The Groveland Four: Florida Pardons Men Falsely Accused in Jim Crow-Era Rape Case in 1949

  • democracynow.org - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has granted posthumous pardons to four young African-American men accused of raping a white woman near Groveland, Florida, in 1949. Two men were brutally murdered as a result of the false accusations. The case is now seen as a racially charged miscarriage of justice emblematic of the Jim Crow South. The story of the “Groveland Four,” now 70 years old, has continued to haunt the state of Florida. We speak with Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America,” and Carol Greenlee, daughter of Charles Greenlee, one of the Groveland Four.

@@BeingKyleBusch18 The interview isn't even about the governor, but more about exposing the hideous injustices that took so long for the state to acknowledge. Ms Greenlea said her family was relieved at the clemency because her family has lived with a stigma for so long, and I would not deny them this moment that they've fought for for so long.
If you figure out how to dismantle systemic racism by yourself, I'll cheer for you, but it seems that deep social change requires mobilizing a great mass of people, so I wish you wouldn't diss your black brothers and sisters--and other allies.

It's crazy, I grew up in Groveland and I've never heard of this?!?!? Why didn't we hear about this at south lake (which was the only high-school in Groveland in the 2000s). As scary as it is there was tree they called the handing tree when I was growing up. I don't know if it's still there but the racial injustices that happened there will forever leave scars. There's even an area referred to as the quarters bc it once was where the slave quarters where (or at least that what people said). The city literally did nothing to help the people who lived in the homes there. It seemed like no money from the infrastructure budget went to help maintain the road and sewage issues. Just so sad.

I am highly bothered by the interviewer cutting off Mrs Greenlee when she was trying to answer her question and then after she told about going to visit her father as a 3-year-old and how she had to grow up without him and feel like she was doing time with him, that the interviewer had no compassion and seemingly no empathy for the child. She just went straight to the other guy and talked about the government and bureaucratic bull. Mrs Greenlee I am deeply saddened for what your family had to go through. None of this was alright, none of it at all. God bless you ma'am.
