As a total newbie trying to learn about which system to begin with and invest in, this video was perfect. It's the first time I actually understood the difference between double and single rope. At first, I thought double rope mean two separate ropes, one being a safety or back up. Simple, but for someone new, an easy mistake to make. Also agree that the micro tree is awesome for demonstration. Thanks for helping me learn.
I’ve been searching for a video like this. Been looking for a tutorial that really explains the growth from double to single.
wow. haven't climbed since I was in my early 20s .. and that was in the early 1980's
I'm now in my 60s and wanting to fix my trees so I starting looking to get some gear .. oh my, there certainly has been some evolution from the double rope and prusik system we used (with ship ropes). There is a mind boggling around of paraphernalia these days.
Thanks for the evolutionary line walk .. I was one of those at the beginning using what is now called DRT. Those days it was the only technique. From memory our fitness was such that we coped with hip thrusts. I certainly could have used a bridge. We just attached from a central point on the harness. As for getting around, well we were limited. For broad crowned trees we worked out of cherry pickers.
I'm keen on what you call SRT given its superior manoeuvrability with 'redirects 'and I'm liking the friction saver set up in a Canabase? way.

I've used 2 independent systems many times( not the way you were showing, I've never seen that setup before, that's really sweet! ) and absolutely see the benefit of that "technique" of climbing.

Nice video, but I don't understand the benefit of using bowlines in rigging and alpine butterflys in climbing applications.
It is primarily so the people on the ground know which is which. The life line is secured at the base of the tree along with the speed line which is also anchored at the base of the tree. If the lifeline(climbing line) is cut, or untied on accident the climber might fall to his death 💀

This was an *outstanding* presentation for two principal reasons: 1) It was very well planned and there was methodical steady coverage of all the relevant considerations; and 2) the model tree lent itself really well to the approach - far better than would a 'live' video from a tree. Interestingly in this it is similar to ua-cam.com/video/hgp9f7RbHRU/v-deo.html (Soren Satellit's rigging video) in which the animations are more powerfully supportive of the narrative than would be a series of live clips. Well done Jeff and all involved!

Is multiple ropes out of the question when drt for repositioning? Instead of having to climb up and re-direct while SRT, throw an rope for another DRT system to gain that "coulmn shape" you mentioned; maybe alleviating unneccessary fatigue? (I am not an arborist, just an hobbyist that has been learning and climbing this last 2 years, not in production,.)
Awesome vid. In the uk srt is still not widely used but it is so underrated hahaha
In the UK as of Dec 2019 we have had to use two ropes, basically a work positioning rope and a fall arrest rope. It's a pain but can be achieved, I use the normal work positioning rope with a ZigZag and a second rope 10.5mm LSK attached with a Camp Goblin + Goblin sling. It takes more time to climb which makes jobs more expensive for the clients. This is not the only system tree climbers are using in the UK, but the principles have to be adheard to due to The Working at Height Regulations 2005 ( HSE).

at 19:26 How do you move the SRT line when its tied in to the other side of the tree? I know you do not UNTIE or UNSET the SRT but if the limb you need to work on is further out than you can reach and lets say 110 degree angle, HOW DO YOU REACH OUT THAT FAR? (caps for emphasis and making a point/idea) Its too far to push away/push off the main trunk so what do you do?
We just climb to the top with spikes, tie in, start working. Saddle, spikes, rope, and 1 or 2 safety’s. After you are tied in groundsman sends you a saw and rope to lower limbs if needed.

If you have a srt harness can you still double rope?
Yes! SRT harnesses typically mean that there's a connection point intended to make single rope climbing easier, but there's no reason you couldn't climb in a DRT system with one of those harnesses.

If I weigh 185lbs..+ 25lbs of gear..what Diameter rope is good to use for SRT..1/2" be sufficient or some other size..?
Your weight shouldnt matter too much. Thicker ropes are easier to grip though.
How do you get your rope down after you tie into the canopy with srt?
tie a long zing-it line or something to the knot, before you cinch it all the way up...when yer done.... just pull it down?

learn some history jeff. morgan thompson created, patented, and had the first srt device in production, through rock exotica, a few years before kevin got the rope wrench into circulation. the first device on the market for srt was the unicender.

Why use a sling to get throw line over a limb when you can use a toy flying drone with fishing line, and fly it over the limb and bring it back down
When you weigh 160lbs thats all fine and dandy but when you weigh 250lbs like I do the 2:1 mechanical advantage in the double rope system is your friend and its less strain on my big ass than using single rope ..... strap 90lbs to yourself and try it

an easier way to get around a tree all 360 Degrees just go to the highest point of the tree that you can get to before cutting any limbs try to get above all the limbs that you're going to be cutting and tie a 360 degree round the tree circle with your rope with rings in the Rope 3 inch apart through every ring secure a 30-foot drop cord and then it's old school from then on just go from one 30-foot cord to the other that's already secured and that's already hanging as you work your way around the tree, end of problem solved ,forget having to slow down and make all these separate knots all these separate connections you made one connection up at the top of the tree completely and circling the top of the tree with all the different rings in that circular connection with 30-foot ropes from each ring secured you've got all these dropcords hanging down and you can just grab one after the other as you work your way around the tree then afterwards just dissemble it all

Temptation to one-hand my chainsaw? The saw is DESIGNED to be used single-hand. I VERY rarely would use two hands on a climbing saw.
