  • I explain the EASIEST way to understand how to set up these questions and answer them. The key is to write an equation for the Revenue NOW and then another with the changes added for Revenue MAX Once you have this equation it's as simple as finding the zeros, add them up, divide by two and you have the NUMBER of changes that need to be made to maximize your revenue. NOTE the NUMBER of changes does NOT equal the new price.
You will still need to substitute in your x value to find the new price and the number of items sold at that price.

On the factoring question, when you do this -15+20/2 on the parabola, are you dividing by two just because or is it the number of things sold if there’s a decrease(I have a similar homework question but the number of sold things starts at 4, so would I divide by two or four?) 18:08

I am dividing by two because I have the two zeros of the graph (where it crosses the x axis) and in order to find the maximum or minimum value I need to find the axis of symmetry, so I’m finding half way between these two values by dividing by 2. Just like if I asked you what is the halfway point between 10 and 20 (which you intuitively know is 15) the actual math is to add 10 + 20 and then divide by 2. Does that help?

Does it matter if you use zero product rule or complete the square? I prefer completing the square.

Using the zeros and finding the axis of symmetry and then the maximum height OR completing the square are both good methods. Depending on what your teacher asks. I think understanding why and how they both work is important.
