What is the move when you draw a skirmish card? I started with the original Battle Cry game from Milton Bradley in the 1960s. It was part of their American Heritage Series of war board games which included: Battle Cry, Dogfight, Hit the Beach, and Broadside. Later, Hit the Beach was dropped and Skirmish was added to the set. Dogfight was my favorite.
hopefully you guys did the original Battlelore also... that's another really early C&C. I have only played the basic version of Battlelore which is a good C&C game with historical medieval scenarios and miniatures similar to battle cry. Then there is the advanced game which is C&C fantasy
As the great Hal Richman, creator of 1960s sports game company Strat-O-Matic, once replied: A game has to have playability or it's not going to get played very often.
Hey guys... the game is older than 20 years ... I have the Milton Bradley version from back in the 1960's, what an evolution! I also have the original FF version, which had small changes (the artillery, Infantry)... what I love about the game is that you can make your own scenarios... I bought two versions of the first and second editions... WONDERFUL GAME.... so glad you guys got to play it
I remember when I was about 13yo in the early 70s just starting wargameing, and thinking how the cardboard counters were 'cheap' and wouldnt it be cool if there were plastic figures instead. I got over that pretty fast. The competition was a sand box, a bag of green plastic army men, a BB gun, and a bottle of lighter fluid. I still paint miniatures, so I guess I'm still playing with toy soldiers.
Bought the 150th anniversary edition ,brand new, and love it. Have all the Commands and Colours ancients games, low complexity easy to teach and brilliant for someone who is new to board wargaming! Newbies get so turned off by having to check charts, modifiers etc. Personally I prefer chits and a more in depth game, but that's just me.
Thanks for doing this series guys. Commands and Colors is by far my favorite game family; been playing these since 2007. While Battle Cry is arguably my least favorite iteration, I still appreciate coming back to this one now and again.
Guys, better read the rules again. I have the 150th anniversary edition and the rules say you eliminate 1 figure for each flag rolled where you cannot retreat. Your artillery unit would not be eliminated in your example. It would lose 1 figure and still have 1 left because it was able to retreat one space but not the second space resulting in the lose of only 1 figure. I think all command and colors games have this same rule.
Although later iterations of the system have surpassed Battle Cry in many ways (in my opinion)...have to respect the fact that this was the one that introduced us all to this great, great game system. To this day, a few times a year I will get this one on the table & enjoy it’s simplicity & the basic core of the whole thing. I picked up the 125th anniversary edition several years back & do prefer it. The C&C Ranking video must be coming soon! Side note...I grew up with Kroger in NW Ohio! Through all my travels I still find it to be my favorite grocery store chain! 😜lol! Another great video guys...
The game system is brilliant. If you want more historical realism, you should consider something else. Greater historical realism = greater complexity. Greater playability = less complexity. The great thing about this game is that it is so dynamic. Your situation can change quickly.
I better grab a copy in case the SJW (aka Red brigade) decide to push for a ban on civil war themed games. I look forward to your future comparison series. I see you have London's Burning on the shelf. Any chance of a review on it dealing with both 2 player and solo modes?

Sorry - nothing to do with this game - but the title. This series of games, along with the early AH Gettysburg, started a lifelong interest in war games. When I was young, we had a Battle Cry game from 1961 - part of an American Heritage series of games by Milton Bradley: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2428/battle-cry In the series, there was Hit the Beach (WW II Pacific)! Dogfight (WW I aerial combat, Broadside (Am Revolution naval) and maybe one other that I am forgetting.... Great fun for a little guy....
I had all of those too! Wasn't Broadside the war of 1812? I remember you had to run forts and you removed sails for hits. The Civil War game you lined up like leap frog. Fun times!
I know what Kroger's is! Lol 😄 I remember getting this game back in 2000 when it came out. First war game I played with my kids, great game. It was an introductory level game, kinda like how people rant and rave over Undaunted Normandy now days. Great beer and pretzels game! 🍻 I found I liked the redesign of this game even better, the 150th annivery edition.
I play in the BC tournament at every PREZCON and always have a blast. I have alot of respect for this game. Not because it's the most refined game in the series - it's not by far - but because it began the series and set the base design elements that have served the whole series so well. If I have a regret, it is that Hasbro will never "set it free" so that it can be redeveloped.
Loved it. I recall playing numerous battles, in a row, over beers with a buddy back in early 2k's. Plays so quick and easy, but still lots of fun. Always thought it a great introduction for those who don't wargame at all.
Pros - TPA goes old school. Cons - its a plastic toy soldier “play it in 2 hours” beer and combos festival (doesn’t even deserve the use of “pretzels”). 😎

This looks sick! I hope they repress it.
Hasbro did reprint it with new components but now its OOP again
You are very welcome!

The Milton Bradley Battle Cry is not at all the same game. Same title, yes. It's also about the Civil War. That's as far as the similarities go.
You keep saying what great value this game is. The cheapest one I could find on eBay is a used one for $66.00 + $20 shipping!!!
Well, patience is a virtue, I've seen them on BGG and eBay for $40 in the past.
Looking forward to the ranking video.
Pro Tip:
If you make a game with stickers, make sure they actually, you know, stick.
@roofus 91 Yes, you are right! A real gamer would, indeed, paint their minis! tee hee
Im 74, and me and my brother played Battle Cry in the mid/late 50s

The original 2000 version had the whole unit eliminated if it could not legally retreat.

Eventually we'll review it. I've looked over the rules briefly. It'll probably be more focused on the solo, just from a time stand point.
No one's coming for your civil war games dude...

You got to do the AH civil war board game from the mid 80s
Grant is sat right infront of it. One day.
Finally a game I understand 😁! Theres a new game with some changes and better rulebook
I like original way better than the 150th version

Wrong!!!!!! This is one of the Milton Bradley American Heritage Games from the 60s. You are playing a reissue. I have 3 of the four originals.
