    That's insane...The amount of work you do for a cart of coal. Thanks for the insight of the work you do.

    I can remember working in similar conditions back in the late 70s. Private coal mine in New Zealand.

    I worked in various seams in the UK, thickest was 5ft, we had three advancing LW's at Clifton which closed and I ended up at Cotgrave in 1968, seven advancing LW's. Ended in Nov of 68 and had had enough of low faces. Worked other minerals up until I migrated to Oz, where I worked in pillar extraction in a thick seam, then on to a LW producing steam coal for the local power station. 48,000 tonnes a week from 12-14 feet high, three production shifts per day and five days a week. They produced the cheapest coal in the world back then at $13 a tonne delivered to the power station. Now there are mines producing 6-8 million tons a year from ONE face!!

      i love reading your experiences over a very long time and across the world, but most of all i love the past, i know little about Clifton colliery, i'd guess it was working for best part of 100 years and around 100 coal miners including young boys lost there lives, you should write a book. i worked down mines and did some dangerous stuff, but now, the square work at the gate ends can give me nightmares, going under the lip, the tight space, the props and girders quickly wanting to start to buckle, the little steel conveyor and generally so many accidents waiting to happen in such a small space.

      @@MakeAllThingsBeautiful It was closed on it's one hundredth year birthday.It had one of the first Dowty Roofmaster supported faces when I started, powered by hydraulic oil, which later was banned in favour of soluble oil, fire risk. Power loading was still rather a new aspect of longwall mining when I first started my apprenticeship in 1964, I saw lots of new innovations introduced in the industry.

    I've only ever imagined this, first time I've seen any film. My great uncle Jack Roddam worked a narrow seam like this at Sacriston. One day he didn't appear at the end of the shift - lamp not handed in at the cabin. They went down to look for him and found him ok but stowed off - the roof had sounded bad and in his panic he put so many props in he couldn't get out past them. That's the family story anyway.

    • @thelastpit2152
      @thelastpit2152  Рік тому +1

      I think that you are doing Jack a disservice! Stowed off (in our pit anyway) is when you have hewed and shovelled so much coal that you have barred yourself in. I bet the too many props story was a joke, though a lot of close set props among the coal would make the situation worse!

    Is it worth it to get such a small amount of coal?
    Currently 1 kg of coal is worth $.07 U.S. So 600 kg of coal would be $42.00 U.S.
    80 to 90 shovel fulls of coal to make $42 U.S. doesn't seem worth it.

    If it is Anthracite coal especially if its a high grade old vein of coal its worth the labor extracting it. The last of the good hard coal really needs to be conserved for future generations to study.
