The credit card companies kept raising his limit and lowering his interest rate to try and get him to run up debt. He never did, and they HATE that. They call people who pay off their bill in their entirety each month deadbeats. Yeah, the people paying the minimum are upstanding and the ones with no debt are deadbeats in the world of credit cards.
@@victoriajohnson-parratt6975 What does Bernie have to lose? It may not get any bills passed, but it may throw maga/trump off their game and further drive another wedge into the rift caused by H1B controversy.
Could you charge less on your credit cards where you could pay the balance off every month before the grace period ends and not have to worry about what the interest rate was? It's the repitition of that behavior that is keeping people chronically screwed. The credit card companies count on this for their bottom lines. The interest rate just determines how fast it happens.
The banks are full of it. My credit has always been good, but I've never seen a credit card with less than 18% interest rates. Now, I just milk the cards for their points and pay them off every month.
People shouldn't count Bernie out. He's really good at this stuff. It's how he operates, and often succeeds. You just don't hear about it because he doesn't feel the need to take credit for everything he does.
It’s so frustrating when liberals don’t understand what Bernie is doing. When Trump, Musk, etc. say they’re going to do something good, you lock them into it by saying it’s a good idea. Knowing that the Republicans probably won’t do the good thing, you can effectively call them liars in campaign ads.
Everyone in the entire damm world knows he’s a liar. Or has been told he’s a liar, and refused to believe it. Why would his supporters believe hostile campaign adds, when they haven’t believed any credible source of that accusations before?

The Democrats NEED to yell about this all day, every day, everywhere. And not just credit card interest rates, but also grocery prices and other promises he made that benefit Americans.
Trump already said lowering grocery prices will be hard. Don’t forget no tax on tips or overtime. Trump would say anything to get elected. Now that the campaign is over, Trump’s next move “follow the money”.
My male relatives were saying "the economy" in the same breath as espousing misogyny, transphobia, and racism. It was never about the grocery bill, it was about punching down.
yeah, sure - low income households are too much of a risk to give credit if the interest is NOT so high that the interest itself puts them in danger of default.
We have had legalized loan sharking since the 80s . No one gives a shit that you are hungry or broke unless they are in a great deal of fear. Credit should not ever be necessary to meet basic needs. I love you folks but no soft words will move this needle.
Also credit rating doesn't mean sh**t. I have a nearly perfect score (850 out of 900), sitting at about 6% debt to income ratio, and was still told the best interest rate they would give on a credit card is 19.9%. I remember when 25% interest was considered loan sharking and was illegal. Now all credit cards are 19.9 to 30%.
A reminder for everyone at exactly how big a billion dollars is... one million seconds is around 11 days. One billion seconds is 31+ years. President Musk has enough money to spend one dollar per second for over 10,000 years.
Another way to put this into perspective. Come this July 4th the country will be 249 years old. That's only about 7,983,338,400 seconds (that doesn't include leap years). Yeah, less than 8 billion seconds. Actually quantifying 1 billion of anything is pretty astounding.
According to the Federal Reserve, the poorest 50% of households control 2.6% of the wealth, the next 40% control 30.8% of the wealth, the next 9% control 36.1% of the wealth, the next 0.9% control 16.6% of the wealth and the richest 0.1% control 13.9% of all the wealth in the USA. It may not be accurate to assume that the poorest 50% of households contain 50% of the population, but I'm going to do so. That means there are 166 million people in the US who, between them, control only 2.6% of the wealth in the US. Musk could give those people $2,500 each *and still have almost as many dollars as there are humans on Earth!*
Low income people never were able to get credit cards. I had to get my first one by having it secured by cash. Saying to not lower the rates because it might hurt the bottom third is kinda like saying we can't raise minimum wage because the companies will go bankrupt. These are excuses to excuse the companies.
Bernie does not support Trump; he's going to hold trump accountable for the words that he has said. And what a shock when Bernie becomes disappointed. Trump is not going to help anyone but himself and those that help him.

Good for Bernie! Keep calling Trump out! Holding him to his own promises is genius! Force him to put up or shut up and expose him as the liar he is to his brainwashed followers! 😂
Trying to "Hold Trump to his promise" is a fool's errand. Trump has no honor or sense of loyalty or duty to anything but himself. So why would anyone believe that Trump would feel an internal need to keep a promise to strangers when he can't even keep a promise to be faithful to any of his wives?
Im old enough to remember when the max interest on credit cards was 18 or 21%. And that was also when mortgage rates were around 12 - 14%. Deregulation caused this.
Let’s talk about healthcare… Health insurance was not always "FOR PROFIT." That started during REAGAN’S administration, not surprisingly, when BLUE CROSS went from "NOT FOR PROFIT" to "FOR PROFIT." That’s when insurance went from a means to process medical claims to a system to WITHHOLD CARE AND LET PEOPLE DIE FOR PROFITS.
would’ve been a lot better if reagan and trump had stuck to TV. i believe that’s when the christian nationalists came to power too, was when reagan was in. boy, haven’t these republicans been just great for we Americans? sickening
I actually doubt that banks would completely refuse to issue credit to those with lower credit ratings. They would probably issue smaller amounts, but they always need more debtors; their entire business model depends on the profits made from interest on loans. But working-class people are probably better off not getting loans at all, than having debt at such exorbitant interest rates that they can never pay off.
Well, that cap on interest rates would cut down significantly on the amount of credit available to many Americans. So I guess fewer people will go into debt.
Higher interest rates make it more likely for lower income people to default. It's illogical to charge them higher rates and it absolutely is usury as Bernie says. It's just another way to ensure the poor stay poor.
@angelikalindenau943 - Exactly. The credit companies don't actually lose money because lower income people pay as much or more in interest rates than they use on credit and the high rates keep them making those payments for years. The milk cows for the credit racket.
Basically. The theory is that while higher rates increase the risk of default, they bring in more revenue from those who don't default to make up for it. Mandating lower rates would only reduce the risk of default by a small amount, while decreasing revenue much more, making the loans unprofitable. Or so the theory goes. In an ideal economic model. Without knowing the profit margins and how these companies are gauging the risk, it's hard to know for sure.
@jeffmacdonald9863 - They likely do rationalize their greed by alleging defaults wouldn't decrease much. More likely it would just cut into the profits they rake in from shafting the non-wealthy.
Interest rates at 18% and more are like tenant farmer/sharecropper treatment. The borrower's interest expense is high enough to ensure he/she never gets far enough ahead to get out of debt or accumulate any savings or emergency fund. Until around 1980, credit card interest rates were capped at 12%, and until Reagan's tax law changes, interest in credit cards, auto loans, and similar debt instruments was deductible on Schedule A on Fed tax returns.
If they could adjust something like care credit, that would be great. Knock that down really far and make it much easier for people who need to use that for vet bills and medical bills
As a conservative Christian (not christian conservative or Chripto-fascist) I don't believe in charging interest or at least not excessive amounts of interest. Low income people could be charged the same interest as those who have more money if you take into account that they take longer to pay off these loans and are still more profitable than wealthy borrowers. Just to illustrate get a financial calculator and play around with loans and taking longer at the same interest rate and add up the money paid. Longer loans cost more anyway so the interest rates should be fixed even on lower income borrowers. Of course in a perfect world there would be no interest at all but we don't live in that world.
@Nancyr-x8o your father was smart. The point I am trying to make is that you don't have to charge more interest if you extend the time it takes to pay the money back. By extending the time, the payments go down, too. So it's actually a bit helpful, too. This also makes the lender more money too because the total paid is more. So maybe standardization of interest with more flexible amounts of time to pay back loans?

I disagree with the experts on this one, the surcharge the banks charge merchants already covers the current level of defaults and with lower interest rates the number of defaults would fall. The thing extrapolating from the first three quarters comes out to the credit card companies writing off around $62 billion in defaults this year, but that is on almost $6 trillion in transactions and the companies charge an average of 3% of all transactions from the merchant meaning even without interest they brought in around $180 billion. If the interest rates were lower sure the banks would make a slightly less obscene profit but they are not actually going to loose money and they already deny most of the people they think are going to actually default. What you might see is a drop in the number of pre approved cards showing up in the mail and caps that actually reflect peoples ability to pay it off, both of which would also lead to a dramatic drop in the number of defaults.
pretty sure that he likes spending other people’s $ and he built up his own, (or covered his losses) by declaring bankruptcy 7 times. i doubt he Ever used a credit card, lol
I am going to email Bernie and then every single one of the people in Congress in the state of Florida (where I live) that we the citizens in the state will be watching to see how he/she votes on this legislation. It is a no brainer that people want it passed. Oh and disclaimer--I was in collectons at a Big Bank. I know the struggles that people face.
Those "experts" are wrong. Lower interest rates won't make it harder to get credit cards for low credit score individuals. We already can't get credit cards because of our low credit score. What makes matters worse is the fact that it harms our credit score if we apply for a card and get denied on the grounds that we don't have good enough credit (our credit score is low). This makes it even more impossible to be approved for any kind of credit. The argument against capping interest rates on credit cards is based on a false foundation.

Payday loans are the worst.

A reminder for everyone at exactly how big a billion dollars is... one million seconds is around 11 days. One billion seconds is 31+ years. President Musk has enough money to spend one dollar per second for over 10,000 years.
🤯🤔🕛
That's the problem. He could single handedly pay off national debt and house and feed all his Americans for that time and not have his life affected.
Another way to put this into perspective. Come this July 4th the country will be 249 years old. That's only about 7,983,338,400 seconds (that doesn't include leap years). Yeah, less than 8 billion seconds. Actually quantifying 1 billion of anything is pretty astounding.
Thanks to US subsidies.
The point is not to actually get Trump to do what he says, it is to attempt to open people’s eyes to the fact that he will never do what he says.

Bernie's awesome
Well, that cap on interest rates would cut down significantly on the amount of credit available to many Americans. So I guess fewer people will go into debt.
Yay Belle!!!
Higher interest rates make it more likely for lower income people to default. It's illogical to charge them higher rates and it absolutely is usury as Bernie says. It's just another way to ensure the poor stay poor.
The vultures don't care which way they make a killing.
@angelikalindenau943 - Exactly. The credit companies don't actually lose money because lower income people pay as much or more in interest rates than they use on credit and the high rates keep them making those payments for years. The milk cows for the credit racket.
@angelikalindenau943
Literally 😔
Nice!
Thanks Belle. It'll be interesting to see this one play out.
Hey Ms. Belle and internet folks.
👋🏻🥶
Good afternoon Mark! I hope you're doing well today!
Well we will have to see what happens
Interest rates at 18% and more are like tenant farmer/sharecropper treatment. The borrower's interest expense is high enough to ensure he/she never gets far enough ahead to get out of debt or accumulate any savings or emergency fund. Until around 1980, credit card interest rates were capped at 12%, and until Reagan's tax law changes, interest in credit cards, auto loans, and similar debt instruments was deductible on Schedule A on Fed tax returns.
This is another reason that Trump has no business being re-elected...could there be tariffs on credit-cards too ❓
@@donaldmrambojr5695 try not to give him ideas 🤣
no, but credit cards charge such high interest that =21% they’re probably the equivalent of tariffs, =25%

If they could adjust something like care credit, that would be great. Knock that down really far and make it much easier for people who need to use that for vet bills and medical bills
Thank the update on caping the cards
As a conservative Christian (not christian conservative or Chripto-fascist) I don't believe in charging interest or at least not excessive amounts of interest. Low income people could be charged the same interest as those who have more money if you take into account that they take longer to pay off these loans and are still more profitable than wealthy borrowers. Just to illustrate get a financial calculator and play around with loans and taking longer at the same interest rate and add up the money paid. Longer loans cost more anyway so the interest rates should be fixed even on lower income borrowers. Of course in a perfect world there would be no interest at all but we don't live in that world.
my father was brilliant at math and he always paid credit card bills off b4 they were due. to avoid the interest

That kind of cap is actually a good idea. Now, let's see if they actually do it...
Thank you Belle and Team.
Sounds like Trump put all his purchases on his Capital One card.
pretty sure that he likes spending other people’s $ and he built up his own, (or covered his losses) by declaring bankruptcy 7 times. i doubt he Ever used a credit card, lol
Here in Switzerland, we have a maximum of 14%. This value is calculated and depends on the common interest rates.
His low information voters won't remember him ever saying that or they'll believe the next promise like good little sheep.
Go Bernie, go Bernie, go Bernie, go!
I saw the title and thought oh I gotta see this 😂
Hello fellow ranch hands!
The argument against capping interest rates on credit cards is based on a false foundation.
and the credit cards we do get have astronomical interest rates and are small amounts too. i haven’t had any for 15 years and i don’t miss them a bit
