Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. There's even a video where Michael B. Jordan (himself a bona-fide Buff Dude) has talked about how Hugh set the blueprint for superhero physiques in Hollywood
That frankly seems ridiculous. Jackman is an amazing actor, seems like a swell guy, nothing but respect for his jawdropping transformation, but in the fitness world he's mostly known for his bad genetics. By the time he made his infamous emergence from the tank in Origins, there had been all sorts of inhumanly buff physiques on display in movies for decades; the era of twink tarzans and fat supermans was long over. In particular, to take just one example, as that movie came out people were still talking constantly about a certain years-old other one, a small indie flick called 300. This one, you may have heard, had dozens upon dozens of bodies that (like that of the "Jackman-type" leading man, another handsome, good natured older guy with an accent) actually looked aesthetic and were often more muscular than Jackman's, if a bit less ripped. I think Mr. Jordan just personally liked and respected (and who wouldn't?) Jackman and wanted to pay him tribute.
When I first watched that movie as a kid I thought pre-serum Steve Rogers was the actor’s real physique and the all the rest of the movie was special effects, I was too dumb.
I would also include one of Jean Claude Van Damme’s movies “kickboxer”! Without a question all Rocky - Rambo movie series and Arnie’s Conan and Commando! Lou Ferrigno’s representation of Hercules was culturally epic!! Also Dolph Lundgren’s He-Man was an epic cult portrayal of a super hero!! Honorable mentions: Brad Pitt’s Achilles, Chris Hemsworh’s Thor, Henry Cavill’s Superman 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
In 2016 at 18 years old, that same Batman training scene was the spark that fired up my love for training. Fast forward to '23 and MANY Buffdudes videos later, ya boi standing at 220 strong.
Not a really well known film, but Showdown in Little Tokyo has Dolph Lundgren at his absolutely hugest and most jacked ever. Plus it has Brandon Lee in it too.
Dolph was at his biggest in He-Man and it wasn't even close. (Though leaner in Rocky and pretty impressive there too.) In Little Tokyo he was mostly back to normal. Dolph was my physique inspiration as a little kid. I couldn't believe any man could actually look that beautiful and wanted to grow up to look just like him. Of course at 5'3" and brown colored I seem to have somewhat bungled that aspiration but I like what I ended up getting quite a bit! He doesn't seem very huge to me anymore but his aesthetics are breathtaking for a tall man, who normally don't look anything like that. He has as aesthetic a chest as any man on the Olympia stage has ever had; it is utterly perfect. Stallone worked so hard to look great for Rocky IV; it is a testament to his humility and dedication to his art that he was very excited to have someone distinctly looking even better than him to properly portray the nearly superhuman Drago.
Ryan Reynolds in Blade 3 changed my life. I didn't understand how people became muscular until i saw him transform for Van Wilder to Hannibal King. There was a magazine article on how he trained and behind the scenes stuff on the dvd that opened my eyes. Up to then, i thought people were born muscular, like tall or short. I didn't know what protein was either. I learned so much from his diet and it really set me on my path as a Fitness Instructor and my local leisure centre.
That was big for me too! I enjoyed Ryan Reynold breaking down what he had to do in order to achieve his physique. If I remember right, he broke his diet and workout routine in pretty good detail. -Hudson
He looked so good in that movie and it was a pretty big inspiring moment for me too, although I don't remember seeing his workout info. That Prison Break dude looked pretty good too for that matter iirc.
I really enjoyed this video! I love your choices. Even though there are no sequences of Christopher Reeve training in Superman, it has always inspired me to train hard because he transformed his body to play the role of Superman. I also greatly admire the way that he dealt with his disability after he was paralyzed. I have a disability myself, cerebral palsy, so the idea of Superman has always appealed to me. Thank you so much for continuing to educate, inspire and entertain us with your videos.
As a UK kid growing up in the seventies i agree Christopher Reeve was, and will always be Superman, he was a good man, with morals and empathy for others, i wish he was still around today in this crazy world we live in, there don't seem to be many role models nowadays.
Snatch was right after Fight Club I believe so that maybe why, he just relaxed a bit because he said that Fight Club physique wasn’t really manageable. Personally I think his best physique was in Troy as Achilles
Christian Bale in American Psycho , Equilibrium and Batman Begins was impressive. Taking into account how much weight he lost for The Machinist and a few months later he was Batman .
300 was the movie that got me into fitness so many years ago. The trainer mark twight is an incredible inspiration in his approach to training for purpose. I ended up working as a PT and finished a degree in sport and exercise science and i believe that this movie was the thing that initially inspired me. Watching 300 spartans that lived, ate and breathed training to physical perfection to become the ultimate soldiers was incredible.
Somewhat surprised you guys didn't mention Pain & Gain! Not necessarily an old or classic movie, but definitely involved muscleheads and I personally loved it.
Fun fact (Aside from seeing all those films and a few that weren't covered and loving all of them) : In Predator, Jean Claude Van Damme was initially cast as the Predator before abandoning the role and giving it to Hall. As a final note, Bloodsport was one of my favorite martial arts films, mainly because Van Damme was jacked and that started my fitness journey.
The suit JCVD was wearing for predator looked like Barney the dinosaur, the movie would not have been an all time classic if they went with that. So pleased they changed it, I like JCVD but nothing can beat the way predator looked. One of my favourite films ever.
Bloodsport! That movie got me to the gym so many times. Jean Claude Van Damme always had the best training montages. Loved the Buff Dudes list, seen them all! 💪
The bizarre thing you have to realize about Brad Pitt in Fight Club: He was almost 35 years old. When he had his breakout role in Thelma & Louise he was 27.
You guys put together the perfect list. The entire Rocky series still inspires me to this day. If I am struggling with a workout, I hit the Rocky IV soundtrack to get through it. Works every single time.
Bloodsport and Kickboxer with Jean Claude to me were an inspiration. Personally, I prefer the era where body builders acted rather than today, where actors are built for the movie.
My first real motivation as a kid who got bullied a lot, was Goku from Dragon Ball Z !!! Im 34, and im in the best shape of my life, its been almost 20 years since I started the fitness path! And when I need a little bit of motivation... I come here to watch your greatvideo ! Thanks guys
I've always wanted to be ripped than jacked, that's why it's Brad Pitt's physique in SNATCH for me, more than his in Fight Club (though I'm closer to this one lol). Then you got Ryan Reynolds's physique in Blade Trinity, Scott Adkins' in the Undisputed films, Cam Gigandet's in Never Back Down, and Alexander Skarsgard's in The Legend of Tarzan. Those are my target physiques.
Matthew McConaughey in Two for the Money has been my inspiration. First saw that when I was just getting into exercising and watching him in that movie was amazing.
Although not from a movie Stephen Amell's Green Arrow training montages could also be a good reference/ motivation. Especially every time he does the salmon ladder.
You don't see it much, but Brandon Lee had a good physique in "The Crow", there's some shirtless scenes after he returns from the dead & before he dons the outfit and facepaint. Brandon didn't really show himself off too much. Was re-watching his dad in "The Way Of The Dragon" & there's a scene where he's just stretching and flexing, showing how jacked he really was at the time.
A memorable scene with Steve Reeves in an old 1960's movie 'Morgan the Pirate' always stuck in my mind. The villain challenges Steve Reeves to a sword fight and confidently starts to take his shirt off... to show he means business. As he's doing so he looks over his arms and see's Steve Reeves also taking off his top. When he sees Steve's physique he thinks, nah maybe not.... i think i'll keep my shirt on. 🤣
Hey Dudes! These movies inspired me to become a trainer myself too and i love them all. I would add Bloodsport too to your list cause Van Damme is peak at this movie and also inspired Mortal Kombat!
When I first started working out, my goal was focused on getting Ryan Reynolds' Blade Trinity look and though i never fully achieved it, it made me fall in love with weight lifting and have been going ever since. Now i shoot for the Henry Cavill in Man of Steel look, or Geralt if I'm getting bulkier
7:26 There's something that a lot of people dont understand. When you really look at it, Brad Pitt's fight club body is really just low body fat with some muscle. You could just follow a calisthenics routine and a calorie deficit for a couple years and it'd get you there. The only reason it looks so good and its so iconic, its because that's Brad Pitt, nobody else really can look that good that way
Hercules was the first movie I saw in a theater as a teeny little girl (it was probably the 2nd one Hercules Unchained) and Steve Reeves was my first movie crush. Not only the perfect build, but he also had the most beautiful blue eyes. Thanks for reminding us just how incredible he was.
I remember my grandad showing me Predator when i was 5 because i liked monsters 😂 my mum was NOT happy, but its still my favourite to this day (im 32) and Conan!
One of the Christopher Nolan Batman films showed Bruce Wayne falling to the floor to push-ups. This featured Christian Bale who played Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.
My favorite physique is Henry Cavill in Man of Steel. To me he had the perfect ratio of everything. His chest, arms, deltoids, lats, back, core etc. chefs kiss. Tough I thought he would look better with bigger traps. So when I went on my fitness journey to achieve that physique, that’s what I did, made my traps bigger. I wanted them big and strong like Tom Hardy’s in Warrior. And I did. It took about 10 straight months of pure hard work. Working out 6 days a week, ate and drank the protein I needed, drank plenty of water, got 8 hours of sleep, and no alcohol. And the effort and results was worth it. So to me Henry Cavill will be my favorite on screen Superman of all time. And best on screen physique of all time. Thanks to him, Zack Snyder and Mark Twight/Gym Jones, I got myself out of depression and started a better life. So thanks guys
PItt himself said he went through absolute Hell to get in his Fight Club shape, and wouldn't have been able to do it were it not for his age and his trainers. It's NOT an easily obtainable physique particularly if you're not already skinny to begin with. It's fine to admire these physiques but please understand there are A LOT of dudes with body dysmorphic disorder who are killing themselves trying to obtain that which they physiologically cannot.
There are scenes of batman training in Batman begins. It's not like crossfit/strength training like batman v superman, but he does some calisthenics and other martial arts training. For me, Batman Begins was the movie that inspired me to get into fitness.
I am a fan of Clint Walker. There is a video on UA-cam about his 1960’s workout. Also Clint Eastwood’s early lean physique. But, one of my most favorite physique Arnold’s in Predator.
Such a good list! I grew up watching Predator almost every weekend it felt like at times. 300 came out during my high school years and I think all of us just rushed to the high school weight room after watching that one. And yes I agree, Blade Trinity was a terrible movie, but Ryan Reynolds shirtless on his knees had me doing sit ups every night for like a month lol In case there is a part 2 coming in the future, I'd offer up Terminator. Has a slimmed up but still jacked Schwarzeneggar getting bullets removed from his back or the blue t-shirt while removing the skin from his arm is a classic physique. Also, Charlie Hunnam in Green Street Hooligans was pretty inspiring as well.
Lol The way you guys described first seeing Predator in segments censored on TV is how most of us who grew up then saw it. I remember seeing terminator 2 on TV as a kid and they cut out the scene where he cuts the skin on his arm off in front of Dyson , and it just cut to them having a freaked out reaction to it.. made no sense.
Although not shredded in the vintage uniform. It was the fictional MAN OF STEEL SUPERMAN played by Christopher Reeeves that got me and my peers young in Jamaica to start working out. I literally wanted to be the man of steel. It was a thing then to punch someone in the stomach to see how tough they are. Also the Hulk by Lou Ferrigno'
Great list guys! Only one I’d add(and this just my personal pick) is Chris pratts scene in the first guardians. Not as jacked or huge as a lot of these guys, but you wanna talk about inspiration? Never have I ever been so inspired to go from bigger, bulky and basically chubby lol, to wanting to lean out and actually look good! Which is literally what he did. From chubby Andy on parks and Rec to badass marvel hero. Stay buff 💪🏽
1991 Max Cady in Cape Fear. DeNiro was 48 years old in that role and did his scary transformation without the benefits of 30 years of knowledge we have today.
I love it how you find room for both great movies ("Fight Club", "Predator", "300") and absolute trash ("Blade Trinity", "BvS"). Even mentioned Dragon Ball wich is what inspired me the most in my teenage years 👍
Kinda surprised no Mark Whalberg on this list. I remember him being kind of well known for his bodybuilding back in the 2000s especially. There's that one movie Pain and Gain, with the Rock, where he's literally the manager of a bodybuilding gym
Man love all of these movies and moments y’all chose! It’s like you looked into my childhood and picked almost everything that inspired me to hit the weights. I agree with Hudson, Predator will always be my favorite 🙌🏼 love you guys
Toby Maguire in the first Spiderman film when he wakes up buff. Brandon Lee in The Crow Matthew McConaughey in Reign of Fire Christian Bale in Batman Begins when he gets out of bed and does push-ups after chugging his shake. ...and many more.
There was a book that showed Bruce Lee's workouts called The Art of Expressing the Human Body. I bought it when I was 19. I did karate at the time and bought it to learn how to lift weights to supplement my training.
Nice pick! I thougroughly enjoyed some of those movies! By the way, I saw Clint Walker in Dirty dozen in the initian part, talking about insane genetics!
I was really impressed by the transformation that Christian Bale pulled off between the movies "Equilibrium", where he was quite muscular, "The Machinist", where he resembled a Nazi prison camp victim, and "Batman Begins", where he was absolutely jacked. Yeah, sure, he probably used steroids to gain all of that muscle back so fast, and it sure wasn't a healthy thing to do in general, but it's still an incredible feat, considering the time frame.
Mine was JCVD in Kickboxer, not only was it the physique but the flexibility. I remember as a kid, my life goal was the jumping roundhouse split kick...if I pulled it off my life would be complete 😂
As an Arnold nerd, I have to quickly correct the Predator bit lol. Bill Duke, the guy that "eats green berets for breakfast" - that was actually Arnold's line from Commando, after Bill Duke said "this green beret's gonna kick your big ass" 😂
No Bloodsport? Come on Buff Dudes not only we had Bolo Yeung and his pec bouncing we also had Jean Claude Van Damme showing the biggest performance challenge a man can face...the splits...also THAT soundtrack .
We spaced big-time not including a Van Damme movie. Tried to limit it to 10 and the historical relevance each brought to the table, but you're right. The splits. The soundtrack. The dance scene!! (In Kickboxer)
@@buffdudes Pure 80's corny awesomeness there is another Van Damme film...kinda its called no retreat no surrender where he plays the Villain and the protagonist is trained by Bruce Lee's Ghost/spirit (seriously) the training montage its pretty good as well.
I would add Hugh Jackman in either "X-men origins-Wolverine" or "the Wolverine" - The scene where he emerges from the tank having been injected with adamantium or the final fight scene vs Samurai - when I saw that in Cinema I was like - "this is the absolute peak of perfect bodybuilding". Edit: Or even the scene in "Days of future past" where he wakes up shirtless - My god, that guy will be impossible to replace as Wolverine.
Yes, he was! We included Dirty Dozen on the list but for some reason my editing program was having a hard time processing the clips so we had to cut that portion out of the video.
So true story, since everyone was so jacked in predator they kind of had a rivalry on set. Carl Weathers would wake up like a hour early, go to the gym, get a pump, then go back to his room. Then he would leave when everyone else woke up and be like “hey guys, this is how big I normally am, let’s go to the gym and get a pump”. Arnold at the time also didn’t want to lift with the other actors (I forgot the reason why) so he would get random light guys and cameramen to lift with him. This sounds great until you realize Arnold lifts he’s as shit and was on all kinds of steroids so he would make these small ass guys who probably never went to a gym keep doing reps even when they were past failure. Like he would be spitting them and yelling and not letting them retail the weight lol. These stories were from a Jesse the body Ventura interview if I’m remembering correctly
Big thanks to Avery, Anna and the rest of the Macoproject team for suggesting this video idea! You can check out their film festival at macofilm.org/ and go to their upcoming event this fall in Orlando Florida!
How you not put hugh Jackman as Wolverine? That changed everything!
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. There's even a video where Michael B. Jordan (himself a bona-fide Buff Dude) has talked about how Hugh set the blueprint for superhero physiques in Hollywood
Nope
Hugh should've been renamed as Hugh Jacked-Up cause he was the absolute peak of perfection in the second wolverine film.

I think the critical aspect is superhero films. I remember growing up with Michael Keatons rubber nipples. Batman.
A good one is Captain America: The First Avenger. When they reveal Steve's transformed physique.
That's a good one!
Cap 2 where Chris Evans bicep curls a flying helicopter.

Fantastic list ! For me it was the Jean Claude Vandamme movies at first and then Fight Club, Troy and 300.
Stallone's physique in RAMBO 3 is a must mention here....😎
As someone who just binged 5 Rocky movies and dont know what to do with myself anymore, this video dropped at the perfect time
Have a favorite?
@@ct6852 not to be basic, but 1
@@Quode001 Classic. That was the big one as far as Oscars.
Might as well have played the Rocky 4 soundtrack to the Bruce training montage.
A mention would have been Alan ritchson from the jack reacher series who’s also in fast x
When I saw Rocky training on old equipment while the Russian dude was getting shots, I guffawed. Like Stallone didn't get shots for that film.
Finally new video , protect Duke for me he is a real treasure
If testosterone were a movie, the original Predator would be it. One of my top 5 favorite films of all time.
American history X. The body of Edward Norton was insane!!!
I can’t believe you did not mention Never back down, the original of course, that was pure motivation in my high school era.
1991 Max Cady in Cape Fear. DeNiro was 48 years old in that role and did his scary transformation without the benefits of 30 years of knowledge we have today.
I think Ryan Reynolds was more jacked in the remake of Amityville Horror.
I love it how you find room for both great movies ("Fight Club", "Predator", "300") and absolute trash ("Blade Trinity", "BvS"). Even mentioned Dragon Ball wich is what inspired me the most in my teenage years 👍
How about Michael Jai White in Blood And Bone? A bit of an obscure movie, but the guy's jacked to the max in it.
Tom Hardy in Warrior is also great example, got buff and learned the moves
Kinda surprised no Mark Whalberg on this list. I remember him being kind of well known for his bodybuilding back in the 2000s especially. There's that one movie Pain and Gain, with the Rock, where he's literally the manager of a bodybuilding gym
They did a video about that

And we’re gonna “pump your up.”!
Brandon Lee in The Crow
Matthew McConaughey in Reign of Fire
Christian Bale in Batman Begins when he gets out of bed and does push-ups after chugging his shake.
...and many more.
I have watched most of the movies in the list but the impact that Ben Affleck's batman body had on me is not even comparable
There was a book that showed Bruce Lee's workouts called The Art of Expressing the Human Body. I bought it when I was 19. I did karate at the time and bought it to learn how to lift weights to supplement my training.
They're hella obscure but Scott Adkins in the Undisputed movies was has jaw dropping
Hugh Jackman Wolverine, Tobie Maguire Spider-Man body, Chris Evans Captain America transformation. A lot of good ones that stick in my head
Also Henry Cavill in Superman - shirtless in fisherman’s village.
I lost it at the "Alien Sylvester Stallone" bit haha 😂😂
Nice pick! I thougroughly enjoyed some of those movies!
By the way, I saw Clint Walker in Dirty dozen in the initian part, talking about insane genetics!
We want more funny buff dude reviews😂😂
I used to think Liu Kang in the first Mortal Kombat movie was super buff back in the day haha
That's a great one! That soundtrack is one of the all time best too
I was really impressed by the transformation that Christian Bale pulled off between the movies "Equilibrium", where he was quite muscular, "The Machinist", where he resembled a Nazi prison camp victim, and "Batman Begins", where he was absolutely jacked. Yeah, sure, he probably used steroids to gain all of that muscle back so fast, and it sure wasn't a healthy thing to do in general, but it's still an incredible feat, considering the time frame.
Good choices! Although, personally, I model my physique after Johnny Bravo. Who needs legs, right?
They should make a new predator with the Rock, Hemsworth, John Cena maybe a small part for Couture along with other contemporary buff dudes.
Mine was JCVD in Kickboxer, not only was it the physique but the flexibility. I remember as a kid, my life goal was the jumping roundhouse split kick...if I pulled it off my life would be complete 😂
Omg.. I used to do the same I'm glad I wasn't the only one 😂😂😂, bloodsport was amazing too
The buff dudes still going strong, you love to see it!
I really like these guys. My buddy lives in bend oregon, I’ll visit him soon and I hope I’ll see buddy dudes around there
As an Arnold nerd, I have to quickly correct the Predator bit lol.
Don't know how you missed off Hugh Jackman as Wolverine !!!
Tom Hardy in Warrior. That's what got me into weightlifting and still motivates me to this day
I would add Hugh Jackman in either "X-men origins-Wolverine" or "the Wolverine" - The scene where he emerges from the tank having been injected with adamantium or the final fight scene vs Samurai - when I saw that in Cinema I was like - "this is the absolute peak of perfect bodybuilding".
Edit: Or even the scene in "Days of future past" where he wakes up shirtless - My god, that guy will be impossible to replace as Wolverine.
Oh man, yeah, especially the Days of Future Past scene!
The Wolverine and DoFP are peak Wolverine. Amazing!
I saw Clint Walker in the begining of your vid! He was very cool!💪👊
