X: 10 Best Songs (x3)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Our top x songs from seminal LA punkabilly band X.
X became critical darlings with their first four Ray Manzarek produced albums in the early 80s. Critics loved them, but they never quite broke through despite the more polished Ain't Love Grand! After the departure of Billy Zoom in 87, the band went with Blasters guitarist Dave Alvin for one album and then six years later tried the alternative route with Hey, Zeus! The band split, but reunited in 2020 with all the original members for Alphabetland.
Unless you're crazy, your favorite songs should come primarily from the 1980-1984 era.
Although not on an album, their version of WILD THING was featured as Ricky Vaughn's entrance music in the classic Major League.
Check out our picks (minus the ones that aren't available on streaming services) by visiting our Spotify playlist: open.spotify.c...

Love it! - “They say more in two minutes and 30 seconds than most bands say in five!!!”🔥
These Friday/Saturday uploads are taking some mental adjustment. But back-to-back albums and song videos for X were a fun part of my Saturday morning.
The punk tag gets thrown out to any short-haired guitar band from the late 70s/early 80s with a little attitude. X certainly gained something from the West Coast punk scene.
But their heritage is Link Wray through The Cramps. And by the 80s country and rockabilly were more palatable thanks to the likes of Elvis Costello and The Fall.
X in my mind is forever co-joined with Rank and File and early Jason & the Scorchers who I also liked at the time.
The original X line-up opened for Squeeze a few years ago, and even in their dotage, they managed to bring energy and entertain.
Los Angeles - 40 years later the protagonist stormed the Capitol. We knew what they were like back then.
The World's A Mess; It's in my Kiss - A statement of how some of us felt in the 80s.
4th of July - Dave Alvin joins and the Americana sound becomes far more pronounced.
Adult Book - The short sharp shock of punk lyrics turned on its head by Exene's surprising turn of phrase.
We're having Much More Fun - Yes they were!
Nausea - Worth watching Decline Of Western Civilization just for this track.
Devil Doll - Maybe the inspiration or relation of Dan Clowes's short comic piece of the same name. He adds the question mark Devil Doll?
The Hungry Wolf - DJ Bonebrake rules on this track. The two singers intertwined are their best sound also.
The Have-nots - If The Fall's Fiery Jack was American.
The New World - 40 years older this new world is still capable of disappointing.
Indeed. An X album and song ranking is a real event for me. Also, appreciate your comments and observations.
We share 5 out of 10 on this list.
And already the next question: Were The Fall ever punk? 40+ albums and no answer, but most likely none is needed. Some bands simply do not need a classification, they are just unique.
Interesting to trace X back to Link Wray...The Swag, Raw-Hide.
Billy Zoom played, briefly, with Gene Vincent and you can hear the influence of Vincen't's first guitarist, Cliff Gallup, on Zoom's style. Check out Vincent's Catman for my favorite Gallup moments.
@@roxannewalsh The Fall are 100% beyond classification. Mostly I find the groups that managed to slide through on punk's coattails are far more interesting than those that tried to adhere to its manifesto
@@johnlefsky8731 Thanks! I did not know about the Gene Vincent connection

A compromise is a top 12. 12 Los Angeles. 11 Johnny Hit and Run Paulene. 10 When Our Love Passed out on the Couch. 9 it's Who You Know. 8 Poor Girl. 7 Motel Room in my Bed. 6 Blue Spark. 5 Universal Corner. 4 Sugarlight. 3 In This House That I Call Home. 2 The Have Nots. 1 White Girl. @@TastesLikeMusic If you dig Sugarlight then check The Cramps Mad Daddy - the untamed version came out almost on the same day (even if the band had played the song in their live set before).

Interesting choice for number one John. Many moons ago when my friend introduced me to X, he stated that The World's A Mess was the only song on the album he disliked. I always loved it. Nice list.
@@toddhill7483 Thanks. The title alone captures the essence of most of my 80's relationships, so the song chose itself.

Nice list Roxanne. Don't see My Goodness on anyone's list. A nice change up from them.
@@toddhill7483 My Goodness reminds of Television/Tom Verlaine.
When are you getting back to classic rock ?
Does Warren Zevon count? He’s next.
@@TastesLikeMusic yeah. When is Jethro Tull?
Just want to leave a couple of corrections for your bio of the band:
1. X was never a "punkabilly" band. Yes, regardless of Zoom's rockabilly influences. He was a rockabilly guitarist in a punk rock band. I can name nary a song by X that can be considered punkabilly. Maybe Beyond and Back?
2. Billy left the band in '86
3. X reunited in 1998 with all it's original members, not in 2020 to record Alphabetland. They played sporadically up until 2004 when they began touring yearly and have done so ever since. So for all intent and purposes the band officially reunited no later than 2004. But in my view it was '98 because thats when I first saw them....reunited.
I didn’t know punkabilly was a real thing. But if you ask some of the more combative folks on this channel you’ll be told that X aren’t punk, so that’s up in the air. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic well X are punk. They are not hard-core punk. They are not political or particularly anti social. They are not leftist. They are more personal. This is why many will say "they aren't punk." X were always about the music and the songs. Some cannot accept that. They rejected hard-core punk and refused to be spit on while onstage. They refused being given the middle finger and snot being flung on them. People getting stomped in the pit by buffoons. They were always about the music and the songs. That's it. In late 2019 on Billy's Facebook group he had to intervene and say "NO POLITICS!" People were getting riled up on his page. In response to one of my comments he answered "Punk rock was always about music. I don't know where all these leftist came from?" I tend to agree, others disagree. But for those who say X are not a punk band? There is no basis for that musically or lyrically. None. They may not be political or hard-core but do you have to be to be "punk?" I would argue not.
1 True Love Part II. See I can like a funky groove. But should be lower on list
2 The Have Nots
3 White Girl
4 Los Angeles
5 Johnny Hit and Run
6 The World's A mess, It's in My Kiss
7 Cyrano Deberger's Back
8 Free
9. 4th of July
10 When Our Love Passed our on the Couch
11 Hungry Wolf
12 I'll Stand Up for You
I don't have a real list because I dont know so many of their songs and never liked them much though they were bad at all. I give a slight edge to Joe's list. X seems like punk but with some heavy folk and rockabilly and hipness too, sort of dangerous and sweet. Nowhere as good as the Sex Pistols but then I am not that into Punk more in the New Wave part of the ocean.
I feel near nostalgic for a band I never liked much because I sort of like Alphabetland. The new album could be better than some older albums. I dunno. The song Alphabet Rock is catchy enough. Free" is an good rocker and the guitar is reminiscent of the song Ballroom Blitz (just noting, not critiquing). Water and Wine" swings and rocks. I Gotta Fever" is a bit Replacementesque. Cryrano Deberger's Back uses a variation of the riff from Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" by Springsteen and uses a sax (just noting, not critiquing) and is pretty good.
On their latest I didn't like Strange Life, Delta88 Nightmare, Star Chambered. All the Time in the World" is an Xcessive jazzy morality tale with a strong nihilistic stance a la Jim Morrison at his worse.
Oh c’mon they were way better than the Sex Pistols in every way. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Respectfully we differ. With only one record they have 4 songs better than anything by X. Pretty Vacant, Did you Know Wrong, Anarchy in the UK, God save the Queen are those. Rolling Stone Mag and Readers Poll have Sex Pistols higher - Ha not that record polls means anything to me.
@@oppothumbs1 I love Bollocks,so many great songs....But X is better. Now Wire on the other hand..... it's close
@@painless465 I hear ya. They could possibly be better if the Sex Pistols continued to record and put out a lot more records that were not as good as Bollocks.
