Starting to really believe that last statement , found the first antler this year off the same buck as my first antler last year , evidently he's an early shedder . Unfortunately it's been unseasonably warm and he was at least a week behind as must be the rest , I hope spring green up doesn't come too soon .

It has been unusually mild here (west central Illinois) for us as well. We have been finding sheds here and there, but it seems to be less consistent than previous years. But, its always fun to get out and look!

So, do all deer shed their antlers every year? Can’t seem to find a solid answer anywhere

Yes, all whitetail deer shed their antlers every year. Animals like rams and antelope (pronghorn) do not shed at all, and those are classified as horns - they continuously grow on the animals head throughout its life. Whereas antlers are regrown (typically bigger from year to year) annually.

@@Whitetail_Properties what's the purpose of shedding them? Surly it leaves the deer unprotected for most of the year?

@@tiedyesuit3097 a whitetails antler growing cycle is based on testosterone levels in their body. When there testosterone levels start increasing in the spring and summer they start growing antlers. They harden and are ready for peak testosterone during breading season in the fall. When levels start to fall and the breading cycle ends they shed them because there is no longer a need to use them to protect themselves from other bucks. And then the cycle starts over.

@@Whitetail_Properties Very interesting. So basically its used for mating and protecting itself during mating season. I thought they lost them to conserve space or energy during the winter. Thanks!

@@TheCr0wned Correct, the entire cycle essentially is for protecting themselves and asserting dominance among other bucks in the heard to breed does. Glad you learned something! That's what we like to hear!
