What about the guy who literally put a bomb in his underwear before he got on a plane? Will the same machine that checks your WHOLE body also check your feet? Yeah, I thought so.
Yep one dude once, and now everyone has to take their shoes off if they want to board a plane. 320+ school shootings in the US in 2024, no one has to have background checks or psych evaluations to own military grade weapons.
The normal MMwave scanner at the airport would actually check the underwear, it just can't get the bottom of your foot (which this would). But really it's still security theater. It would prevent someone who absolutely did not research and decided to walk into an airport with a gun. But not someone who did some research on the weaknesses of these devices.

I live in Japan. We never take our shoes off going through security unless they're thick, like boots. Hopefully technology like this will totally eliminate shoe-removal.
Feet need to never be exposed to the public. They are disgusting and should never be seen. This silliness is why I don't travel anymore and have a new career that doesn't require flying anywhere. I miss the money but this is not worth flying for.

I assume this is prototype tech? It's obviously relatively pointless to put it in a module like that, if it has a one second scan time. You can easily have people walk down a narrow corridor and get auto scanned in a way where the only thing that makes it obvious to most people is a sign telling people their shoes are being scanned. There appears (so far) to be no reason for people to stand on a box like that unless they aren't planning on scanning everyone.
BS TSA doesn't look at the images!!!! Every airport I've been through there's a big screen right in front of the agent that's right after the machine you lift your arms up in ! Looking at feet is nothing but he said they never review anything?? What a Liar!!!
It doesn't show actual images of your body, it shows a general picture with a red dot of where the machine saw something unusual. Look harder next time or educate yourself before you speak.
That isn’t a fair comparison because the plane crash category is the main category in which terrorist attack in a plane would be a subcategory. Of (if there’s a terrorist attack, likely that would be a plane crash). Also you’re actually doing what many people mistakes of, especially in the field of cybersecurity. Lower terrorist attacked should be applauded as the result of the added security, not instead used as a tool to say the added security is too much
if you have a removable jacket and so on, you have to take it off too for regular clothes, you just have to empty them from any objects, while taking off your shoes does that automatically the regular CT scanner they use doesn't really see the feet that well, it scans the body mainly, so that's why the shoes have to get taken off as of now, it's a "blindspot" and the clothes aren't (unless there are multiple layers)
if you can try to hide a plastic knife in your shoe, why not put it in your sock so you can walk it through..does the frame image everything to the floor?
If my local airport ever uses this I'm going to use silver paint with a F on one and a U on the bottom of the other shoe. They can't stop it. It's freedom of speech!

It's definitely a bad idea to trust 100% AI regardless of how well you train it, but I think in this case, if it flags you erroneously, they will just make you take your shoes off to have a better look.
Most people don't know this, but you can tell them you want to opt out of the scans altogether, and they then just do a pat down. I rarely go through the scans anymore. That radiation isn't good for you. You're also allowed to bring a bottle of water if you tell them it's for medicine. They aren't allowed to deny you that right due to hippa lol.
another trick with water/liquids i found, if you freeze it and just drink whatever melted, you can get past just fine, in fact my drink melted halfway and the agent almost let me through but I just let him throw it away because I didn't need it anyway
How long until they don't need to humiliate passengers by making them remove their belts and hold their trousers up? (Yeah, not easy when your hands are arched above your head in the body scanner.)
The TSA is a waste of money and entirely theater. Not only did they fail over 80% tests done BY THE GOVERNMENT with inside knowledge, but the sheer amount of money currently spent on the TSA could actually prevent more possible terrorist attacks, while also making planes generally safer spaces, and costing LESS, by instead paying for air marshals to be stationed on planes instead of any screening equipment whatsoever, and it would have a higher effectiveness rate.

They still required shoe removal in Phoenix and Philadelphia but when I arrived in Canada CATSA (the TSA equivalent) did not have such a requirement.
