  • I'm finally sharing my ninth grade curriculum choices! Homeschooling high school was a brand new endeavor for both me and my teenager, so I'm sharing our experience with a high school curriculum choices review. Choosing homeschool curriculum for high school felt like a big undertaking. I sought mostly literature based curriculum that was Charlotte Mason inspired for our high school homeschool curriculum. Since I only have one high school homeschooler and my other learners are much younger, I also looked for curriculum that was mostly self-guided. Overall, with some tweaks, I think our ninth grade curriculum choices worked out well, and I definitely learned some things that have prepared me to make future high school homeschool curriculum choices for a Charlotte Mason inspired high school experience. Hope you enjoy this high school homeschool review!

Without knowing the situation I can speak myself as a niece who was in kinship care with an aunt and uncle, and it sounds like you have really made it a point to treat her as you treat your other children, including in education. It was a major source of pain for me to be treated differently than my cousins, so I just want to encourage you for whatever that journey is that it’s clear you have put so much thought into her homeschool experience.

I cannot tell you enough how much I LOVED this video! First, how amazing that you've welcomed your niece into your home, and are giving her such a great high school experience by homeschooling her. That's really awesome! Second, I've used Heart of Dakota for over 12 years now, and it's very, very good. The high school levels are really good, and I'm glad to see how you're using what works and what you like and finding something else for the subjects that don't fit your needs as well. You have a good mindset on what's important for your niece, and are really meeting her where she's at and giving gentle guidance and challenge where appropriate....good job!! Love Heart of Dakota, and I encourage you to keep on with the next guides....they're really good! Looking forward to more homeschool content, and praying your new year of school is very blessed!! ♥️

My high schooler has been a part of an online charter for the past two years of high school. I was able to choose the curriculum, but I found more basic/typical curriculum choices were easier to use with her instructors timelines. She also had access to extra resources and labs. She used Life of Fred for geometry, Notgrass for World Civ, Apologia for Marine Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology (yes she took two science classes...it's her love), Essentials in Writing/literature for LA along with lots of reading, Spanish was a mix of her teacher's resources and compass classroom, she takes music from personal instructors off and on (alternating vocal/piano), Simply Charlotte Mason for Shakespeare to go along with both theater (taken at a private school locally) and her LA unit. She's also been doing some dual enrollment. This coming year she wants to do less with her online charter and more with me!

I love how you handled the 9th grader's intro to homeschool. You went for Wins and confidence building! I love that. She has a few years to build up to a rigorous academic load, no need to overwhelm or intimidate. I have always enjoyed your homeschool experience content! Keep it coming. I look forward to hearing about your plans for next year.🥰

I loved hearing about your foray into homeschooling a high schooler! I'm sending my rising 9th grader off to a building for high school (their choice!) so things will be quiet around here with just one at home this year, but it will also be nice to focus on just one! I'd love it if he goes off to high school (in a building) too, but who knows what will happen! Science in our house is really important - I spent time as a Biology major in college, so it's a passion/interest for me personally. We do labs once or twice a week. Labs are the fun part of science! They are also where kids learn how to "do science" - for me, science is not memorizing a bunch of terms and facts and concepts - it's learning to make observations about the world. But! Some kids just aren't that into it, and if you let some things go, that's the beauty of homeschooling - you don't have to do it all! Thanks for sharing your experiences. :)

Thank you! I’m actually outsourcing biology this year, and Keira will get consistent exposure to labs. I’m so excited for her! I think outsourcing these upper level sciences is going to be so helpful. So much of last year was a learning curve for both of us, and I feel really good going into her tenth grade year. This past year almost feels like practice, and now this next year we both have more of our footing. I’m thankful for our educational options!

This is great! Thank you so much. When my child was beginning we used a CM learning to read/write program (simply Charlotte mason) and my child did so well in spelling. This was due to a word building style. As she grew, she did not understand the style of CM for spelling. She has excelled with phonetic zoo from IEW. It’s something she can do independently too, with a cd and earphone. She loves it and we will continue.

Thank you! With my niece coming from a traditional public school background, I’m really not sure how she received spelling instruction before she came to our home. I remember lots of word lists in my public school upbringing. I do know that when she’s heard me prompt my daughter Kennedy with a reminder of a spelling rule when she’s sounding something out phonetically to spell, Keira has said things like, “Oh, I didn’t know that’s why it’s spelled that way.” I think she needs to be taught some of those fundamental rules.

Wow I loved how you handled the Bible curriculum issue and were sensitive to not discouraging her, still learning and teaching truth, but not overwhelming for the sake of doing something challenging. She will learn so much from your heart and care in this situation than she would’ve from the curriculum! (Maybe not academia wise 😉 but I mean in the LIVING your faith and growing character way! EQ not IQ- which is so much more important!)❤

Couldn’t do TT or Saxon, TT didn’t explain enough so we switched in pre Alg to Learn math fast and it’s amazing. Child’s in Alg 2 and it’s one lesson on Monday, work out the 12 problems during the week, learn it and move on. Trade school here.

Great video and ideas. Love your channel. I just graduated my youngest son this year. He just got accepted to college for Software Development. Now I am homeschooling my 3 grandkids from my oldest....1st, kinder and preschool. I love it. We are eclectic. Lots of curriculum from all places...and I sometimes write my own. Man I'm such s geek...lol. Anyway, blessings from Ohio on this new school year.

Unless your niece is interested in a career involving science, then the lab could just be a few experiments every other week or every two weeks connected to the subject of study. A lab write up would be great to add on, showing the methodology and her observations. Also check out Sabbbath Mood Homeschool science curriculum. It is Charlotte Mason inspired. If you want look into her taking a community college science course as possibilty when she enters 11th or 12th grade. She will acquire credits for high school and credits to transfer to a 4 year institution.

For us, we did all the labs because I graduated two boys so far and they were all about the hands-on components. Apologia's chemistry (the Dr. Wile version) used household chemicals, so it was easy to get the required components without having to get an expensive lab kit. Colleges are the ones that might require a certain number of lab courses in high school, so I'd check with some various colleges to see what their requirements are.
I also hate how people criticize Teaching Textbooks. I used that program with my two older boys - Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry (with one boy) and being that I studied math through calculus, I found they were excellent algebra courses. Are they the MOST rigorous? Maybe not but they taught everything I learned in my 2 algebra high school courses. It was more than adequate for my kids to do very well in the math portion of the SAT/ACT. The geometry I didn't have a good experience with though - not that it wasn't good, it's just that you don't have to memorize proofs to do well in the course. You DO, however, have to memorize the proofs to do well in the geometry portion of the college admittance testing. The fill-in-the-blank style of Teaching Textbooks allowed my son so just 'logic' his way through it, and then he couldn't remember anything for the college testing.

We outsourced biology this year with a course that uses Apologia, and it’s been great! We tried something else but returned to Teaching Textbooks. It’s what works best for us.

We are still working on strengthening basic math skills, so my 9th grader did Simply Good and Beautiful Math Level 5. He did TGTB High School LA year 1. He plays the French Horn in the public high school's concert band for a performing arts credit. We do everything else family style. History was TGTB years 1 and 2. I pieced together a zoology course for science with some TGTB and some Easy-Peasy. Bible is Easy-Peasy. Foreign language is Latin. We have to be finished with the school day by noon so we can get him to band on time. He spends his afternoons exploring whatever he is interested learning. He's researched Viking metal work, medieval armor and chainmail, WWI and WWII aircraft (and built to scale models), and ship building through the ages. He's basically done enough research and projects in his free time, for fun, that he's earned a World History credit, a Modern History credit, and a half credit in physics.

As far as labs go, I've noticed a trend as to how a lab is offered every week, which is a bit much, I agree. I say it depends on the how the curriculum is laid out. If the curriculum is very upfront information heavy, either in the form of reading or videos before you even get to the lab, then the lab is optional week to week. You can do it if there is interest/time/materials available, but it is not required. Then there are other curriculums where the information is light, maybe just a reading page or two, view a diagram, that sort of thing, but the lab is very in depth, those labs are required. In those labs that is where the bulk of the understanding of science comes into play, as they teach you the science while doing the lab in a very hands on/project oriented way.

I started homeschooling before the pandemic due to issues with no help for dyslexia, I was partly homeschooled but I didn’t think we’d be able to homeschool so we put it off unfortunately!!! We recently moved and we built a bigish house with my brother and his family so my nephew came along on the homeschool ride but he’s only just started homeschooling him!!! He’s the same age as my twins so they often work together well!!! We’ve been told that a year of personal bible time can be used as credit but it depends upon the state requirements!!!

My son is in the 9th grade. We do CC ( classical conversations) on Tuesdays every week, and homeschool the other 4 days. The assignments he receives on Tuesdays takes him all week til the following Tuesday of CC. I have been trying to keep up on grading him ( I made a homemade grade recording book), but now I have to find a Transcript for him on everything from high-school for graduating and college. I'm at a loss. I also feel like he needs extra curriculum for this reason. I'm so afraid it's not going to be enough . Any suggestions please?

From what I understand of high school level CC, I don’t think it would be necessary to add anything. I’d definitely consult someone on your community though.

Phonetic Zoo from IEW would be an independent and effective way for her to strengthen her spelling. There are three levels, and that should catch her up.
