@@TheDrinkyDude And now two years later it’s at 317,000 miles (Did a lot of Doordash 2020-2022). Still going smooth. I put 4 new tires and new control arms this year.
Toyota reliability in some of the new ones, but this is an older one, but I guess you're not smart enough to think of that before posting your comment🤡
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. My 2001 Avalon has 426,000 miles and I’ve spent maybe $2,500 on all repairs and maintenance not including oil changes and tires. Everything works. I’ve never added Freon to the AC. I’ve only changed the transmission fluid once. One of my O2 sensor needs replacing and I’m not changing it.
I'm more of a Honda person I guess because I never really liked the look of the Toyota Camry's at the time. I had a 2003 Honda exl for 16 yrs I gave it to my girlfriends son because I decided on an SUV, I got a 2019 Acura RDX with tech package hopefully it will last me as long.
Went off to college in Baltimore from the west coast. My dad got me a 02 Highlander. Graduated and went to work in nyc. The car took punishing ny winters, multiple trips to VT and Toronto ski resorts and thousands of potholes and probably pounds of salt on the underbody and stop and go traffic. Sometimes the car would stay in the parking lot for several weeks at a time. 212k miles and 0 problems. Sold it a few years ago.
I have a 2001 and 2002 highlander AWD, both with 220 thousand plus miles. Running great. Love these SUVS. Not much maintenance other than fluids, brakes, and ignition parts . Suprisingly, I have two of the matrix as well, and have been satisfied with their capabilities other than the lemon manual transmission issues they had in the early years.
The HVAC knob was loose when I bought my 2006 Highlander years ago. It had been loose enough that the jiggling of the knob caused the ribbon cable to come detached in the unit. It was easy to remove the unit, take it apart, and re-solder the connection. It has been functioning perfectly ever since.
Have an 2003 highlander limited 4wd with 390k miles the kids grew up in it. Now the wife drives a 2018 se awd and I drive the 2003. Never have changed transmission fluid. Besides brakes, oil and battires the only thing I have ever done is replaced valve cover gaskets one time. It has never had trans or engine work still has factory water pump, timing belt, starter... etc. Best car we have ever had.
Which ones have you bought? I was looking at getting a 2017 Camry, even test drive it. I’ve heard nothing but good things from my neighbors about how well Toyota’s are.
We are creatures of habit. I grew driving in all of my dads Chevy trucks, had an 07 Colorado and just leased a new 21 Colorado. Almost got a tacoma but the colorados are way nicer and cheaper.
Never get a flush on any car part. Usually they end up damaging the component and is usually a waste of money, if they do it at all. Mechanics call it a wallet flush. Drain and refill yourself to make sure it's done right.
I happen to be a happy owner of two reliable Toyotas, a Previa 93 with 270k miles and a RAV4 07, V6 with 190k miles. They both run great and are still going strong without any problems. All I had to do is give them regular maintenance every 5,000 miles and periodic replacement of wearable parts like filters, new tires, whenever scheduled. They don’t show any signs of giving up! I am very tempted to try a luxurious European vehicle for my next car, but my good experience with Toyotas have always scared me from doing that move. You are absolutely correct Scotty with all your opinions about Toyotas. I also think that these I own were still assembled in Japan, that’s why they perform that way.
Scotty T-Shirts we need: “Still runs like a clock” “Still blows ice cold” “Hey, it’s no race car” “Endless Money Pit” “Shifts like a dream” “Rolling heap of junk” “Up the wazoo” “Still goes down the road”
Miss our 2006 Toyota Camry LE. 2.4-Litre--4-cylinder Automatic. We traded it in at 341,000 kilometres (~211,887 miles) for a 5-Speed Standard 2012 Toyota Corolla (first standard car, had an automatic 1999 Ford F-150 before that). Should have kept the Camry to see how many kilometres we could get onto it. Great videos, Scotty!
Hello from Finland sir! Have been driving 4 Toyota`s before current one. Now have a Rav4 from 2006 with 1AZ-FE engine. Changed british Cougar racing oil to engine and Lubrication Engineers gearbox oil from USA. Mileage is 155000 (250000km) and does not eat oil. Thank you for your videos sir! Excellent content!
I just got a 1994 Nissan Pickup. Red, short bed, 5spd. Just a bad weather vehicle and for grocery shopping here and there. I walk most places. I just wanted a cheap and reliable vehicle, and this reminds me so much of my old Pathfinder I owned for 11 years. My Pathfinder was a 1995 with a 5spd. I got the Pathfinder with 80k and put over 200k on it. Never really had any problems, but I also got regular maintenance. One of my high school friends is a mechanic, and a good one at that. Doesn't rip people off.
Sound advice. When someone asks if their old car that they've owned since new is likely to give them trouble, the answer is, "Keep driving it and get the maximum use/value from it. Cross that bridge if/when you come to it. Don't get rid of it whilst it's working well and give someone else a bargain".
Tried to swap out the headlight assembly, it takes 2 mins in my GMC. You have to take off the Grill and bumper to replace the headlights. BRILLANT TOYOTA DESIGHN !
Bought 02 Highlander at 95,000 miles and shortly after valve seal leaking, one cylinder loses pressure, expensive repair about $2500 with head gasket replacement, but the car still runs, although rustling noise on start up,especially during cold season, and blowing white smoke once in a while from oil burning.
Glad I watched this! Was about to flush my transmission fluid next week in my 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis...!!! Just a transmission fluid change and filter! Got it!!
What I did with my mechanic. I just asked if they flush the transmission fluid before putting a new one. He said no he drains it only. So then I paid them the 70$ for a transmission drain job.
2004 4 runner 4.7 v8 incredible vehicle. 176000 mile not one problem. I do have to change timing belt. Pulls my boat up hills very easily. My friend drove it and he was shocked--said it drove like a new car! It is so tight--TOYOTA QUALITY!
My knock sensors went out on vacation and it shifted back in the drive. I reset the ECM till I got home so it would shift into overdrive. 1400 miles to home in drive would’ve destroyed so much. 210k I changed them out and yeah Scotty what a job that was. I’m in the middle of changing all of my suspension with Mevotech parts and the fuel tank had a split in the seam so I’m changing that and part of my fuel pump filter and pump. Going from Chicago to Montana this vacation. Love Toyota forever!
Thanks for this video! It spoke to me - I own a 2002 Highlander that I don't want to get rid of. Everyone tells me not to bother looking into the oil burning issue (I've done all the basic stuff to try and resolve it) this specific model engine has and to buy a new car. Nope - I'm going to keep my car until the wheels fall off! I'm at 230K+ miles now. And the other stuff Scotty mentioned made me laugh - the frayed seatbelt and the temp control knob because I have the same issues. Great info on the transmission.
Replace your pcv valve. Cheap, easy fix. If that doesn't fix it, then you have a more in depth repair, but still very doable. If you change out the rear valve cover with a newer (2005+) one, it should fix the oil burning/ sludge.
My dads 01 tundra has over half a million miles and runs like a top the old white ones with the white grill that iforce will still pull a house! It has had a head gasket done. Super reliable truck.
I have a 2000 Echo Coupe for 12 years now, all original American spec imported from USA to Latvia. In Europe no one knows what it is and they are rare, I have seen 4 in the past 20 years haha, it's well kept and showing no signs of wear at 185k miles, so weird looking but beautiful nippy town car on smooth pavement, doing 70 mph cruise for 2 hours on weekly rides, yea its paper thin but what Japanese car from that era isn't? Some people have asked is it electric while I'm at the gas station filling up haha! In the winters you can slide that thing so easy and predictably with Blizzaks, its narrow wheel base makes it perfect for sharp transitions, not saying it’s fast but too much fun that cars today lack, the way it grips and corners. New Corollas are too wide too detached even when all driver aids turned off you can't swing them in corners like that. I also have driven 2002 E46 BMW's, mostly 330i in the winters and they are the best, but I don't like that cars maintenance its not bad but nothing close to Japan, while my friend had a clean 1992 Sierra 2.0i that thing was so much fun with its narrow chassis too. In the Echo tho nothing has gone wrong, new exhaust regular oil change, filters and keep adding a bit of oil in small amounts. In my ownership I have taken it to 100mph several times no problem on those long drives then you just run out of gear. To Police Im invisible, Im not reckless, they think nothing of it and just don't stop me in comparison with the BMW. When it snows on beautiful winter nights slide that go kart for the road. It was made in Japan and I love their vision!
At the young age of 22 In 1986 i bought my first new car, a Toyota MR2, 5 speed manual ! Their reliability was amazing back then too !! I kept that car for 7 years (paid it off after 4 years) with 73k miles and NEVER put a dime into for any repairs. Maintenance consisted of my own oil changes every 3k miles, air filters, new battery, spark plugs, two sets of tires and antifreeze flushing. NEVER replaced the brake pads or rotors, always downshifted and engine braked. 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine put out about 110 hp (think it was 112 going on memory), it was a blast to drive.. Honestly I should’ve stuck to Toyota’s after that car, but unfortunately i dove into a bunch of American cars, a couple of Acura’s, Volvo’s and German cars. No surprises that the German cars had electrical problems and even the 2 older Volvos. Now thanks to Scotty i own a 2013 Lexus ES350 (2nd owner, I bought it in Spring of 2019 with only 30k miles ). Original owner only put 4K miles a year on after taking delivery in August 2012. It was virtually new when i bought it, the rear seats were never used, and not a scratch or ding on the exterior. I have the original sticker in the car which shows a $42k MSRP. Considering i paid $17,995 i got an excellent deal and incredible value. It just turned 40k miles about a month ago, I’ll be keeping this one for 10+ years for sure !!

I bought an 09 civic lx for 6400 with only 84k miles on it. As a recent college grad I did the standard maintenance and added a touch screen stereo along with a back up camera to keep the car a bit more modern but this car still shifts and drives smooth still feels like a new 🚗
I just got a Toyota van 2000 for 2000 cash with 277k drive like new I had to change the spark plugs and the coils I was wondering I had the timing done at 139 it was a old person’s car. One owner. Regular oil change every three months. All the maintenance records on Carfax are every three months. Done now all it need is a gas cap and the few injectors and door handles is it safe putting a little more in it it drives like brand new the body is clean in and outside it’s really clean. You can tell whoever had it they take really good care of it. No rust. Original hubcaps original floor mats and the floor has no stains.
03 Toyota Sequoia SR5 2wd 290k miles 08 Toyota Matrix Xr 199k miles Both vehicles had nothing major go wrong. Just some paint blemishes and that's about it. Just buy a good used Toyota and maintain it and you'll have a reliable vehicle that will last longer than most new cars.
My wife owned a pristine 2001Sequoia that had 180k miles. Just had the timing belt serviced and with the wife's Rheumatoid Arthritis she could no longer turn a key in the ignition. That was a great travel vacation vehicle that had many years left on it. I offered to have the ignition changed out to a push button. Lost that discussion. I cried when she traded it in (only got $1000) on a slightly used Highlander.
DGX Detailing Services Ltd I have to admit her RA is pretty severe. She needs a pair of pliers to turn a key and she struggles at that. Can't unscrew a gas cap. She had that Sequoia traded before I could intervene. We already have 3 cars between the two of us and didn't want a fourth. Would love to have that back!
My 2005 Matrix runs great and looks great. Haven’t had a car payment in more than a decade. Just crossed 110K miles - expect it to run fine for another decade.
I have owned my 2001 Lexus GS 430 since '03 and it is still as fun as ever. The only complaint is the steep price of premo gas and my very marginal gas milage. But, I drive it hard and fast so I feel I'm getting something out of it. You have to service them though, just like any car. I bought one of Scotty's scanners, the $50 one, and my rocket car had some codes...I changed out the plugs and condensers and it runs better than ever. Thanks Scotty for all the great vids. Merry Christmas.
When the knock sensors went out on my 2002 sienna 3.0, it did not run fine especially in the summer going up hill. I used premium fuel when first noticed it. Tried regular, didn’t help. Changed sensors, much better now. Thank you!
My Terdcel had a whining screechy noise so I changed alternator belt with new one @ proper tension & after 15 seconds it roared back with the sound blaring from the alternator area. Found a NEW Bosch unit for $32.50 on e bay so I'll keep progress posted. Unit now in there & for over 5 years with maybe 10k-12k on it is an Advanced Auto rebuilt unit.
If you're getting a 2014-2019 Highlander do yourself a favor and get at least the LE Plus. You can't lift the tailgate/pop the trunk from inside the car with the regular LE. To me it's a big deal for every time I pick something up from a store and they can't find where to open the hatch from.
New York is forcing My wife(1996 Avalon) and myself to get a divorce. Reason : her last check up (inspection) was not up to New York standards according to their diagnosis she failed the hearing test(p0330, knock sensor circuit) , and so she needed surgery, If she still want to continue to reside in the Empire state. So I call our insurance and they said that she's over 20 years old and our policy doesn't cover her medical expenses. So I had to dip into my 401k to have her procedure done 3 times only to find out she still have hearing(p0325,0330 knock sensor) problems. One day she told me: "Baby we had some great times. Although we couldn't have kids, we definitely commuted many. We may not of traveled the world, but our distance covered it almost 10 times (248,000mi). I'll sign the divorce papers on the condition that you would remarry one of my younger sisters, and continue to live a joyful life". I smiled and said "I'm not parting from our vows because of State prejudices against you. You've been faithful and loyal to me since we met. Myself on the other hand I fell short and you know my infidelity with you(Mercedes e300), Yet you could of deserted me in Nevada rt 50 with low coolant. not to mention I got away with you from the skin of my teeth from road thugs in New Mexico. Anyways your heart(1mzfe) is steadily beating. We also know your other older siblings(Camry, highlander) and cousins(es300, RX300) have the same condition as time goes by. Your stoic family traits and sense of dependability has taught me how to have resolve and a strong sense of character in all adversity. My dear! lets see what Tennessee have to offer.
My vehicle has the same engine (1MZ-FE). It currently has 101k miles and is smooth as butter. Can sustain 80mph on the freeway comfortably at 2600rpms in 5th gear. Have yet to replace the factory spark plugs.
@@TrisjensChronicles1203 depends ... I got a 1.6 l GDI engine and it's so far working fine at 114 k as long as you keep it cleaned out ... Im cant speak on the larger 4 cylinder engines
Wow, my '98 Avalon 1MZ-FE 246,xxx mile 3.0 only uses a quart every 8K. Maybe the Amsoil has something to do with it. Great advise on the transmission too. Scotty's advise is some of the best anywhere.
i still prefer fords, mainly cos im an aussie and the locally built models were extremely well built, right now i drive a 19 year old ford falcon utility, 2002 model, just over 295k on the clock, 5 speed manual with a DOHC straight six, known as the barra, i bought it off my dad who bought it off concreter who used it as a work vehicle, had it for nearly a year now, only trouble i had was the clutch slave cylinder failing, ended up replacing the entire clutch anyways (it was the original clutch too), did the work myself with my dad. but its going as strong as ever, itll be even better when i replace the spark plugs and ignition coil packs next week lol
My 06 highlander with 187k miles runs amazing. It’s so quiet and comfortable that I forget how old it is. I do need to change the struts and maybe the power steering pump. It is making that annoying humming noise. Other than that it has been amazing. I put two bike racks on the roof and two more bikes on the two hitch plus tall the beach gear and the car just keeps going. I’m going to keep it for another 10 years.
I miss the 1985- early 90s Tacoma's.. they were the bomb! Lol they're getting hard to find & way more expensive than they were 10 years ago.. I'd like to see a Pontiac with that kind of value.. ☺
Those P51 Mustangs were hi hum performance wise until...the took out the Alison engines and put in Rolls Royce Merlin engines and then...best propeller driven fighter of the war!! But I’ve got a soft spot for the P47 Thunderbolt, nicknamed the Jug, short for Juggernaut! Huge and durable in its performance in dogfighting and ground attack roles! Scotty should check out that engine!!
Every time I see someone in an older Highlander I ask them if they keep those nuts behind the climate control knobs tight. So many don't know about it, I was one of those... My wife drove an 06 model and hers had been so loose for so long the ribbon/wire going from the knob broke. The dealer said it couldn't be fixed at that point. $950 to replace!!! I took the whole works out and took it to a computer repair shop. 20 minutes and $40 later it was as good as new... Go figure...
I just bought a 2006 toyota highlander with 254k miles. Nothing is broke, all factory stuff, no real scratches of note. It needs some typical maintenance stuff as far as suspension. Hoping it last another 250k.
Every time I see this generation of Highlander, I'm reminded of that infamous security cam video of the out of control Highlander smashing into a garage over and over and then doing a reverse 180 into the street and killing itself on the curb.
I got a 1977 Celica (20R Engine) in mid 1992 it said 47k miles ,, likely 147k miles, fixed it up. And saw it roll over twice so when I sold It in 2005 it had almost 400k or more miles. And I got 200k out of one clutch. Parts were just getting too difficult to find. This was before rock auto. The reacquiring problem I had was the clutch master cylinder kept going out. I went thru 5 of them and 1 slave cylinder and 1 clutch. They had a mid model year design change and I had the older one. Starting with DOM 7/1977 they changed to the improved 1978 design . Still it was a fun car to drive. My father had a 1984 corolla Must have over 500k miles on it Original engine was rebuilt and then when it went. He got a used engine for it from Japan. Up untill year ago it was still going , but hey let it sit too long and ethanol got to the carb and likely has a stuck needle valve.
My 04 hyundai sonata burns/leaks .5 quarts every tank of gas. Its got 236k miles of stop and go city driving with a lead foot. The shocks come out the mounts when i hit bumps on the highway. Ive havent rotated the tires ever. Transmission slips. Longterm fuel trim is -10% at 2500 rpm its got several emissions faults including bad cat bad 02 sensors and knock sensor codes. Ive put 30k miles on it that way and in only 14 months. Needs a new front suspension. But it still will do 100 on the highway like a scolded dog.
@@johnaverick7468 South of the salt line they will go almost forever. Hard to find. They only sold 25000 a year for 5 years. about half of them are gone.
@@johnaverick7468 They were made in Japan. It is a workhorse car. 100% dependable. Yaris replaced the Echo. I don’t know anything about them. Echos are cheap and easy to fix yourself. They are the Toyota version of the old VW Beetle.

Never get a flush on any car part. Usually they end up damaging the component and is usually a waste of money, if they do it at all. Mechanics call it a wallet flush. Drain and refill yourself to make sure it's done right.

My Nissan Frontier is on 220K miles and I use it for work ! No problems and I recently changed the timing belt and water pump myself 🙌
Sound advice. When someone asks if their old car that they've owned since new is likely to give them trouble, the answer is, "Keep driving it and get the maximum use/value from it. Cross that bridge if/when you come to it. Don't get rid of it whilst it's working well and give someone else a bargain".
what i want for christmas is every mechanic being honest like scotty.
Have an 02 with 280,xxx miles, and still runs good and sounds smooth.

I’ve got a 2006 Highlander and I’ve driven it all over the country. It’s still going strong at 210k miles.
My knock sensors went out on vacation and it shifted back in the drive.

The reacquiring problem I had was the clutch master cylinder kept going out. I went thru 5 of them and 1 slave cylinder and 1 clutch. They had a mid model year design change and I had the older one. Starting with DOM 7/1977 they changed to the improved 1978 design .
