Was following along with this, just to be clear it looks like the initial 2018 equity purchase from Valve was for $9m on top of the loan for $1m, so it wasn't small. Both the loan and the equity purchase have the same exact date and are referred to in the lawsuit proceedings (though the proceedings never mention the amount of the equity purchase). The SEC filing for the $9m doesn't specify Valve's name but it states that it all comes from a single investor. So Valve's initial investment was actually the largest out of everyone (and larger than the $5m in 2020--whoever it was). That $9m was likely used to build out their factory and get them off of the ground to actually produce this technology at scale. Probably explains why Valve was pissed about this new investor.
Every time I hear more about what Valve may be working on, the more hyped I get. Let’s hope they don’t disappoint. As a side note, I don’t think we’ll get the index 2 or any major product announcements until a few months after the steam deck (at the very minimum), unless oculus forces their hand with the quest 3/2 pro.
Mine is pretty strong, without glasses, light points are only not stretched at about 10cm from my face, I can't read the letters in my keyboard at all starting at about 30cm with one eye and 15cm with the other; and if I remember correctly, the lenses on regular VR headsets put the screens at a virtual distance of about something like between 2 and 5 meters, which supposedly close to where people with perfect eyes focus when they relax their focusing muscles.

Used to be I was so nearsighted I couldn't find my glasses without wearing my glasses if I didn't know to the mm where they were. Got an operation but they kinda missed the astigmatism, still totally worth it :)
@@FiliusFidelis I have myopia as well; but the astigmatism is much stronger; the blurring starts looking like motion-blur/long-exposure way before it starts getting out of focus the normal way. This is after cornea transplants to treat keratoconus; with the distortion I was getting from keratoconus, it was getting to the point I couldn't read anything even when wearing glasses with the right prescription. But because of the cornea transplants, I can't get laser surgery, the laser would carve too much.

This is what I thought of when you showed that toggle in Steam VR. Saw someone feature the upcoming Lynx headset in a video roughly a month ago. Not a review, just news about the headset and company's existence. Apparently, this French company was developing a commercial grade AR headset for 2 years already, but saw the market get taken over by the Quest 2, and decided to re-design their headset to compete with the Quest 2. A person at the company said they don't want to live in a world where VR is controlled by Facebook. Apparently the Kickstarter is to measure interest. It's also scheduled to happen today, on the 5th of October, 2021. I have hopes this will be a headset Kickstarter that actually delivers. Considering it's a real company behind it. It's also based in the EU, where they have better privacy laws than the USA. So there is that as well.
Ngl. I saw the last patent video and just thought those lenses were some sci-fi goals sorta shit that wouldn't come out for several years. They seems so advanced passed what I would thought the next step would be for VR. Just knowing they are actually in full development and could hit the market really soon is enough to get my mouth watering.
I know it seems very Sci-Fi, which is what makes near future VR tech just so exciting. And why I call this stuff Next-Gen. We are closer to big leaps than we think. And when this hits market soon, we will totally see that for real.
Brad you are the man of the hour. I am not only interested in this topic but as enthusiastic as you are. For one, there is an older age group market who has trouble focusing near, and this group is untapped. Also, if VR is to become a mainstay in our culture, I think it will need to be applicable to more then just younger eyes. I had a tech thought, if only the point of eye focus needed to be in focus on the display and the rest was out of focus, that would save a great deal of screen data. Glad to hear about the warped lens stuff regarding astigmatism, was a bit unsure if something extra was needed for those of us with that. Currently I use the Index (since january, OG Vive from 2018 till then) without any glasses or any special lenses. I don't have any real noticeable issues seeing in it, but then again I didn't find out how bad my vision was until summer last year lol. Might look into checking out some of the VR optician lenses later. Anyways I'm very much hype about this development too!

They should want anyone to put on the the PSVR 2 and feel comfortable. I would pay extra for this tech!

this is a random suggestion but you seem to have very animated hands. with that VR glove you could see if you find a way to show a VR version of your hand in real time on your monitor with some cool skin for it and a cool background.
New VR optics are very much needed, Fresnel lenses are getting old and are the main sore spot for VR, some better than others, some not so great. Oculus (FB) patented their Hybrid Fresnel lenses which is so unfortunate, how my Valve Index could be so much better with these Hybrid Fresnel lenses. For my dopey eyes, nothing comes close to the huge sweet spot and clarity of the Oculus optics. And I also use prescription inserts in all my headsets (yes, it gets expensive). I love my Index but often wonder how much better it could be with better optics thus no glare or god rays and a huge sweet spot!

Patents don't mean products, yes normally.. but we are talking Valve %99 software oriented so why would they spent money and time on something they are not going to build.
Valve obviously wanted to protect their investment and supply chain. I wonder if Valve also wants a cut of anything sold/supplied to other customers. Might have got some percentage cut type deal.
I am not a lawyer: So in March '20 IO gets $5mil investment from a new entity, presumably later in March '20 Valve cancels the MSA, April '20 Valve sues, in Oct. '20 they file that they settled, in Dec. '20 they dismiss the suit, then in Feb. '21 Valve files a bunch of patents that basically cover a huge part of what ImagineOptix says they work on. It would seem that Valve got control of the technology as the basis of the settlement. At least for VR. I wonder if IO might still own the underlying tech and wether Valve's patents just cover how the tech could be applied to VR? So who is the new investor? FB and Apple came to mind for me, but in reading about IO's tech, I wonder if some sort of military contractor might be another possibility. IO's site mention things like "rifle scopes" and "satellites." Being able to dynamical compensate for stuff like atmospheric aberrations would be a big deal for the "unlimited budget" realm of military stuff and spy satellites. If the new investor was FB or Apple, that would certainly explain why Valve would be pissed off, but it would be strange for Valve to get control of this tech for VR if it was Apple or FB. Another thing that came to mind would be that the new investor wanted to hog whatever manufacturing capacity IO may have, so they couldn't meet Valve's manufacturing timeline, thus Valve cancels the MSA and sues for the money back.
It's possible they reinstated a deal with IO. Someone gave me full court documents after I complained I didn't have access to them in this video. And it seems they might not have fully cancelled the MSA. I truly think Valve wants IO to manufacture for them. They invested 9 million on top of the 1 mil loan in 2018 so that IO could build a factory focused on building Valve lenses
@@SadlyItsBradley You've got me fully hyped on this (even though I still have zero idea how the polarizing lens system would work to correct for overall correction/astigmatism!) so I really hope that's true! Definitely possible that the new investor asked for X, Valve freaked out, sued, and then they all came to a positive resolution (including letting Valve file patents on the cool tech) and that they are humming along towards producing an amazing Index 2!

I hope the index 2 comes out soon. I'm sure the steam deck is in it's future. It seems kinda funny to release a steam deck when they're focused so much on VR unless they're related. I think the index 2 might have the same hardware and they'll work together somehow. Kinda like putting two graphics cards together. The normies that don't like VR for whatever reason can still have a steam deck though. So my prediction is there won't be an index 2 announced until the steam deck(or 3rd party hardware that meets valves requirements for the index 2) are able to ship the same day as an order.

I have astigmatism and the quest 1 lenses work just fine for me without glasses so I don’t know what the other people with astigmatism are complaining about
well - how much astigmatism do you have? mild astigmatism (lets say < 0.75 diopters) is really a non-issue for vr-headsets (they are still blurry enough that you cant see a difference anyway). many people even dont notice their mild astigmatism in the real world (that is until they admire the new sharpness of the world after it gets properly corrected :-) )

this is a random suggestion but you seem to have very animated hands. with that VR glove you could see if you find a way to show a VR version of your hand in real time on your monitor with some cool skin for it and a cool background.

New VR optics are very much needed, Fresnel lenses are getting old and are the main sore spot for VR, some better than others, some not so great. Oculus (FB) patented their Hybrid Fresnel lenses which is so unfortunate, how my Valve Index could be so much better with these Hybrid Fresnel lenses. For my dopey eyes, nothing comes close to the huge sweet spot and clarity of the Oculus optics. And I also use prescription inserts in all my headsets (yes, it gets expensive). I love my Index but often wonder how much better it could be with better optics thus no glare or god rays and a huge sweet spot!

Valve obviously wanted to protect their investment and supply chain. I wonder if Valve also wants a cut of anything sold/supplied to other customers. Might have got some percentage cut type deal.

I am not a lawyer: So in March '20 IO gets $5mil investment from a new entity, presumably later in March '20 Valve cancels the MSA, April '20 Valve sues, in Oct. '20 they file that they settled, in Dec. '20 they dismiss the suit, then in Feb. '21 Valve files a bunch of patents that basically cover a huge part of what ImagineOptix says they work on. It would seem that Valve got control of the technology as the basis of the settlement. At least for VR. I wonder if IO might still own the underlying tech and wether Valve's patents just cover how the tech could be applied to VR? So who is the new investor? FB and Apple came to mind for me, but in reading about IO's tech, I wonder if some sort of military contractor might be another possibility. IO's site mention things like "rifle scopes" and "satellites." Being able to dynamical compensate for stuff like atmospheric aberrations would be a big deal for the "unlimited budget" realm of military stuff and spy satellites. If the new investor was FB or Apple, that would certainly explain why Valve would be pissed off, but it would be strange for Valve to get control of this tech for VR if it was Apple or FB. Another thing that came to mind would be that the new investor wanted to hog whatever manufacturing capacity IO may have, so they couldn't meet Valve's manufacturing timeline, thus Valve cancels the MSA and sues for the money back.
It's possible they reinstated a deal with IO. Someone gave me full court documents after I complained I didn't have access to them in this video. And it seems they might not have fully cancelled the MSA. I truly think Valve wants IO to manufacture for them. They invested 9 million on top of the 1 mil loan in 2018 so that IO could build a factory focused on building Valve lenses
@@SadlyItsBradley You've got me fully hyped on this (even though I still have zero idea how the polarizing lens system would work to correct for overall correction/astigmatism!) so I really hope that's true! Definitely possible that the new investor asked for X, Valve freaked out, sued, and then they all came to a positive resolution (including letting Valve file patents on the cool tech) and that they are humming along towards producing an amazing Index 2!

I hope the index 2 comes out soon. I'm sure the steam deck is in it's future. It seems kinda funny to release a steam deck when they're focused so much on VR unless they're related. I think the index 2 might have the same hardware and they'll work together somehow. Kinda like putting two graphics cards together. The normies that don't like VR for whatever reason can still have a steam deck though.
So my prediction is there won't be an index 2 announced until the steam deck(or 3rd party hardware that meets valves requirements for the index 2) are able to ship the same day as an order.

I have astigmatism and the quest 1 lenses work just fine for me without glasses so I don’t know what the other people with astigmatism are complaining about
well - how much astigmatism do you have? mild astigmatism (lets say < 0.75 diopters) is really a non-issue for vr-headsets (they are still blurry enough that you cant see a difference anyway). many people even dont notice their mild astigmatism in the real world (that is until they admire the new sharpness of the world after it gets properly corrected :-) )
