I´m an Icelander, spent the whole summer of '66 in London whit a good friend Gunnar Jokull the drummer of Chris's band The Syn. I was with them when they were checked into the Marque Club and I don't have to tell about the outcome . I remember Chris as a great base player and he took good care of Gunnar who was only 16 years old then. Chris was funny, called me "Maggi the pipe" (I smoked a pipe only tobacco) miss him,as a great musician who was the soul of the bands he was in, as a person and a good caretaker of his friends.Gunnar passed away in 2001 and I hope Chris has met his favorite drummer in heaven. I'm 75 now, when I pass away I'm looking forward to meet them and enjoy their music .

Your comments were jaw-dropping. I'm very impressed w that encounter. Godspeed young man! What a loss to Jeff Beck a few weeks ago. Steve Howe is the last on left from my era. I remember the day Christ Squire died. All these event have hit me to the core and certainly to our own mortality. I try to share YES music w anyone that will listen.

Chris Squire is great, one of his kind!
The first two names you have cited are my favorite bassists (also Geezer Butler) since when I started with bass back in the 80s, and they have had the biggest influence on my playing.
Another two that have been very influenced by Chris are Jon Camp of Renaissance and Graeme Murray of Pallas. Both have said that seeing him playing live has literally been some kind of Revelation!
      Greetings from Italy!

I was born in 2001 and I cant help but feel like the 2010s have been a less exciting time to grow up. Sure we grew up in the technological revolution, but the music fucking sucks, everything is so restricted, and the planet is melting down. I wish I was born in 59 so I could grow up in the 70s with Yes and Zeppelin

Chris's death really did a number on me. I'm 63 and starting to feel my own mortality. That being said, I'm beyond saddened by his death :( He was one of my favorite bass players of all time besides Jaco Pastorius, Jack Bruce, Louis Johnson, James Jamerson who are gone now as well. When was Tales? 73? 74?
Chris Squire was THE driving force that made me want to be a bass player.
I️ am also smart enough AND have seen Yes enough to recognize some of his shortcomings as the ‘quintessential’ bass soloist - but remember, he was the first to replace Paul McCartney as bassist of the year - he created incredibly technical bass passages (see Sound Chaser), he gave so many bassists the truth that you are allowed to do more that play boring riffs, etc. He demonstrated that bassists can 1) play the pocket or 2) create incredible riffs outside of the bottom and 3) go fucking batshit and make everyone’s jaws drop back in the 70’s and 80’s.
Can you play Tempus Fugit AND sing harmonies at the same time?
      I️ can’t.

  • @ExtremelyOCD

    Chris Squire
    John Entwistle
Neither of those two can be replaced, it's not the Who without John, and not Yes without Chris. They were both way too much an integral part of the sound, can't be replaced.
I'm also a big time Jam band fan.
    Phil Lesh, remarkable,
Jack Cassidy, another one. Both of these guys ignored what a bass player was supposed to do, and basically co-invented a new approach to the bass. While they were doing their thing I San Fran, Squire and Entwistle were doing the same (with their own unique ways and sounds), in the UK.
There's a few others, but those four to me, are the greatest bassists ever, influencing so many people. Who's the best? Can't pick one, three different types of music, can't honestly say there's one that's the "Greatest", so not only one of the greatest of all time (top 5 for me), the greatest Progressive rock bassist without question,

@@mrmott44 I think that's more you saying so on their behalf. I'd like to see those still alive try and learn The Gates of Delirium.
Chris Squire could play in any of the bands those bass players belonged to.
Most of those bass players could not play Yes music. But you can hear the influence Chris had on Geddy. All you have to do is listen to the first 5 Yes albums, and you have what Geddy's been doing for a long time. And he does it great. But he's not Chris Squire, and nor has Rush music demanded so much from their bass player. Rush never were Close to the Edge or Topographic Oceans. They've never played music like that. Nor have Entwistle, McCartney or the others you mentioned. None of them ever had to play Close to the Edge. Or anything like "Fish Out of Water."
So I'm sure they all appreciate you speaking for them. But the tale of the tape says, Chris Squire could play in the Who, The Beatles, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, and the Grateful Dead.
They may not be able to join Yes. Entwistle never played anything like that, nor did McCartney. Bruce, Casady or Lesh, lot of rhythm & blues based playing.
      Squire was more than that.

I still can't believe he's gone. Funny how you think your rock and roll gods will live forever. I guess in a way they do.
Been listening to "Fish Out of Water" again lately in the car (won't listen to Safe (Canon Song) though, I only listen to that in the dark, alone with my eyes closed and just let it wash all over me like a Yosemite waterfall. Can we all agree that there never has been a greater musical argument for the electric bass guitar as a lead instrument? And so well recorded. And such great songwriting and arranging. And playing. And singing. Oh my.
This is what I will always take with me from Chris.

Fish Out Of Water is a stunning album; easily up the with The Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge. Perfect timeless production, tasteful orchestration and a dreamlike quality to the songs, especially Silently Falling and Safe (Canon Song) that takes your mind on a journey far far away from wherever you started.
There are/were other great bass players out there, but I cannot think of anyone that could have matched the compositional skills AND the overall performance found on this record.

      Michael Moskowy
I just listened to both pieces on Topographic Oceans. Those accents I referred to at 3:14 are taken from The Ancient, no question. There are some stops going into the percussion part at the end of the bass solo but are completely different from the octave accents at 3:14. It was probably their way of paying homage or referring to The Ancient without having to play the entire piece. Believe me I know. Not only did I cut my teeth learning to play bass from this album it was my first concert. I saw this tour in 1973 at the Boston Garden. I bought the album the week it was released. It was part of the soundtrack of my teen-aged years.

The best a band can hope for is to TAKE FLIGHT! Yes did this, so did Genesis and many others. But not all.

We would play Relayer and Yesshows at least 2 a day back then, and w/ my brother's stereo and 5 way floor standing Ohm speakers the mix was as good as being them playing right in the room.
