I've lived in Nakano ! I can vouch for Saikoro , it's amazing. Nakano itself has so many amazing other restaurants tho. If you love curry, hit up Trico Curry.
I'm sure Frank has gone to Aoba in Nakano. I'm wondering what he thinks of it. I tried it a long time ago (i think it was 2008) and enjoyed it. There was a lot that I didn't know back then (like the ticket machine is where you pick what you want). Nakano Broadway itself has some nice gems of eats (like the kari-pan that Shizuka had in one episode). I'm also glad the first episode of this ramen adventure is not tonkotsu. Out here, it is all anyone wants and it is boring to have ramen shop after ramen shop serving tonkotsu. Fish broth is practically non-existent outside Japan (I know there is probably a few but I haven't come across one in the city I live in). I think the up and coming flavor is tori paitan. I've gone to three shops and each one is different. That's how it should be, but maybe that's just me.
You have an answer from Frank: "Great question! This bowl is probably in a category by itself but the cuts of meat and the way they're presented / the niboshi (dried sardine) soup do remind of Kitakata style. Stronger with the niboshi though vs Kitakata."
Actually, there is scientific proof that the type and shape of chopsticks used to eat ramen actually affects the overall experience. When I went to Japan in 2019 and had a ramen tour every night, I will bring a pair of my own rod chopsticks made of real gold/silver. Disposable wooden square chopsticks just doesn't gives me the same experience as the oil and flavour does get stuck on it as compared to metal or plastic rod chopsticks and therefore affecting the flavour. You can try this experiment yourself next when you're having a bowl of ramen with a pair of disposable wooden square chopsticks and a pair of metal/plastic rod chopsticks.
Sadly as someone who's had a gastric bypass - slurping up ramen would be quite difficult. Bringing to much air into my mouth as I swallow food, leads to food getting "stuck" in the pouch that is basically my stomach now and that is not fun to say the least. Which kinda sucks since I know slurping the ramen (with the broth bring picked up as much as possible) is a big part of the experience of having it to begin with. Not only does slurping help with cooling it off as you eat it but as I understand it it also helps with flavor etc. Regardless, this ramen looked delicious, as most ramen I've seen in Japan lol Japanese ramen shops just seem to operate on another level compared to other places I think. I know ramen was "invented" in China in the mid 1800's or so and made it's way to Japan - but Japan just owns ramen now basically.
The bits of Japanese language lessons you need to navigate this are very handy! Keep doing that please!
bruh this guy is a ramen scholar 🤣 only dude i can watch eating ramen without being grossed out
Look forward to hosting the next one! 😃

Would you consider this to be a Kitakata style bowl? The niboshi and soboro sound tasty for that style, looks delicious

They fill it up good

Wooden chopsticks always the best, those metal or plastic crap chopsticks spoil the experience🍜👍🏿

As always...SLURP is the best way to eat Ramen right? 🍲
Yes 👍
Now THAT's a Ramen!
Yes that’s the ramen
so if these first few are about meaty bowls - when are we going to have veggie bowls? ;)

Next episodes with Shizuka are coming too. We hope to provide a variety of Japanese food content via the best people in their areas.

I, too, have wondered why people slurp their ramen. I have my theories, but it would be nice to hear the facts.
In the next episode, Frank will share three reasons. Wait for it :)
Hei frank
Whats your instagram is?
4:45 😱bruh its a face mask, not a gasmask 🤦♂️
See i can't do super fishy flavor. Id have to find a Ramen spot that does pork chicken or beef. I do not like fish broths
ii naa
love ramen but wayyyy too salty
Warning there is no Shizzy Anderson in this episode so a total waste of time.
