Gliders at the Long Mynd is a composition that has mainly been inspired by piano works by Maurice Ravel and Franz Liszt (‘Pavane pour une infante défunte’ and ‘Chasse-neige’ respectively). This is through the piano techniques used as well as melodies and harmonies. The piece could be considered to be in either a sonata or ternary form, although the middle section is focused on developing the melodic material from the first section. Throughout the piece, the melodic lines are intended to depict a glider’s path, calmly at first and then becoming more frantic.
Whilst growing up, I was particularly interested in flying model aircraft (inspired by my father) and the Long Mynd was the place in which we launched our models, to absolutely no success. This piece came about when sorting out aircraft kits and fixing the planes to hopefully fly again.
