As a biological woman who loved the first Joker movie, I've never known any incels going crazy over this movie. Just normal fans who want to be entertained and sadly, like me were given a terrible "sequel" I'd like to pretend never existed.
The only way a sequel could have worked was if it was set entirely in Arkham and it’s left open to the audience if what happened before was real or part of his imagination. I personally would have gone with a more horror style with dark comedy, showcasing Arthur’s further descent into madness and even playing with the idea that Harley maybe a hallucination.
I think a movie about Joker's escape from Arkham, instigating anarchy to leverage the cracks in the institution, establishment and court systems could have been an interesting courtroom drama
I actually think the overall idea was good I would be fine if he was not the real joker but this movie should have started out with him being the Joker he was at the end of part 1 To watch him start to experience doubt throughout and then in a moment become Arthur again would have been great And it even would have made the Heath Ledger Joker even MORE interesting To think that monster was born out of a good guy that just snapped, got caught up in it all and then refound his conscience That is good disturbing shit Oh...and take out the ass grape
There's lot of possible ways it could have been interesting. It could have been a long, twisting of a vulnerable mind in Harley, filmed entirely in an asylum and seeing HER reality start to slip into the same delusions Fleck had. It could have started literally where the first ended, with Fleck on a street being hustled away from the police, and finding himself in charge of a gang of anarchists and figuring out what it means to have the power he does. It could even have been a series of Kafkaesque court cases which - like the first movie - underscored that the legal system is as insane as the social system so Joker's insanity is adaptive instead of maladaptive (perhaps reminiscent, too, of Natural Born Killers where being a maniac is the exact thing the system can't deal with). Instead Phillips wanted to completely reverse the arc of the first.
Joker 2 is the perfect example of why equity doesnt work. The equity being every director being given complete freedom to do whatever the hell they want with a franchise. Some elite directors have earned that right through consistent high level showings. Giving that freedom to all directors gives you garbage like Joker 2.
That’s what i’ve been sayin about James Gunn. Kevin Fiege had a lot say over Marvel and Guardians got a lot help by the popularity of prime Marvel. Peacemaker and suicide squad are nowhere the success of his marvel stuff. I think it’s a huge mistake letting him run this much
@@Dr.DisrespectFan918 Agreed, I think Gunn is a competent director on specific movie types. He good at “subversive” characters who are moral grey. Which guardians of the galaxy and suicide squad work well. They are fun movies, but giving him full reins on DC movies really seems like a horrible idea. Because one from his interview doesn’t give me confidence that he understands more pure superheroes type character especially Superman. Superman is a great person with strong morals and because he doesn’t bend is morals it cause him so much hardship and I can’t believe Gunn would ever understand that. Making a director who only truly understands moral grey characters and nothing else is not a good person to run movie universe where most characters are genuine good people vs absolutely horrible people.

@@apollo597 Didn’t Joker 2 commence filming in 2022 to 2023? I would assume a lot of movies or series had a similar timeframe. Other than narratives being pushed at te expense of a potentially good movie, it’s like the film industry is a rudderless mess and can’t or won’t recognise what the majority of their audience wants
Re the "Joaquin Phoenix had a dream" story- according to him (in Variety) this was just before filming on Joker 2019 wrapped. He wasn't ready to let go of the character, and he had a dream of himself on stage as Fleck, being directed by Todd Phillips while he told jokes and sang. So he called up Phillips and said he'd liked to try a musical sequel, which Phillips agreed to. Phillips considered doing it as a Broadway play, but there were various issues against it, such as Covid regs and Phoenix's schedule. So they ended up doing it as a proper movie sequel.
I think the audience could smell the pretentiousness a mile away from the name: 'Folie à deux'.. It's a 2 and a bit hour epilogue with singing breaks for no reason.. I see why people are calling it a slog..
Joker 1: a take on how society denigrates, mistreats, and rejects the mentally ill Joker 2: a film celebrating denigrating, mistreating, and rejecting the mentally ill
The problem with the, so called Superman movie, is they're treating it like it's not! a Superman movie. They're treating it like a justice league movie. Just make a good to great down to earth Superman movie. Here's the thing, Idc how good of an actor you are, nobody is going to replace Christopher Reeves as Superman. Don't go into it expecting he'll be better, bc you'll be sorely disappointed.
24:00 "How can people call a movie boring where a mentally ill man gets humiliated and beaten up?" - A great quote that made me laugh like Arthur Fleck.
I think everyone's missing an obvious clue as to what Phillips was doing here. Like the first film, Joker 2 is just another copy of a Scorsese DeNiro film, this time a massive flop from '77 called "New York, New York", which was a rom-com musical duet act that was a quasi-parody of MGM musicals with intentionally fake-looking sets for the dream-like musical numbers. Even the music is similar to Joker 2, being mostly garbage and critics complained the musical numbers were pointless and didn't tie into the story like a real musical would. Like Joker 2, it was expected to be a huge hit by the studio, and was at the time the largest budget Scorsese had ever had. The film was such a flop, Scorsese fell into drug addiction and the studio, United Artists, was only saved from the flop by the film Rocky, which they'd ironically expected to flop and had pooled the profits with New York, New York, similar to what happened with Star Wars. Clearly, Warner Bros made Todd Phillips make a sequel, despite him not wanting to, so he decided to base it on the least-known, biggest flop Scorsese film as a gfys gesture. We'll know for certain, if Phillips ever tries to develop this into a really, really awful Broadway play.
Most of us who watch these guys channels know what the two films were based on. I believe Chris Gore was talking about this a year or more ago. Others as well. But the idea that he did it to intentionally fail as a GFYS to the studio is garbage. First of all, he's not a big enough name to intentionally tank films. If the studios even suspected him of it he'd never work again, and his $20 million paycheck that us normal people would live well on for the rest of our lives won't last him half a decade in the circles he travels in. Secondly, we have all the interviews and tweets and everything where he said unequivocally that he hated the fan reaction to Joker and what things had resonated with them. He hated what fans had taken away from his runaway success Joker, and he set out to "fix" things. Make no mistake, this was a GFYS to the fans, not the studio. The studio, on the other hand, should have been smarter than this. (Ha ha, I know... Studio executives with a brain is an oxymoron these days.) They certainly should have known what the first film was based on (and that it had been a success), and they should have seen what the second film was based on (and that it had been an abject failure), and they should have told him "No. If you're going to base it on a Scorsese film, pick one that didn't flop."
@@bobnix3240 I hear you; and I was cognizant of the King of Comedy influence in the first film. But this one, which I had no interest in from day one, I hadn’t suspected another Scorsese… “homage.” Anyway, your points are well-taken. I haven’t seen the film so can’t really give an informed opinion.
@@bobnix3240 I didn't say it was a GFYS to the studio or that he was intentionally making the film to fail; I said that him picking "New York, New York" to homage was a GFYS gesture in general. He was targeting everyone involved, fans and studio alike. Picking a poorly received Scorsese flop for inspiration was a message in itself, his way of signaling how little he cared about this sequel. Much like giving it a pretentious title like Folie à Deux, actually. He's both being needlessly obscure by using a French phrase for a mental disorder, and vaguely accusing the audience of mass delusion over their reaction to the first film. The fact that Joker 2 has flopped horribly probably was not something he expected though. After all, the Hangover 2 was garbage but made $100 million+ over the previous film; he probably expected Joker 1 fans would all show up to see this film regardless of negative reviews. He (and the studio) likely failed to realize just how strongly word of mouth and UA-cam reviews have become since 2019, or how streaming and capshit fatigue have eroded Hollywood box offices.
In architecture we would call this a “spite house”. This was just a middle finger never intended to make bank or serve any real purpose. For a listed company to do spite houses is a breach of fiduciary duty.
WB better have Zack Snyder on deck when James Gunn’s Superman underwhelms…. The audience is so fractured that it would take a miracle to bring it back together
I wasn't a huge fan of the first Joker movie even. It was SOOO depressing. It picked up and got fun when he started doing wild crazy shit. I think the director struggles with Joker 2 because he can't grasp that enjoying the mad spectacle of the Joker doing subjectively evil things is entertaining but doesn't mean that's where your morals lie. Director is probably nursing a raging depression himself, so fun isn't allowed.
I love how we as a community are celebrating ‘The Joker Folie a shit’ demise. Especially after Todd Phillips and WB gave the middle finger to the fans.
I think the top billing stars, directors, and producers should get percentage of box office. Joaquin: "... i had a dream last night that I want to work into the movie." Director: "Shut. Up. Freak Show! I've got ranch payments to make!"
On the back of the Penguin, it wouldn't surprise me if they did a spin off TV show on Two-Face. You can have this gritty crime/court room drama, of a person who actually tries to fix Gotham's problems through bona fide means unlike Batman. Harvey Dent was a good man and seeing his descent into Two-Face is waiting for a TV show.
Nice you mentioned "Jonah Hex".....as woke as DC is now, it's hard to believe they once made a Confederate White male superhero. They did though, cool movie too.
I was just thinking of that movie the other day. I know nothing of the comics, which is probably why I enjoyed the movie, but it contained the things I like (Western and supernatural).
@@DragonoftheEastblu Oh I've never read any of the comics, I just know the character from the Josh Brolin movie. Which I have on dvd. Could watch it now if I wanted to.
A series based off of the Gotham Central series would be terrific if done right and would fit in with the narrative being set up by the Penguin series. A grounded crime series that deals largely with the GCPD and the non powered baddies but the shadow of the Bat still hangs over the city as do glimpses of the more dangerous freaks. In Batman comics and films we get a distorted view of how much supernatural and super powered crime is going on because we’re always following Batman around and he deals primarily with the heavy hitters. There’s still tons of other crime stories happening in Gotham that the regular police force have to deal with. Penguin, Riddler, Scarface, Hush even the Scarecrow would fit that narrative quite well.
Matt reeves is killing it with The Batman Universe I love Grunge bruce wayne mixed in with a sopranos tone. WB should give everything Matt needs for his franchise no matter what.
Pretty sure they'll mess up Batman 2 by having Poison Ivy be a misunderstood environmental protectionist that the incel white Batman bullies throughout the movie. Looks like they also didn't learn anything from the failure of Justice League. "Let's just throw in all these superheroes at once and not build them up at all!". Yeah, that'll work..
Something that would have made this movie interesting. Have it from Harley Quinn's (Lady GaGa) perspective entirety. You see the musical numbers gradually increase. You slowly see the poison of Joker's world coil around. The psychological manipulation from the victim's perspective would truely haunting. You could start it with a session. Were gets her to remove a spider or something as small. Then it ends with him getting her to kill someone with no remorse. That transition of Joker's manipulative nature would be fantastic.
The biggest problem with Joker 2 is that when they made the first one, it was pretty much part of the marketing that it was a one and done. That a sequel was not happening and not necessary. Todd Phillips was adamant. Then they expected us to all of a sudden believe that the sequel was must see. As if the audience was stupid enough to believe that Todd Phillips agreed to do this movie for anything other than a huge bag of money. Sorry, not me.
I would've loved a film talking about the horrors of our old psych institutions. Arthur getting locked in solitude, the wet blanket treatments. Keep him a bit regretful about his actions and slowly but surely erode away Arthur until all he has left is the joker. Have harley as a sympathetic character who falls in love with the joker as she feels for him. The end of the film could be him getting broken free by his supporters and the joker is truly born. Ah well, what could've been.
I confess I went to see the movie. Afterwards, I have been telling everyone how bad it is and to not waste your money. So bad, I almost left in the middle. But I kept hoping it would get better. Joaquin was great but couldn't save the movie. Terrible.
This is what happens when you have disdain for your audience.

I actually think the overall idea was good
I would be fine if he was not the real joker but this movie should have started out with him being the Joker he was at the end of part 1
To watch him start to experience doubt throughout and then in a moment become Arthur again would have been great
And it even would have made the Heath Ledger Joker even MORE interesting
To think that monster was born out of a good guy that just snapped, got caught up in it all and then refound his conscience
That is good disturbing shit
Oh...and take out the ass grape
Dr. Strange M.O.M. could've been a good horror film
@@YouilAushana It should have been one.

The Penguin is totally playing off Tony Soprano, the squints and the mannerisms are very close and completely works. Colin Farrell is knocking this role out of the park, home fkn run...

Good catch on New York, New York. That hadn’t occurred to me but it makes *perfect* sense.
But this one, which I had no interest in from day one, I hadn’t suspected another Scorsese… “homage.”
Anyway, your points are well-taken.
@@berserkasaurusrex4233 Fair enough! I'll take the hit. Cheers.

Joker 2 has a secret meaning to it that most of the casual watching fans missed. That meaning is that the real clown was you who went to see it.

I only hated Catwoman's one line in The Batman. That was just so awful.
If Hollywood has ANY sense of self preservation, Todd Philips is going straight to director jail.
