    No one's talking about the cross-fade to the odd time signature part in the Microchip theme.

      yeah, tbh I was really weirded out by that part but not very many people will catch onto just how nuts that is to simulate on NES hardware like that

    • @TheGreatGario
      @TheGreatGario 3 роки тому +16

      if you really want to break your brain on this take note of the fact that he's simulating two different tempos on the crossfade at the same time
      on what was effectively a tracker
      two different simultaneous tempos on a f'cking tracker *head explodes*

      Notice how the triangle channel actually plays for a shorter and shorter time to give it the illusion of going quieter! Quite a neat way to pull that off when the triangle channel has no volume control.

    9:18 Those drums are phenomenal! They sound so clear and rich

    • @primateprime6000
      @primateprime6000 2 роки тому +14

      It's actually because the third channel, the bass triangle, is actually going up and down very quickly to make a loud 'click' sound. It gets played in sync with the actual drums to give them a bit more punch. You can tell by the way the third channel looks everytime there's a beat. Not many NES composers actually figured it out properly, but Jeroen Tel and Tim Follin are the more popular ones to make use of this method

    • @NEStalgia
      @NEStalgia 2 роки тому +5

      @@primateprime6000 Yeah. I also saw this technique being used by Neil Baldwin and the sound programmers at Sunsoft (and we can't forget about Geoff Follin)

      @ManiacalForeigner 4 місяці тому

      @@primateprime6000 So it's basically the opposite of what Nobuyuki Shioda did on the Recca OST, where he set the triangle channel very low specifically to _avoid_ popping, but resulting in a characteristic "hiss" throughout.

      He went on to even compose for a Starsky & Hutch game! I don't know the exact details, but it is not chip music, that's for damn sure. A lot of his magic was already lost there, like the wacky time sigs and the prog rock influence.
