  • Many sidemount divers prefer to use aluminum tanks over steel tanks. Reasons for this include easier handling and the world wide availablity of alumnimum tanks.
A difficulty with aluminum tanks for sidemount diving is the fact that the tank bouyancy shifts from negative to positive over the course of the dive. This results in the bottom of the tank coming out of trim and increasing swimming effort.
Severa methods have been developed to address this issue. These include sliding drings and a forward and a rearward set of drings on each side for the bottom tank boltsnap.
This video describes a different type of mounting system which utilizes magnets instead of boltsnaps for the bottom of the tank. The advantage of this system is that once the tank is attached, no further handling is required over the course of the dive. The bottom half of the tank is fixed in position regardless of how much gas is in the tank and whether or not it is negative or positive.
For the upper securing method, a ring bungee system is currently being utilized. This is also so that once the system is secured, it does not have to be adjusted. This is an advantage over some systems which may have to be clipped, unclipped, and then bungeed when diving off of a boat or dock. A magnetic system for the upper securing method is currently under examination.

Is there anything over the magnets to keep fro rusting?
Usually I epoxy them in so water doesn't lift the chrome that tends to be coated on them...

Do these magnets influence your compass?

I'd be curious to see where you got the hardware from. I think I might be able to DIY something similar, but I'd probably have to do some hunting around.

did you have to modify the blocks for the magnets or were they originally for something like a tool belt?

Hello Dick. The blocks were actually cut with a table saw and drill from a high density plastic called starboard. I am not familiar with magnetic tool belts. So it is possible that you could find an accessory that would perform the same function. However, a critical feature of the blocks is that there is a slight recess so that the magnet / plate are consistently positioned. That also only allows the magnet to be released if it is pulled directly out from the block. In an earlier prototype, I discovered that a sideways motion could cause the magnet to disengage if the magnet / plate were flush to the block’s surface.

@DiveZoneScuba is that something you did in your garage or is it something we can buy to try?

Actually, I made it in a spare bedroom. The garage is way too hot. If you are asking if it is a prototype, the answer is yes. It is relatively easy to make yourself. All you need is a couple of magnets and magnetic plates, 4 bolts, and some high density polymer. Lately, I have been getting away from using high density polymer and using kydex instead, as it is substantially easier to machine. If there seems to be any substantial interest in this, I will make a video on constructing a set. I am still designing the upper magnetic mount.

@@divezonescuba The video tutorial would be great, also it would be nice to try it... not having to use the sliding D rings and ride them just like steel tanks would be nice.

Does it effect the compass ?

Possibly. I haven’t done any formal tests. The dives in Cozumel were all guided.
