    illustrated below, a frame for a picture is 212 inches wide. The picture enclosed by the frame is 5 inches longer than it is wide. If the area of the picture itself is 300 square inches, determine the outer dimensions of the frame?

      Let the width of picture = X
      since it is told that length is 5 inches more than width,
      we can say length = x+5.
      Area of picture = length * width; area given is 300, plug it in equation, as well as our other values
      300 = (x+5) * (x)
      300 = (x)^2 + 5x
      use 0 = a(x)^2 + bx + c
      0 = (x)^2 + 5x - 300
      Factor this, i used photomath lol
      0 = (x+20)(x-15)
      Length is 20, width is 15
      So these are your dimensions for the picture. Pretty stupid of the question to say the frame is 212 inch wide.
      Since it is 212 inch wide, this means it is wide on all 4 sides
      The dimensions for frame are length = 20 + 212; Width = 15 + 212
      L = 232; W= 227
      I am just in grade 11, dont trust this solution too much lol

    im confused at 6:33 point - Where does the 4-4 come from? Why did you do that, couldn't you just have not put that part in and added 600 after -4x was written in the equation

      It's a part of the process of "completing the square", a step necessary in converting this equation to vertex form and thus ultimately finding the vertex. I recommend you look into it prior to jumping directly to this problem, as it will only continue to reappear in other maximum/minimum word problems :)

      @@gabrielle591 This was 7 months ago so I don't really remember but I think it was because x=2 and (6+1x) turned into 8 and (100-10x) turned into 80 once you replaced the x with 2.
