  • Elmer The Elephant by Steve Pickett based on Elmer by David McKee, directed by Wendy Cook
Elmer is a multicoloured, patchwork elephant. David McKee’s stories explore the theme and issues relating to the concept of diversity, as Elmer discovers that when he tries to change his appearance in order to 'blend in' with the other elephants, they no longer recognise him, or accept him as one of their own. Elmer first appeared in 1968 and since then the numerous books featuring the larger than life, practical joking elephant have sold over five million copies world wide.
Musicians from the Hallé are seen here performing Steve Pickett’s intricate score for 9 players which requires them to not only play but also to act, dance and sing. Across our recent run of 12 Elmer the Elephant performances as part of the Family Arts Festival, the players performed to nearly 2,000 very young children and their parents.
