
    My Buckeye or Horse Chestnut tree took 15 years.

    Your moss seems a lot wetter than mine... I wish they would give us a number in the directions like "add 1Kg water per 10Kg moss" so we dont have to guess.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I thought mine was too wet also. So I left the lids off in the fridge for a few days to help some of the moisture escape.

      Nice job on the Stratification. I've been doing the moss thing for years. I use the Mosser Lee Long Fiber stuff. I soak it good for 1/2 hr and then squeeze everything back out. You want it like a damp sponge. I Try not to let the nuts touch each other, just like you did and keep them just above freezing. The colder the better or they sprout in Jan. For the mold, Look into using Hydrogen Peroxide as a wipe on the petiole to prevent the fungal growth.

      @@Qingeaton Thank you. Last year I did the plastic bag method and they molded. I just ordered 25 for this year and I'm getting ready to try again!

    Thank you for the tips. Funny thing, like, less than a minute before you said it, I was thinking: Maybe I could put them in peat (sphagnum) moss instead of on wet paper towels. XD I guess that might have been a good idea. I'm gonna test it.

    Use warm water for quick peat moss water absorption

  • @dcsoxford
    @dcsoxford 6 років тому +2

    It may be the acidity of the peat moss that inhibits the fungal mould.

      Probably 40 to 60 will grow into trees. And out of that probably 30 to 40 will survive after 2 years. I want lots of chestnut trees to bring deer onto the property.

    The directions with the chestnuts said to add holes for ventilation. Did you leave the lid on the Rubbermaid containers loose?

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  6 років тому +2

      No I didnt. The containers were too tight in the drawer to leave them loose. I might drill holes in the lids, since they were only $2 a piece.

      Actually I tried and I was able to leave the lids on loose. Good idea!

      I would look for peat moss at a garden center or home improvement store. It has some antifungal properties. I have had 97% germination rate the last 2 years.
