Terry you just saved my hide, thank you for the video! I wasted so much time trying to get that pulley off. Then saw your video, 2 minutes later I am done. You rock!
You just saved me an hour. Thanks brother! Rented a generic one from O'Reilly's and it did the trick. No torch needed. 3 jaw puller can kiss my behind from now on
Well I used your tip yesterday to pull the crank pulley off of my Silverado's 5.3 Vortec. The old bolt trimmed down coupled up with the right puller took the crank pulley off in a flash, easiest one I've ever done!..the hardest part of the job was the beginning part of cutting the flange off of the old hardened steel crank bolt. It took my cut off tool, Dewalt reciprocating saw with metal blade, vise and a hammer..along with girl arms and hands with a bit of unladylike under the breath salty mechanic language lol. Might have been easier for a man, but to use your words a "Jonah" of a pain for me lol Got her done tho ;-) Anyone out there who thinks this man doesn't know what he's talking about, shaddap, listen and learn lol. Thank you SOOOO much for posting this video!! :-)
hahah much luv Kayla, bless your heart.. woman like you make the world a better place to live.. lol im glad it worked and should have any questions.. hit me up anytime and thanks again.
Terry, thank you for the videos. I have bought my first LS and began the tear down last week. You have been an easy to follow host and a great help in my new adventure.
@@Coverman66 ok I got the bolt removed finally but I cannot get the balancer off for the life of me. It is not bugging even a little and I cranked the puller a round a probably 6 plus times? I can't get my impact gun in there any other suggestions? Thank you for the help
The most recent addition to the technique I’ve seen around is using the LS7 crank bolt to start the pulley with its extra inch or so length so you don’t strip it.
Great video as always. So the threaded "bolt" that goes into the puller (what you actually tighten). Does it it just make contact with the end of the pulley bolt. Just wanting to make sure it doesn't damage the bolt/threads since I have to return the tool
I am fixing to change out my oil pump (yes, me..a girl lol ) on my 05 Chev Silverado 1500 ext. cab long bed with a 5.3 Vortec engine. Having watched your awesome video , I went to Oreilly's auto parts today and bought a brand new replacement crank pulley bolt so I can trim down the old one and try this method with my three jaw puller..I really appreciate you sharing and posting this, I am sure (hopefully) it'll work for me just as easy! girl got air tools! lol :-)
im glad you found my clips useful Kayla.. its seem more often i get emails and comments from do it yourself woman doing major car repairs, i take me hat off to you.. its a wonderful thing.. if you should have any questions feel free to reach out.. much appreciated
I definitely find your videos helpful, especially this one. I have to say this with as much respect as is humanly possible..I watched this video in amazement, it was just awesome. It was like a young Muhammad Ali was teaching me a new mechanical trick! lol..you look just like him and even act a little bit like him lol..he had such great humor and heart! :-) It's a true compliment, trust me. He was just an all around great man and I admired him immensely :-) Thank you for involving the ladies as well. It doesn't surprise me that you have a following of the DIY girls. I'm quite the renaissance girl myself..I'm as feminine as they come but not afraid to shoot a gun or get dirty and turn wrenches etc. as well. I may change my trucks oil then go in an hour later and fry chicken lol. Have a blessed day and keep on printing the words "CRANK PULLEY" on your vids when you say crank..cracked me up lol. Get yourself some tea and I'll chat with you another time! lol. Gotta go out and get busy on this engine ;-)
once again thanks you and if i had a dime every time someone said i look like Ali i would be a rich man lolol thanks you for your kind words and beautiful compliments. it great more and more woman are getting involved with the hobby. sorry for the delay in response.. always great hearing from you Kayla..
You're welcome :) well let's hope those dimes start rolling in then! lol. It's not so much a hobby for me these days as it is necessity. I had to learn a little something about cars and trucks because I can't cough up all of that money that shops want to repair my vehicles that I make a living with. I would much rather invest in tools and knowledge. I'm pretty mechanically inclined anyway so why not?..I can always back up and punt if I get in trouble or over my head. No worries, and always a pleasure Sir :)
I have a issue of a puppy not going all the way in. I installed a double roller timing chain. Put on the shims that go on the oil pump and file down clearance in the front cover. Do you have to shaved the harmonic next?
Thanks for the video man, i rented the Chrysler Mitsubishi puller from O'reillies and it worked like a charm. As far and cutting the flange off the big bolt - I just lopped off the flange sides with a Sawzall aith a Diablo blade and judicious use of cutting oil (just used ATF). Worked great.
thanks Eddie.. much appreciated.. i think the stock chrome mirrors look good on a stock classic looking chevelle.. i wanted to have a more sporty look.. while in the boneyard i was the mirrors on a 96 buick lesabre.. i trimmed them down at the base and there you have it.. thanks for the compliment Brotha Eddie
I used the same pulley puller but I slid a 1/4 deep socket in the bolt hole on the crank so the rod had something to push against, pulley and socket came right out.
Ok man, you convinced me. I ordered my Chrysler puller yesterday. I’m installing an 8 rib Innovators West pulley for an Olson Kustom Works drive. Wish me luck.
What would be an easier way to put the harmonic balancer on with an auto transmission, I didn't have the luxury of a manual to just put it in gear to lock up the engine and had to some how wedge a steel bar so the engine wouldn't turn.. and it was pretty sketchy
coverman66 but since it has a torque converter it should still spin right? even in park? I was thinking of doing an lsa swap but I really didn't want to mess with that balancer again lol
thats what kept me from doing the LSA for a while, but i took that balancer out in under 5 min.. it was awesome lolol.. it wont move if your just snugging the balancer on. once its on and your ready to torque it on.. i used the impact gun... just a couple of taps..
Dawn Terry! You flew like a butterfly and stung like a bee when you took the pulley out. Does the part that has to be trim is between the top and the thread right?
Love Your Videos, Im Going To Install a Fluidampr this weekend on my LS1 Camaro. I dont have a 250 ft. Ib. torque Wrench, so I'll be doing the jack handle method as well!!!
Hey man great video. Question for you, did your new puller not come with extensions so you wouldn't have to shaved bolt down in the crank shaft? Also is installing it back on just as easy as putting it back on and tourqing it to specs?
Terry! Are you planning on changing s/c pulley to get more boost? if so, you might want to think about pinning the balancer. I pinned mine when I did it for possible future upgrades. Anyway, if so, let me know. I have the jig and drill bit I'd loan you and a new TTY bolt since you already installed that one.
my brotha Feed, always looking out.. great minds think alike..i did pin out the crank and i will be dropping the video in a week.. lolol i went with a 2.55 pulley so i can get around 11 to 13lbs of boost.. again thanks for looking out brotha..
hahah.. quick story.. i was in the middle of filming a video and i have one of those clocks in the garage shop that shines the time anywhere you direct it.. i was signing off and the time somehow got moved from the wall to the ceiling in the middle of shooting. it became part of my closing. so thats where it comes from Showme.
You don't need a ls specific tool for anything on these engines. Ls engines came stock from the factory in the 2500 and 2500 HD pick ups. Maybe educate yourself before commenting like you know what your doing. 🤣

thats whats its all about.. reading this made my day..
Did you use the same bolt that you trimmed down for removal when you installed the new harmonica balancer or did you buy a new one?
i always get new bolts.. i will used the old bolt to help install
How do you get the only bolt out? Having some issues iv heard people saying that you need to jam the fly wheel before?
i use an impact gun.. low setting.. keep me posted on the build brotha Levi..

if done right you should be fine.. i remove balances this way
@@Coverman66 yeah I just had to use a washer and other things to make it work

What part number for the pulley remover? And did you need a longer bolt? If so whats part number for that too? Thanks in advance

ive never needed to do that, what are you using to driver the balancer in with?
Dont forget to give the Thumbs up on all my videos.. lolol got more cool videos coming..
Does the 3 rib pully mess with the crank balance?
been using them for years.. whats your plans brotha Frisco..
Worked great.
thanks for the tip.. i will remember that.
OEMTOOLS 25090 is actually cheaper and has more accessories. Thanks for the video Terry! Very helpful.
thanks for the tip SD.. much appreciated..
like all the stuff you have done to your chevlle brakes, body bushings ls engine. I want to do same to my 72. What kind of side mirrors you using ?
thanks Eddie.. much appreciated.. i think the stock chrome mirrors look good on a stock classic looking chevelle.. i wanted to have a more sporty look.. while in the boneyard i was the mirrors on a 96 buick lesabre.. i trimmed them down at the base and there you have it.. thanks for the compliment Brotha Eddie
I use a 3/4 or 19mm half inch sock with the center filled with a weld in the center so the bolt won't strip or brake.
i like that.. thanks for the tip..
I used the same pulley puller but I slid a 1/4 deep socket in the bolt hole on the crank so the rod had something to push against, pulley and socket came right out.
thats a great tool.. i might have to try it that way lol thanks for the tip
No problem! Best solution I could come up with since it was an auto zone rental tool and needed the wobbly pulley off lol
Ok man, you convinced me. I ordered my Chrysler puller yesterday. I’m installing an 8 rib Innovators West pulley for an Olson Kustom Works drive. Wish me luck.
a great tool to have around thanks Cliff..
I used a impact socket instead of the bolt worked awesome.
What would be an easier way to put the harmonic balancer on with an auto transmission, I didn't have the luxury of a manual to just put it in gear to lock up the engine and had to some how wedge a steel bar so the engine wouldn't turn.. and it was pretty sketchy
e-brakes applied and car in park..you should be good to go.. un-hooked the battery just for security..
coverman66 but since it has a torque converter it should still spin right? even in park? I was thinking of doing an lsa swap but I really didn't want to mess with that balancer again lol

much appreciated.. more on the way brotha..
works with ls3 c6 corvette ?
you know it brotha Shadow..
Did you use the 4" or 5 1/2 adapter rod on top of the balancer bolt?
whichever one works.. lool i think it was the 4inch.. thanks brotha Payton..
Now if you use a bolt that is M16x2x120mm long it will seat the crank pully back on.
yep.. a ls7 crank bolt will seat the crank pulley in nicely..
Dawn Terry! You flew like a butterfly and stung like a bee when you took the pulley out. Does the part that has to be trim is between the top and the thread right?
nope. just as easy as it was in the video.. use a trimmed old crank bold and your good to go brotha MM
I have the black steel crank bolt that comes with the washer.
