A Broken Door on this Bad Order Hopper Car

- This bad order rail car has a broken door and I will show you a new door and
tell you how the old door is taken off and new door put back on, plus
show you the brand new door ready to be installed and then after it
is installed on the rail car.
Our rail cars get an extreme amount of use from normal hopper cars
on most other railroads. Plus these Trinity cars were built in 1995 and 1996
so they have a lot of years on them. It's amazing how they keep on going
with only the minimum amount of break downs. A true testimony to
how well Trinity rail cars are built to begin with. The cars we have built
by Freight Car America in 2007 don't seem to hold up as well as the Trinity
cars even tho the FCA cars are much newer.

Thanks for showing us the broken car, the new door, and the finished repair! I think it's cool that you guys not only have the talent on staff to keep all of this stuff rolling but seem to keep adequate spare parts on hand as well at least for the common wear and tear components. And wow 6 loads a day 365!? Those cars are almost 30 years old and have had 10 times that wear and tear put on them! Cumberland Mine getting their money's worth out of them!
Glad you enjoyed the tour Shane, not something a whole lot of folks
ever get to see. You are right, they certainly have gotten their money's worth out of those cars! Thank you so much for the nice comment and for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.
You never disappoint. You know your stuff, almost makes me want to work for a railroad (UP said I was overqualified 5 years ago when I tried 🤣)
Glad you enjoyed the tour Ray, not something a whole lot of folks

Cool ... and no, I don't mean the weather. Thanks Dave for another look behind the scenes and in the shop. Always something new with each visit. Stay safe brother.

Thinking you would be pleased they found that broken door before it was out on track with a load Dave! Interesting video as always. Thank you 🙂
You are absolutely right in those thoughts, much better to catch it

Great lesson in how the dump doors work on the Trinity hopper car series! Nice that give praise to those repair folks, they deserve it. Keep providing these excellent videos.

I'm sure even a one broken hopper means lost revenue for the coal mine. The repair looks great. Thanks Dave for giving us this unique inside look at the hopper repair and the amount of daily stresses put on them in general...
Not necessarily, they have some extra cars sitting around at the harbor just for this reason. If a car breaks bad enough, they set it out at the harbor and rotate one of those extra cars into the train. No down time except the time it takes to set the broken car out and couple the replacement car in.

Like the note: Broke Door. And the arrow, too. Clever!
Again, thanks for explaining some things, like what makes it hard on the cars. I'd never have known about high degree curves and jointed track bothering them so! Yet it makes sense when I think about it.
Very glad for the cool look into the area with the door removed. Reminded me of my dad giving me a peek underneath the car or when he had a wheel off for brake repairs.😊 Glad that door is fixed! Looks real good now, too.
Best way to note the defect. A big old note "this here part is ducked!" will get your attention if you're about to put coal in it, that saves you a long week with a shovel and a crowbar.
Glad you enjoyed the video Trena. Appreciate the nice comment.

Broken hopper doors are a nightmare on any bulk flow job especially coal so nice to see you are keeping on top of your repairs. If I understood you correctly each train set is dumping six times a day. That means twelve loaded trips and empty returns in twenty four hours. That is one intensive roster you are running there Dave. I take my hat off to you and your colleagues in keeping your railway in such great shape. Well done to all
That is correct Ian, 6 loaded trips back and 6 empty returns. It sure
does created a lot of wear and tear on the cars and on my track!

With all of the parked bathtub coal gons and demo'ed coal plants maybe your company could look into picking some up and invest in a rotary car dumper. Just throwing out ideas.......... Excellent video, thanks Dave!
There are a lot of rail cars out there just sitting around unused you
are right on that Poowg. It would take a considerable amount of down
time to redo our train unloader, a lot of lost revenue. If you saw
the lay of the land here, it would be almost impossible to build
a rotary dump beside the current dump site. But do appreciate your
thoughts. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.
Always something that needs to be repaired......You do a great job Dave!
You are right about that around here Jeff. Everything is old and well
used and things do break, but that is job security for the mechanics....:-) Thank you very much for taking the time to check out the broken hopper car door show my friend.

Glad you enjoyed Kathie, not something a whole lot of folks ever

It is interesting how well the various equipment pieces work for such lengths of time. I remember watching coal cars being unloaded at one of our coal-fired plants some years ago. It was quite the eye-opener - they used a rotary dumper. That is where the whole car is basically rotated upside down. Quite the sight and as I remember, it was a bit slower to do the whole train than I had thought. I mention that because the rotary dumper also has to inflict some substantial stresses on the coal cars. As you mentioned how much use your cars get, I was impressed with their construction. That is a lot of use and it's done carrying a harsh commodity that can be acidic at times. The coal dust must also get everywhere and create extra wear and tear on the cars. I think you folks are doing well with the cars at hand. Thank you for the up-close look at the workings of a coal car!
Really glad you enjoyed the video Brian. Thank you very much for the nice comment and for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.

Always something to fix. Better the door was found damaged before it opened and dumped a load of coal on the tracks. Stay warm working out in this cold weather.
You are so right about that Beverly, preventing a door from opening while the train is coming down track is invaluable. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.

I have watched innumerable Conrail trains roll by, loaded with coal for Milliken Power Station and I never thought to look underneath the cars. Thanks for showing us how the doors work.
Incidentally, I just learned that Milliken Station (or Milliken Power Plant in its later years) shut down on August 29, 2019. Guess I missed the memo.

or other on it David. There are currently 2 cars in there now. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Hi Dave and good morning my friend. Yeah your little mining railroad does see a lot of work and those cars do get a heavy amount of work.
At least the bad order was spotted and the car pulled out of service before it dumped its load out there on the line.
You’ve shown plenty of videos before of cars dumping their loads out there on the line.
I follow trinity rail on social media. They have a big fleet of rolling stock.
Have an amazing day and stay warm in this bitter cold.
God bless you my friend
You are right Johnathan, so glad it got found before it dumped

Thanks for this video.
If the doors break more frequently, that's from the cumulative strain of extreme use. The patterns of failures should be studied, and refabricated with different material and designs to stand up to the demands put on them.
Your certainly welcome Robin. You are right about what you are saying. However the company that makes these doors is delighted
to sell us all we can purchase, not sure they want to make a better
door, less sales? Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.
You guys are made of the right stuff!!
Thank you for the very kind words Thomas. We try here to do what
we can with what equipment, time and man power we have. Appreciate your watching the broken door show my friend.
Fun as always! I noticed that there is wording on the car that says "radient heat only"? Why is that there? Best guess on my part is maybe that the doors can freeze shut with ice?
Glad you enjoyed Jeff. These cars are aluminum so coal can
freeze to the sides and doors a lot easier than if they were steel cars.
Many places have radiant heat to thaw the frozen coal out from
sticking. Think a loaded car for a week or several days on a trip to
a power plant. So they pull a car into a big shed that has
radiant heat before dumping. The radiant heat doesn't damage the
aluminum. On our cars without a radiant heat shed, the coal can
freeze and stick to the doors so the doors won't shut properly.
I need to do a video and explain all that and what we do to try
and prevent coal from freezing, you just gave me a good idea to
do that video! Thank you so much my friend for checking out the
broken hopper car door video tonight.
@@ccrx6700 Plus if you whip out your propane burner to thaw the car, you will catch the coal on fire!

It's always something!
There is a company here in Portland, Gundersons, that makes rail cars. There is a side track 60miles from there where they store cars waiting for delivery. One time I saw almost 3 miles of cars waiting to be sold and delivered.
It certainly is always something here Michael with all the old equipment we got to work with. I only show a small fraction of what
all else breaks down. From what I hear the market for new rail cars
is pretty small so I can understand a lot of new cars sitting around.
Now, most won't even build new cars until they get an order for them. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.

Unfortunately the RR i lived buy since 1980 the lumber mill shut down was the last customer on the line, the trimet Max light rail took part of it in the late 90s early 00s and part of the line that goes over the coast range washed out, at one time it was a booming RR with lots of customers but slowly went away either started using trucks or went out of business, I'm going to miss seeing the trains, I'm from Oregon North plains
Yes it is sad when a RR shuts down and no longer runs, trucking
has taken a big part of the business away from the railroads. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.

I wonder if that bottom row of fasteners that got removed and replaced with conventional bolts was to allow easy alignment of the sealing flange and easy replacement of the sealing flange with conventional tools not a cutting torch which would be insane for coal dust .
It very well could have been Wayne, my fault, I should have asked the
mechanic why they did that, apologize for me not knowing. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Great video Dave never got to involved with Hopper cars not I've seen how it comes apart thanks
Glad you enjoyed the tour Gary. As you can see not much to hanging a

so the doors shut tight that's the trick. Thank you so much for the nice comment and for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.
And these cars are held on the trucks by pins. Thse pins must really be something!
The weight of the car pretty much holds them down on the center
bowl on the truck set bolster Shirley, those steel pins help keep
the car body in place on that center bowl. Thanks for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.

I can see why there are quite a few door failures with them being used to much, each time they open they get knocked about with the weight of coal on them. I hope you can show how you treat the coal in cold weather, I heard over here they spray something that helps stop the coal sticking.
Yes I will show that spraying the cars being done at some point,
thanks for the suggestion Cedarcam. Appreciate your taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Thanks Dave I want to see a bit of detail on that gantry. I think all you have shown before is on the steps on one you showed the coal being unloaded
Thank you for showing this! I have not seen a door like these in full before. Difficult to say from looking at it, but it looks like a hefty fine door. Anywhere between 200 and 800 pounds, I'd guess, can't tell how thick the metal is. When you have a hopper door open on the track, is that typically due to the center portion you showed that sometimes rots out? Or is it the linkage, or rather the lock instead of the door that lets go?
You are welcome 2xKTfc. We've had car doors open because of the
center rotting out where the linkage bolts in and also from a lack of
air on the cars when there are worn out safety latches and worn
linkages. So it's both of your suggestions that happen. If it's a worn
safety latch then all the doors open, if it's just a center rotting out,
then only 1 door opens. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Thanks Dave, great video! That's a lot of usage, and no grease fittings on the door pins?
Very glad to hear you enjoyed Fred. No grease fittings on the pins, that is correct. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
Cool video i learn something new watching your channel. Dave What does it mean on the car use radiant heat only ?
Glad you enjoyed the tour Michael, not something a whole lot of folks
ever get to see. Many places have a big barn that is line with radiant heaters because coal can be shipped a long way and will freeze in the cars, so they have to heat the cars so they will dump. Because the
cars are aluminum they can't use any other source of heat than
radiant heat. Radiant heat won't catch the coal on fire either. Thank you so much for the nice comment and for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.

Glad you enjoyed the tour Dennis. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.
Interesting
Very glad to hear you enjoyed Rex. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
Interesting, Thanks Dave! OK, @ 7:20 the hinge weld. IMO The door hinge is fitted up loose, it's bolt is tightened after adjustment for fit, then welded up by someone that is much worse then me in HS. That weld looks Horrible and it isn't just looks, it is its STRENGTH. Welds can look bad just globbed on & still have some penetration & strength, that one doesn't look to have either. Maybe it's just their way of tacking until a pro can finish the job, but the pro sure won't appreciate all the clean up & prep now needed.
That is an overhead weld probably using 7018 rod and the flux does that, the weld is smooth under the flux The welder didn't want to get hot slag chips down the neck.
@@paintnamer6403 Thanks!
I hadn't noticed that Alro, you are a better observer than I am! Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
The door is open manually. Or is there an air cylinder. That opens the door. To dump the coal. These. Coal cars pass. Hogue road Westside of Evansville Indiana. Heading to Mt Vernon. Ind. River loading facility. Coal coming from Princeton Indiana mine or Fransico mine in Indiana. Thanks for the video.
These doors are air operated Dan. Some hopper cars have the doors
which require a guy with a bar to open them, thank goodness we
don't have those type of doors here! Thank you very much for taking the time to check out the broken hopper car door show my friend.
I would imagine that coal dust packs in around those joints, it gets wet and just holds the moisture and rusts the doors out.
Coal dust contains acid and it does rot out metal Bryan. It's hard on
my spikes and track bolts too when it lays in the track. But that's
the nature of the business we have here, can't get away from coal! :-)
Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Do you give the coal wagons an say annual service and inspection to find faults.
Or is it cheeper to have a door open or other fault and then fix or scrap the wagons.
Thanks for your technical videos.
Every time they get dumped the dumper looks over the cars, plus
there is a roll by inspection done almost every time a train leaves
the harbor, so daily visual inspections are made, however to pull
a car out and take it in the shop only happens when something
is found wrong, not just for inspection purposes Anthony. Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
I would say that old door was doing it job until it physically could no more. I'm not even sure if they make now new Hopper cars? If they do the price tag would be very high. What would be the expected service life on these Hopper cars? Thanks in advance.
Yes they do still make new hopper cars Steve, however it happens
when a customer orders them. They don't make cars unless there is
an order for them. In 2007 we bought 10 brand new cars and
at that time the cars and transportation were 90,000 per car. So
I would rather imagine it's a lot more now, but transportation to us
is very expensive having the truck the cars in. The AAR sets typical
rail car life at 50 years. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Extreme use an understatement. I worked cars that dumped and filled every 30-60 days. Wish you had a hopper-door-crew to sort and test these hoppers. Just a hydraulic pressure gauge on a Porta-A-Power ram can verify those door lock-overs. I wish I was closer, but dentistry keeps me close to DFW. Keep up the great videos and content.
Wow, wonder how nice our cars would be if they only got dumped
every 30 or 60 days halfinchholes! Thanks for the nice comment and for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
6 or 7 times a day
Wow that is a ton of coal !!!
Yes it certainly is Beaver, they like to run coal here! :-) Thanks for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
The The cost of equipment must mave replacing or cars very expensive particularly due to having two trucks them in to your railroad.
They looked at some newer hopper cars last year Mack. Cost was $20,000 per car which is reasonable. Then for NS to bring them to a nearby siding plus have Corman truck them in another 20,000 per
car! So they nixed that idea. Lot's of problems at the mine last year
and production was way down, so that means revenue is way down
and there wasn't enough money for newer cars. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the broken door video my friend.
Do you have the doors custom made for you? Or are they available from the original car manufacture still?
We get them from Trinity the original manufacturer Bend. Very much appreciate your taking the time to check out the video on the broken hopper car door my friend.
Almost looks like they were installing rivet nuts on the new door.
They very well could have been, I neglected to ask the mechanic
what they were doing, my fault, sorry bout that Keith. Thank you very much for for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Hi Dave, what is the unlaiden weight of those cars?
Our aluminum hopper cars weigh right around 51,000 pounds,
they each vary a small bit but they are all within that 51,000 range Graemefarmer. We load 115 tons in each car which gets us right
at the 286,000 pound limit for car and lading. Thanks so much
for stopping by today and checking out the video my friend.
Dave... would you choose trinity...as a supplier for new hopper cars,?
Absolutely Dave, they hold up much better than the cars we have
made by Freight Car America, at least here from what I've seen they
do. Thank you very much for taking the time to check out the broken hopper car door show my friend.
@@ccrx6700 I hope the management listens to your opinion....thanks dave!
Dave, I take it these doors are air operated? Or are they hydraulic?
So high curves stress the body when it is loaded along with the doors leading to breakages!! 😀
That is correct ferstuck air operated. High degree curves do put
stress on the car body and also on the suspension system on
the truck sets. Car bodies are built with about a 1 inch flex in
them, but the higher the degree curve the more flex that car body
wants to have as it goes down track. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and check out the broken door video my friend.
Thanks Dave! always interesting.
Dave can the old doors be rebuilt or is it not worth the labor to repair it.
They never have rebuilt any doors here Russell. They just put new ones on when need be. Not sure why they never have taken a door to
a fab shop and tried? Thank you very much for taking the time to
check out the broken hopper car door show my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Great job👍
Do newer coal hoppers have any features to mitigate against spillage? Seems like a waste, plus it keeps you busy scraping all that mud out and replacing ties and ballast.
In Brownsville Pa. there is about a quarter mile stretch of track that
runs down the middle of the street. NS and CSX ran over 23 million
tons of coal down that street in 2023 from Baily Mine. About
half of those cars are bottom discharge hopper cars like we have
here. There is absolutely zero coal spillage from those cars on
that street. NS has professional car men who understand how
to repair and maintain cars. We have coal mine mechanics who
try their best but are not full time car repairmen. Thanks for writing
in and for watching the video my friend.
@@ccrx6700 23 million, you say? That's difficult for me to even imagine.
By the way, Ligonier Ministries is based in suburban Orlando, but it won't surprise you when I tell you where the organisation was originally founded. Sproul was the director of adult education at a large Presbyterian church in Cincinnati when Dora Hillman, widow of Pittsburgh coal baron John Hartwell Hillman Jr, approached him to set up a theologically conservative Reformed educational and apologetics training centre back in his native SW PA. She gave him, or rather, the ministry, a large swathe of land in Westmorland County, and bankrolled the entire project. After Mrs. Hillman died, Sproul moved Ligonier's operations to somewhere altogether less cold, but he retained the name Ligonier.
Sproul died in 2017, but Ligonier persists. You can find his presentations here on UA-cam and I recommend them to you most enthusiastically. He never lost his SW PA/Yinzer twang.
That is a heavy door. How much does it weigh?
I'm not really sure Jeff, but it is aluminum so it's not nearly as
heavy as a steel door would be. Don't think I could pick it up tho.
Thanks for taking the time to check out the broken door show my friend.
What would a New car cost? 5 degrees here in Holland Michigan 24 inches of snow 1/16/24
In 2007 we bought 10 brand new hopper cars Wayne. At that time
the cost of the car plus getting them here was $90,000. I have no
idea how much a new car would cost now. I'm sure tank cars are
even a whole lot more expensive. This arctic blast we are getting
is being unkind to a lot of folks around the country. 9 here this
morning. Thank you very much for taking the time to check out the broken hopper car door show my friend.
