    I just want to say that Caitlin absolutely deserves her award and while she had a historic WNBA rookie year, she also had a HISTORIC collegiate year and broke a record (among several other records) that was over 50 yrs old. It's Time athlete of the year, not time athlete of six months. She's the all time leading scorer for men and women. No Olympian has had a year like hers and had this major impact on their own sport. The fact that her award is even being debated is silly.

      Yeah it’s going to take time. No need to force it. And I want to see more Clark fans show some respect to other WNBA players. Hating on Reese, Wilson, and even Carrington is so tired now. Those are 3 really good players that are passionate about their sport and just want to win. The funny thing about Reese especially is she would be fantastic playing with Caitlin. The combination of their talents would be lethal.
      Also, I’m so over the NaLyssa Smith hate from new fans. She was the 2nd overall pick in the draft and has so much potential. She was a star at Baylor. Smith hasn’t had a good coach for 2 years, I wouldn’t be upset if she stayed on the team, assuming Coach White can use her in a way that suits her abilities.

    My overall stance is what Chauny said. As usual WNBA is dropping the ball and cant tell a story to save their lives. The divisiveness from every angle needs to be checked by the league and its media partners. The players shouldn't always have to address everything.
    Cant wait for unrivaled.

      Exactly. And she deserves the award for breaking A 54-year old scoring record AND a bunch of records in the W as a 22 year old. Race had nothing to do with this one. SO sick of this stuff

    • @ericaalexander92
      @ericaalexander92 25 днів тому

      @MP-bk5sf Race does play a part which is why I referenced the media while everyone got a piece of the some form of the nonsense, she was protected largely by mainstream media and the other players got the heat and still do. So it does play a part unfortunately this is America but the league needs to check their mainstream media partners for all of their players not just her cause that in itself causes tension and can be misdirected at her and not at the league.

    And the WNBA does a horrible job highlighting its current players. As Caitlin Clark said during the season, there are many great players with great stories. But the WNBA & media seems more concerned with downplaying CC and pitting her against a few other players.
    Engelbert's obsession with rivalries is just ridiculous too. Rivalries don't work when you have one player that has a huge fanbase like CC does. Where exactly are all the new fans for their rival supposed to come from? The WNBA should be praising CC's accomplishments while highlighting a variety of other players also so CC's fans can find other players to like and follow in addition to CC.
    The All Star game would have been a perfect opportunity to highlight a variety of great players. As a new fan of the WNBA, I actually found a lot of great players to follow during the All Star weekend, but not thru any efforts of the WNBA or the media. I found random UA-cam videos from people who attended the events and spoke to various players or interviewed them during the weekend.

    • @ericMT
      @ericMT 26 днів тому +2

      Totally agree. At the very least they can do a 5 minute segment for every all star player and put those in during the game and events surrounding it. Give some background, show highlights and maybe a short interview.
      A lot of eyes are on the ASG and it’s a fantastic way to get people excited about other players. The general player marketing could be a lot better if they want to grow the league.

    • @georgia_amoorefan
      @georgia_amoorefan 26 днів тому

      Caitlin is more popular than Angel but they both have very large fanbases… that’s the only reason it’s marketed as a rivalry. Their games are the most watched/discussed. Also, the problem with them attempting to capitalize on increased exposure is that people shut it down. I’ve seen so many sports pages post about other players and the comments are filled with “we only care about Caitlin.” Majority of the new fans literally only care about 1 person, which makes it pretty pointless to spend a bunch of time pushing anyone else. I’ve never seen anything like it in other sports leagues.

    • @amyk6319
      @amyk6319 25 днів тому

      @@georgia_amoorefan I don't disagree that Reese has a large fan base, but she doesn't have nearly as many basketball fans as CC. Though Reese has a lot of basketball fans, she also has a lot who are just fans of Reese as a celebrity or influencer. So Reese's fans don't watch basketball on TV or go to games in the large numbers you get from CC fans.
      And some of the "we only care about Caitlin" is just the tribalism that results from the way the WNBA chose to handle things this season. When they don't give CC the praise she deserved & downplay her accomplishments while making everything a rivalry, you force the fans into an us vs them mentality.
      Most CC fans are fans of basketball who enjoy her games because they are fun to watch, so they just want to watch good basketball. The problem comes when the WNBA &/or the media try to force the fandom into liking only 1 or 2 players they deem worthy of the attention. But you can't force someone to be a fan of a player. You have to give them many options & let them decide who they want to support.

    • @georgia_amoorefan
      @georgia_amoorefan 25 днів тому

      @ that was happening when Caitlin was in college, I’ve been watching her whole career. People do not care to watch anyone outside of her sadly. Also, people most definitely watch and travel for Angel. Again it’s not as much as Caitlin but she’s extremely popular for basketball as well. She literally had 300k+ people tuned in on a grainy stream to watch a pre season game and the league barely put the sky on tv. Her games would be doing 1M+ if they had more.

    • @amyk6319
      @amyk6319 25 днів тому

      @@georgia_amoorefan That has not been my experience. But I, like many CC fans, avoid those social media sites full of trolls. I've seen CC fans talk about how they love watching Dallas (esp Arike) & many also talk about how b/c of CC they are now watching their local WNBA team too. Heck a lot of CC fans were praising Carrington & liked how good she played after CC's 1st game against the Sun, but then Carrington called CC fans racist. And that is the big issue, insulting an entire fanbase & calling them racist won't endear that player or team to CC fans.
      I can't speak to early college comments, but I think there is one thing people don't seem to get about many CC/Iowa fans. They will never root for a stacked/super team. Many CC fans prefer rooting for the underdogs. They can acknowledge the skill of individual players on those teams, but most will never be fans of teams like UConn, South Carolina, Aces & Liberty. And some think those stacked teams are just boring to watch.
      And I never said Reese didn't have fans that watched her games, it is just not anywhere near Fever/CC attendance/viewership. It is just a fact that, other than a couple Liberty games, viewership of Fever games were double & often triple the viewership of every other team in the league on every network/channel that games were aired (ABC, NBC, Ion, ESPN, etc). BTW Twitter views for a video are not real. They are always horribly inflated. Twitter counts every account logged in the general vicinity of a video as a view.

    This might be an unpopular opinion, but I miss the times where there are things to use as an escape from any political/societal talks. Everyone is reading into anything Caitlin says and projecting their own narrative onto her, just let them play basketball without any pressure to be a spokesperson for any and every political position.
    Love hearing your thoughts on it, especially agree with Chauny!

      I am what would be considered a Ron Paul conservative or libertarian with my politics who also happens to like all kinds of basketball including the WNBA and I agree with this.
      I thought right wing using Caitlin as an avatar was very weird considering she’s almost certainly has always been a liberal.
      In the same breath, it’s also not attractive to new mainstream viewers to have the ‘progressive, US politics thrust upon them involuntarily. I don’t have any problem with players being political activists if they want to, just keep it separate from the product on the floor.
      There definitely are some “right wing nutjobs”, however there are also “left wing nutjobs” in the WNBA sphere that want to talk and force the players to talk about hot button political issues all the time. There is just no benefit to it, it’s not going to change anyone’s mind and it’s going to narrow the potential demographic of the viewers and therefore the success of the league.
      Think about it, is there a single openly conservative player, coach, or staff member in the entire WNBA? They would excommunicated from the league.

    all this chit chat about CC and race/privilege is tired. CC broke almost every single record in college BB and the WNBA. Nobody else has done that. Did promoters see a gold mine? Sure! Sports is money and they jumped that train and shoved CC and her accomplishments into the spotlight. Hurray for all. College Ball, the WNBA and women success in sports got a major boost. It's all positive. Sure, there are hundreds of people who built the WNBA from the bottom up. The foundation. Roots! Accolades to each and every one of those talented, dedicated, hard working people. Bottom line. You don't poopoo folks who jump in to support another group. You welcome them, thank them, join forces and move forward... together. NOBODY, during the race revolts in the '60s, told white supports to go away. They welcomed them with open arms to make change. And so they did. Together. Like Morgan Freeman said, "you want to stop racism? Stop talking about it." Focus on people, the individual, not color. This is the 21st century. We're past this. Get with the times. Be a force of positive change.
