Just to give my perspective as someone who has lived in 4 different countries, living in the West has it's own challenges. It is not for the faint hearted but I tell you living in Naija currently is terribly becoming unbearable for the average person. I visited naija few months ago and my jaw fell. Was wondering how people are coping with the terrible inflation and poor remuneration if they even have jobs. In Canada/UK, you can claim benefits if you are unemployed ( and a citizen/PR holder) but you don't have that in Nigeria!.
Will leave this comment I made earlier here again:
UK is equally or even more expensive. Less than £50K is 20% annual tax and between £50-100K is 40%. I am paying 40% tax which is almost £2K ( £1,950) monthly ,so take home is barely £3K after working my head off! Really difficult getting any savings for families.
Regarding healthcare, UK is just slightly better cos right now NHS is terribly stressed and wait time at the emergency unit can be > 6 hours. Ambulance wait for life-threatening cases can be up to 4-6 hours ( have called ambulance for patients while on home visit) and people will be forced to drive their relatives down to A&E . At the emergency, cases are triaged and so if someone in coma is brought, less serious cases will wait for longer hours (can be up to 8 -10 hours on very bad days). In the GP surgery, I am trained to finish appointment within 10minutes. Referral for ultrasound /CT scan or even ECHO takes several months (at least ECHO referral takes 6-9months)!
To be frank, it is only in Nigeria that you can see a doctor or even specialist at a good private hospital immediately, get investigation or even surgeries done instantly if you have money or health insurance. US is also better than Canada but you must have correct health insurance while Canada health care is free. I left Canada for the UK to get UK training which is acceptable in Canada as getting residency can be a long thing in Canada. I lived in Edmonton for almost 3 years and enjoyed my stay there.
For your info, I am a Doc who is planning to come back to Canada after my training next year. Healthcare in the UK (NHS) is under massive stress (wait time for specialist appointment can be 1-2 years!) and staffs have had to endure poor pay!.
Doctors in the UK have been on almost monthly strikes (3-5 days each month) since Feb of this year over poor pay condition. Most people doing Masters in the UK are struggling to get befitting jobs after completing their programme and have had to take up care jobs (imagine after paying heavy tuition fees).
Crime is on the rise in the UK too, infact knife crimes with car jerking is on the increase.
If Naija is ok economically and security wise to an extent with no fear of kidnapping etc, wetin person dey find for all these suffer head countries!
In summary, Nowhere is paradise but some places are better and one needs to count the cost.

Thank you for your submission! I really love your comment. If I’m extremely wealthy, I’ll definitely stay in Nigeria and only vacation abroad. Canada is good for the quality of life and the opportunity it presents.
The problem with Nigeria is not just the inflation, as that is global, but the fact that people are still earning what they were earning 10 years ago. It’s sad to see that many people in Nigeria are making less than $100 in a month. And we expect there to be no crime😢

It may definitely be much harder compared to 2014. It’s sad to see that when we make videos like this, people think we’re trying to kill their hopes of coming to live in Canada 😅

@@erinletobi Absolutely people are not killing people hopes of living in Canada but is good that people on this platform are telling people the reality of Canada. I wish 10 years ago before I moved there people on this platform discuss the harsh reality of living in Canada like now, in just to get an idea of what it is like there. It's not like you're telling people not to visit the country just what to expect there.
But yeah that's my point it was a hard living in Canada 2013/2014 that's why I left can only just imagine how tougher it is now especially with the cost of living crisis globally

Hi, Tobi. I am sure you mean well but there are still a lot of misconceptions about taxes in Canada that are not properly explained, especially the "marginal tax" and I keep hearing this in MANY videos about Canada. I apologize in advance for the font I use below but my accounting professor at USA University was very particular about the meaning of words in accounting 😅. In Canada, like in the USA, INCOME (money you get paid for doing a job) is taxed using a "bracket system", the tax brackets are different in each country. In Canada, for the YEAR 2023 (FEDERAL TAX RATES!!!), if you earn $100,000 a year, the first $53,359 is taxed at 15%, THEN anything over $53,359 up to $106,717 is taxed at 20.50%, over $106,717 up to $165,430 is taxed at 26%, over $165,430 up to $235,675 is taxed at 29.32% and finally over $235,675 is taxed at 33%.
Whatever amount of money you make, the HIGHEST TAX BRACKET you fall into (15%, 20.5%, 26%, 29.32%, or 33%) is what is referred to as your MARGINAL TAX RATE. Having a marginal tax rate of 33% (the highest tax bracket for INCOME in Canada for 2023) does NOT mean that every dollar you make is going to be taxed at that rate, ONLY the dollars that are over $235,675 (if you are lucky/blessed enough to make that much money in a year 😅). The marginal tax rate for “other income” such as capital gains (trading stocks/bonds), dividends, etc. are different from the tax brackets applied to income for your job(s). From the same website you used in your video: www.taxtips.ca/taxrates/canada.htm
Anyone, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, You will not hurt my feelings as I am still learning too. Thanks.

    • @erinletobi
      @erinletobi  11 місяців тому

Thanks for this. Yes everything you explained is correct, I am in a different bracket compared to someone earning $1m per year. What I tried to emphasize is the fact that the taxes are a lot and there are so many resources to calculate how much tax you’ll pay depending on how much you earn and what province in Canada you live in.

An appointment with a specialist is literaly a day or week depending on how busy they are and if ypu are scheduled for an op its doesn't take months. We had an operation for me n my two sons. It took a week from seeing the specialist to the operarion. I guess all that glitters is not gold

Nowhere is paradise but having lived in Nigeria, UK, Caribbean island and Canada, the current Naija situation is really disheartening. The Security situation and terrible inflation in Naija currently is enough reason to move (£1= #1,550 as at today)
My advice is MOVE if you have the means to move and should be a personal decision! It's not everyone that will be satisfied or fulfilled moving abroad, So look inwards, reflect and work on your long-term goals.

That said, any body living a "middle class" life in Nigeria should definitely relocate. Bad as e bad, they will have a better life in Canada or elsewhere. The people who should think twice are those who earn in millions monthly and plan to only move their family while they still work in Nigeria because of their high income. Those people need to know that they will pay taxes on their worldwide income, therefore they need to consider if the taxes, the cold, health care system in Canada vs the money they can save/invest and the readily available private health care for them in Nigeria is worth the move.

I only left at 51 and wished I'd hv started 3 decades earlier!!! Hv been on the road for 9 yrs, covered more than 30 countries mostly here in Europe where I get to work & enjoying literary every corner of the beautiful planet instead of paying up to my nose for nothing in Vancouver, tho I used to love my city to the moon... not to mention months of wet & miserable winter & how cold & edgy people are these days and don't even talk to me about the evil woke culture where our PM along with all the elites are secretly trying to imprison all Canadians where these blood suckers will drain u high & dry whereby they live in cloud nine themselves! Since moving away I've decided to live only a few months in each country I visit but in spite of moving around once every few months yet I managed to save 2-3x more in comparison to when I was working just to pay all the bills where I could never earn enough to own a home in Vancouver, ever! I still hope for massive turn around for the country I love yet I'll encourage anyone to get out of your comfort zone and u shall be surprised by all the experiences money can never buy u! Don't be afraid as life has much more to offer outside of our comfort zone really!!
