  • Rejoice in God's gift of hymnody, recorded at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan during the 2015 Higher Things youth conferences.
    1 For all the saints who from their labors rest,
    Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,
    Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
    Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
    Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    3 Oh, may Thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
    Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old
    And win with them the victor’s crown of gold!
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    4 Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine!
    We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
    Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    5 And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long,
    Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
    And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    6 The golden evening brightens in the west;
    Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest;
    Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    7 But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day:
    The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
    The King of Glory passes on His way.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    D 8 From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
    Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
    Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
    Alleluia! Alleluia!

      We always sing this hymn on All Saints Sunday, and I agree that it would be very appropriate for a funeral. It proclaims the Protestant understanding that all who put their faith in trust in Christ are made saints by His blood and righteousness, not by their own good works.

      The nasty reply would be we ARE the gnesio catolico (true catholic), not Roman Catholic. However, such an answer ignores those within the Church of Rome who do indeed belong to Christ who alone truly knows who are His sheep. For Lutherans, the "true presence" of Christ's body and blood do not ignore the reality of bread and wine. How this dual reality (bread and body, wine and blood) can exist, we do not know but it nevertheless is because Christ so stated. That suffices for us. As far as singing, it is merely a matter of having about six hymns at every divine service and examples in adult congregants who sing as Lutherans have sung for the past five centuries. After all, repetitio est mater studiorum.

      The wall of candles and crucifix became popular in some RC parishes during the time of Pope Benedict in the early 2000s. Common liturgical principals among denominations would go with the look of this church. To me, the true give away of the architecture's deep connection to Lutheran theology is the baptismal font, front and center.
