During the second half of 1992, I took a break from my insurance career and worked for a struggling radio station in Topeka, Kansas. One day that Fall, several members of Kansas came into the station for an interview, before their concert that night. We all got several free tickets apiece for the show, so I invited several friends and we had a blast! I was amazed at Steve's energy and how he would jump up and play the keyboard while he was balancing himself upside down! Love their music. Takes me back to high school, college and on into the '80s. Amazing songs filled with great memories!!!
As a lifelong Kansas fan, this was a little hard to watch. Steve, obviously struggling with demons, gutted it out. Thankfully he is clean and hopefully enjoying retirement. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his amazing talent and energy that provided us with some of the most amazing and influential music ever recorded. Today's version of Kansas is a tight, efficient unit that is always musically spot on and never has an off night. Can't wait to see them in May and again in August.
We opened for them (Mara from Cincinnati) this same year during their club gigs. He wasn't very good that night either in Newport, KY. We actually blew them off the stage during our 45 minute opener and Steve even complimented us on helping carry the show for them.
As a soul that lived through this time, I know the things that were present and the pitfalls that consumed so many wonderful people. I, too, imbibed these drugs but fortunately, I was able to sidestep all the awful things that befell so many. It was a heady time. I enjoyed my drugs. Cocaine was lotsa fun. It was also hell for many people that couldn't handle it. I lost a lot of friends to it. I was able to walk away unscathed for the most part, but so many were not able to. I feel for them. Especially the musicians. Too much money and not enough sense to keep their heads. I can't help but forgive them. If not for the love of a good woman, I too might have succumbed. Have some compassion if you weren't there. We are all human... Kansas is and was always one of my favorite bands, and Steve was amazing despite his issues. We are all blessed for his presence.. If you don't think so...well, that's your right. But you might be wrong. Love you Kansas!
Beautiful story Ran... I share much of it... Except for the good women part or should I say good man part. I unfortunately didn't find that kind of love that many were blessed with. So happy that your life has a silver lining.
A great voice, but sadly ravaged by a steady flow of chemicals, time, and life on the road. I was one of the 2 Tour Managers for Kansas from 1989-1999 along with Buck Holmes (and won't mention which one), and was running with the Band during this show and this tour. Steve actually was a Health Nut for 2 years before this and I woke him up at 7 am each day and he worked out most mornings. You can see here, he was skinny, but pretty ripped. He got into the coke heavily and was hard to manage. I used to find him sleeping in the closet of our tour bus. I'd load him up on a luggage cart (we took from The Marriott Hotel in Texas) and I'd wheel him through the Hotel, up the elevator, to his room. I put a tarp over the cart so nobody knew he was under there, but he would be blurt out things and screamed crazy things from under the tarp. I would get stares, but it was usually 2 am in the morning. He started getting crazy and wouldn't listen to reason toward the end of the Tour. The Jean Jacket he wore on stage in this video he would wear all the time, with a pair of white running shorts and an Indian Feathered Head Dress and would run around the parking lot. The hotel we stayed at cleaned his jean jacket that he's wearing in this video, and apparently left it in the dryer way too long. It was delivered to his room and it had shrunk to 1/2 it's original size! It used to hang down to the top of his jeans, but look at it HERE, it barely fit! I told him NOT to wear it, but he wouldn't listen to me and after a bottle of Jack and a 1/2 gram of coke, he snuck out on stage blown out of his mind, wearing the Jean Jacket the Hotel left in the Dryer too long, and consequently shrunk TWO Sizes Too Small! That's why I always Laugh when I see this video! Great Guy Steve was and we had an Absolute Blast, it was a magical time I will always cherish! But I wish I could have kept the group going for longer. Whenever he would look at me and say, "I want to Kiss the White Capped Mountain Tops Pappy", that was CODE for I better have some fresh "Powder" ready to go in the dressing room. Steve gave me that Jean Jacket at the end of the tour, and when I had my first son, he would run around the house at age 5, wearing Steve's Famous Jean Jacket. It always put a Smile on my Face!
Texas Axe Slinger Wow.... cool story. Hey do you remember playing at the Ona Speedway in WV??? Me and a good friend went and saw them there about 92 ish I think. I’m not sure Phil was on drums that night. Just wondering if you remember that show or if you could tell me anything about it.
Texas Axe Slinger How and why did the other guys put up with it? In all honesty, his voice is so terrible here, which is a travesty because his energy and stage presence are fantastic. I saw this tour in Guelph ON. They played in a bar that had less room than they had here. Steve did many handstands that night. He obviously cleaned up since those days. His voice was much better in the 2009 show at Washburn U.
Hey Tex, I saw the band in Canada in late 1993 and Van Romaine was on drums....he did a decent job but I remember wondering why tf Phil wasnt playing. do you remember the reason why the band brought Van in to play? I think he did a run of shows with them if I remember correctly.
I am so glad to have had the chance to see Kansas in their original (after being a national/international band) lineup and followed thru all the changes over the years, danged I am old, decades. 10 or so years into him being in his career I always thought of Billy Greer as the newbie. But, Kansas had always kept their level of professionalism and commitment to providing music to their audience in an exceptional way. I even introduced my kids to Kansas, but you never know what they like in the end. Kansas is playing a BIG part in the Soundtrack of my life; my kids have to find their own. I am shaking my head about many of my parents' favorite music - but in the end it does not matter. "To each their own" applied for music to. I will just always love Kansas music and lyrics over the decades. Keep on rocking!!!!!
Saw them 4 times, Point of no return tour, the Elefante in 83 tour both in big arenas then, twice in casino tents. 12 years old first time then married to second wife for the last in 98
Got to see them play 2 shows in a row (in one night) just 5 months before this show, in San Diego. Great shows, both of them. Phil Ehart's mother was there, and she was just as nice as you'd expect. My buddy asked her for her autograph, and I think she liked that.
@@dibber43 Says the uneducated, opinionated projectionist. For YOUR "education", COMPARE this 1980 performance with 1992: ua-cam.com/video/K0GZpH1PK6I/v-deo.html This was Walsh at the peak of his career, and the beginning of his decline from coke and booze that destroyed his voice and his performance in less than 12 years.
I was given a Kansas album by my relatives who actually live in Kansas for my 15th Birthday. It was the Song For America album (with the Bird of Prey Claws on the cover!). Ever since, I have been hooked. Song for America brings tears to my eyes, especially these days... Stay Safe, everybody...
I saw this promo-ish tour at a large patio stage, outdoor bar and grill joint in Htown. Really rocking and was nice to witness most of the original band together.
Love Kansas! Love their music. I knew Greg Roberts and his family down in Georgia. He got into real estate and sold my house for me after he left the band, and we became good friends with his family. His children came to my house and played with my children, his son was in the same class as my daughter and his daughter was in the same class as my son. He was a really nice guy. But I've lost touch with them over the years and I also moved to another state. I wish him and his family well.
Saw them live for this tour. The band was super tight and they played their asses off. Steve Walsh struggled mightily with the vocals but he had a ton of energy and had great stage presence. It was sad to hear his voice so badly damaged. Was very fortunate to see them open for Bad Company in 1976, just months before Left Overture was released. It was a mind blowing performance and have been a fan since that day. The set list was Song for America, Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel, Down the Road, Belexes, Drum Solo, Guitar Solo, Child of Innocence, Bringing it Back and Can I Tell You.
I agree with your reference to Steve Walsh's voice... He's my favorite vocalist, period! If you love KANSAS and Steve Walsh the way I do, you should buy these three albums (if you don't already have them): Steve Walsh - GLOSSOLALIA, Steve Walsh - SHADOWMAN (the best solo album by any KANSAS member!), Steve Walsh - BLACK BUTTERFLY. Another band you should check out is an amazing KANSAS sound-alike band called PINNACLE POINT. Their debut album is called Winds Of Change, and their second album is called Symphony Of Mind, which is so good and it scratches that KANSAS itch so we'll... I just bought the new KANSAS album called Absence of Presence, at the same time I bought the new PINNACLE POINT album called Symphony Of Mind, and I've got to say I find myself listening to Symphony Of Mind more than the KANSAS album... It has the older sounding Kansas vibe to it... I really love both albums, and if you love this kind of music, support those bands... BUY THEIR ALBUMS! No one can your right now due to covid-19, so help these bands stay together by purchasing CD's/Vinyl/whatever... These album sales are THE ONLY WAY these bands can generate income... So go on Amazon or wherever you buy music, and buy everything you can that actually interests you... Those bands will be grateful! Again, now that Steve Walsh has retired from KANSAS and their new vocalist is but a pale shadow of Steve, really check out PINNACLE POINT's debut "Winds Of Change" and new release "SYMPHONY OF MIND", their vocalist, Jerome Mazza sounds shockingly like Steve Walsh, plus he's the guy that made the solo Steve Walsh album BLACK BUTTERFLY, with Steve... Jerome Mazza
For all you genius critics who are saying Steve Walsh’s voice is shot or blown out by too much blow should listen to his voice on his newest (2018) solo album “Black Butterfly” or his recent collaboration with Jerome Mazza. I think he needed a rest. These guys played a dance at my high school in 1972 Steve deserves a break.
I agree. I was shocked BB was as good as it was, I wasn't expecting much to be honest. I'd even say Black Butterfly is the best album by any Kansas member or even the group since Freaks of Nature. There's 5 or 6 songs that are heads and tails better than anything on Prelude Implicit. Part of me wonders if he did the album out of some competitive drive to see if he could do it or not. Mind you he only wrote the lyrics but still...for me Billy Carborne Is Dead is the best solo song he's ever done.
Where was Robby during this concert, just not the same without him especially during Miracles out of Nowhere Never mind just looked it up and he was heading up his own band at the time which I didn't know he did.
I don't know what you're listening, but the band here is kicking ass! And ok, Steve Walsh is struggling at times. If I had a dime for a singer that is struggling live... Ok he's high, but I don't know many drunken people do the athletics he does at the beginning of" Carry on my wayward son".
That violin/guitar solo that Rags plays at 55:25 is just amazing. It shows just how good of a musician he really is. And until lately, he didn't even play much guitar in the band. He's got his own album out, too. Check it out. It's great. He's not just a violin player, folks.
@JustinOldmusician I know, when I saw him with that guitar and heard what was coming out of it, it was like "Dang!! Listen at Rags play that guitar!!" I really enjoyed that!
Phil is such a great drummer! Some of the progressive time signatures and fills are amazing! Steve Walsh is one of my favorite vocalists. Rich is an iconic guitar player!
@mojorisen74 Billy has also retired, and Phil is now managing. With Billy, Rags, and Phil no longer performing, sadly it is now just the Rich Williams Kansas tribute band. Ronnie still brings alot of energy and is a great vocalist. Rich is still a master of his craft but I think I have seen my last Kansas show. Thank you to all the band members past, and present, for a lifetime of iconic music.
@@mike840621 Thanks for the update! I'm thankful I got to see the original 6 back in their heyday (I know I saw the Audio Visions tour, maybe another), plus I saw the "Power" lineup with Steve Morse, which was pretty cool.
Wow texas axe slinger now i know why when i saw Kansas about 1979 80 ish i could not believe the energy Steve displayed on stage. He did a hand stand on the keys i mean completly vertical i was blown away i had never seen a band so Tight and Musical in my life. I will never forget how amazing They were. Snow or not these Men could not be touched by Anyone except for Rush but thats comparing apples and oranges. The most talented Musicians i ever witnessed.
thats nothin. in the earlier days Steves handstands were done without the suport of forhead on towel. just hands on the keys and he actually was holding a chord!
Saw Kansas in this era. Great show. Steve is a showman extreme. Glad some of his band mates stuck with him through his difficulties. Performers are good people in my book.
I remember driving with some friends past the Whisky on the night this was filmed (almost exactly 30 years ago to the day as I write this), seeing the line outside , and debating whether or not to go get a ticket. I decided against it, so I'm grateful it was filmed. Still it would have been a memorable show to see in person, to say the least.
Wow amazing. Around this time I saw them and Steve was jumping all over everything i couldn't believe what I saw I was like if an old guy like that (maybe 10 or so over me) could jump and dance , love this as much as he did I could love it 10x or more so time more!!! Great band great shows!
I saw this tour, in '92, I had to see them. Finally! One of my top 10 vocalists ever, and I'm gonna get to see them! They were playing in Glendale, AZ and I was so stoked. Trivial note: I never knew Williams is about 11 foot 9 inches. The band played great but ....Steve was off, and it seemed that on a couple of occasions band members were having a quick convo with him to take it down a notch. But I'm glad I got to see them. I loved Kansas, and Steve's still in my top 10.
During the era when Steve was struggling, his voice was shot. I saw them in a small bar in a suburban strip mall around this time. I had kind of lost track of Kansas in the mid 80s with the band changes, it was confusing and I wasn't too crazy about the albums coming out. So I went more out of curiosity. About 500 people at most packed into this bar. I couldn't believe they were playing at this place. The last times I had seen them in the late 70s (Point and Monolith) and early 80s (Audiovisions) they were selling out college campus arenas and 18,000 seat hockey arenas. Then this strip mall bar. It surely had to be one of Kansas' low points.
It was, according to some article I read about Steve a while back. And he did admit he was doing too much coke. He just couldn't sing here The 2002 Atlanta show was better, but still had a few issues. The Topeka show was better still . But he never quite had the same voice he once did. I read that the singer for Dream Theater,.James Labrie had screwed up his voice bad after a case of food poisoning and said it took several years to get it back
I saw Kansas three times in 1992-93 playing small clubs/bars. It was almost sad to see them sink to that level, but similarly unbelievable to pay a $20 cover to be 5 feet from the stage with drinks in both hands seeing my favorite band. 30 years later (9/17/22) I paid $125 for 4th row to see them in a 2,500 seat mostly full theater and they were amazing. Ronnie does Steve's vocals proud and hits all the notes. So happy for their success and enduring popularity after all these years.
I also saw them in a suburban strip mall bar where there couldn't have been more than 500 people. I couldn't believe it. I was equally repulsed but fascinated. Steve's voice was shot. I didn't know of the band lineup changes since the last time I had seen them live was the Audiovisions tour. I thought I was witnessing the last gasp of a once great band. But, over the years I stuck with them, seeing them at county and State fairs, a Ribfest for free where they played The Pinnacle when Steinhardt was back, and various other odd and small venues. Now I'm glad I went to this small bar show but at the time, sheeesh.....
i remember seeing Aerosmith in 1983 and the whole band was so high they couldn't stand up. Twice I saw Ozzy Osbourne so screwed up he couldn't remember the words to his songs. I went to the US Festival in 1983 and saw a drunk David Lee Roth get so wasted he forgot the words to his songs and could hardly stand up, but the fans loved that show especially when he bashed The Clash. I saw Eric Moore of The Godz pop a couple of Quaaludes one night and they had to carry him off stage. I could list many more. Then there was Jim Morrison who would get so drunk that he once passed out before the show even started and Ray M had to sing for The Doors. Keith Moon took so much animal tranquilizer at The Cow Palace one night that they had to carry him off-stage and recruit a fan out of the audience to play drums for the rest of the show. Practically, all the great rock n' rollers have embarrassed themselves one time or another so why do Kansas fans want to harp about this particular show all the time and demonize Steve Walsh for snorting cocaine and having an off night. At least Steve could remember the words and do hand stands on his keyboards. Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that cocaine alone killed Steve's voice. Most of the rock stars of the 70's and 80's abused cocaine and some of them still sound remarkably well ie Don Henley and Tommy Shaw to name a couple. I'm just glad that Kansas had a Steve Walsh. If it wasn't for Steve's wonderful voice, most of us probably would have never heard of Kansas.
It wasn't just the cocaine, Steve said he smoked cigarettes and pot on top of the cocaine and drank a lot as well. During the mid 90's Steve was so out of control he could have died. He was drinking so much before and after shows he started taking other drugs to equalize effect of the alcohol. He would literally pass out after a show from drinking/drugging so much then the next day wake up drink/drug some more and go on stage. If it wouldn't have been for Phil Ehart and nearly going to prison Steve may not be here today.
I only wish there was some existing live footage of the shows where Kerry used to pour a pitcher of beer on his head. I bet some of you guys would commit suicide if you saw that.
@@mojorisen74 As far as substance abuse goes, Steve was just your typical rock star from the 70's and 80's, yet you want to ridicule Steve as if he was some kind of exception. Dave Hope had a $40,000 a year coke habit in the 70's and he drank and smoked like crazy. Don Henley & the rest of the Eagles have snorted more coke than Steve could ever afford yet it didn't ruin their voices. 99% of the other bands and singers that did drugs drank liquor and smoked cigarettes, too! Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue was a heroin addict and he actually died a couple of times only to be brought back to life. Once he was left to die in a dumpster. I'm just thankful that Steve stuck with coke and never had a heroin problem, unlike thousands of other rock musicians (Joe Perry, Steve Tyler, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Richard Wright, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Axl Rose, etc.. IMO, Kansas would have never made it without Steve and we should be thankful for that! Lets the man live his life and thank him for the wonderful music that he produced throughout the years.
I'm just going by what Steve said. He said drug and alcohol excess killed his voice. It's different for everyone. Whitney Houston had the same vocal issues Steve had because of her excessive drug abuse only problem is she didnt stop and Steve did.
@@edcollins9377 you are so correct! Let Steve move on. Thank God he is alive and found the strength to get off the drugs and whatever else. He is still singing and he still has it. It is tough for him with the high notes. BLESS you. Steve.
Steve Walsh has ALWAYS been in great physical shape but something was a little "off". He looked like he didn't feel good. I'll always love him no matter what. One of my favorite vocalists of all time. Kansas! 💙💙💙
Thats what i never understood. He took good care of himself as far as athleticism was concerned but destroyed himself with drugs and alcohol. He was very close to dying in the mid 90's. Thankfully Phil Ehart helped him get the help he needed to kick all of it.
I remember when "Whiskey" came out, the rumor was that Steve was sick and had a temp of 102 deg. However, after Steve admitted that he did a bit too much coke during that show, nobody talks about him being sick anymore (if he ever was sick).
Steve's high energy level def makes up for the vocal issues and I agree with you about this one being outstanding. Steve puts his heart into every performance... I watched a full concert of the Freaks of Nature tour and was literally blown away, and that was 3 years after this one. As far as I'm concerned Steve's work is never disappointing. Go Steve - you rock!!
I like that, but as is very common, the energy that coke or other can give a tired touring performer's routine can very often mess with the voice, sometimes you just can't have and give it all. I hope I'm wrong, but in this case, what's preferable...
Barn Hill Arena, Fayetteville Arkansas 1981 Loverboy opened up, putting on a hell of an act, at one point the whole crowd was standing on their feet.. then.. Kansas, wow. hands down one of the best rock and roll shows I've been to in my LifeSteve Walsh was doing handstands on his keyboard throwing sweat from his head in huge sprays, I'll never forget.. long live them boys called Kansas! They did that name proud.
I saw Kansas many times from The Leftoverture album forward, right up to 2017 after Steve's departure, when the band toured with Styx. The last time I saw them with w Steve, I left depressed at how horrible his voice had become. Steve is my favorite Classic Rock vocalist, his voice was beautiful. Hope he's loving retirement. Carry on.
Steve Walsh even though here doesn't sing at His standards, but still he sings Great.....no matter what, when you have a Huge Talent as he has, it comes through even in the worst case scenario. God bless Him, .....what a Singer anyways. C.A.😀😀😀👍👍👍
I've been lucky enough to see these guys a few times back in the day. Once with the original Leftoverature line up. Then in the early 90's. While the bamd kicked ass, Steve was definitely struggling. We saw them at the Grizzly Rose in Denver around that time. I wasn;t sure if Steve was going to make it through the show. I don't wan't to rip on him. I still think he is one of the greatest vocalist in one of the greatest bands ever. They're in my top five of favorite bands. I saw them many years later in my home town of Cheyenne, WY. They drew a huge crowd as it was Frontier Days. Steve was very subdued and just stayed back at his keyboeards for the most part. They were on it and so was Steve. He sounded great. It was the last time I saw them with Steve and Robbie. It was a great show. I wiah all of them the best. They were one of the greatest influences on me as a musician along with Rush, Jethro Tull, and many others progressive bands. No matter what you think of the R&R hall of fame, they should be in it. If you haven't seen their 2002 Live Atlanta Show, watch it. It is fantastic. ua-cam.com/video/PdFNWcXg-t8/v-deo.html
I was there, front row to the left in the purple shirt. Me and my buddy Casey, seen during the ending of The Wall, had a great time. I caught Steve when he fell backward into the crowd and pushed him back onto the stage. There is nothing like seeing your favorite band in the front row, rocking with them all night long! We even met Kerry and hung out with him a bit after the show. A night I'll always remember!
@kbrewski1 If you are referring to Steve's vocals as cringe worthy, he thought so too. For the official release of this performance, Steve went back into the studio and re-recorded all of his vocals! This "Director's Cut" performance just appears here on UA-cam and was never officially released.
@smaddox-no9br I didn't know that he re-recorded his vocals. I'll have to pull out my Whiskey VHS tape. I hope it still plays. I saw them in a small club/bar around this time and I thought at the time what a sad way to go out for a once great band. They hung through some real low points. Do you know where this "director's cut" came from? I'm assuming someone had an inside source in the band?
With all the vocal issues Steve Walsh was having, I enjoyed the ending of PONR, bad ass! Helluva performance, such a great band! Kansas ROCKS! 🥰🤟🎤🎸🎹🎼🥁🎻
thank you very much i always loved this cd album it was and it is a sign of how they where superlative performers of today, in 1992, and how they remained so professuonal and hot in these last years
Steve has been my Vocal mentor & Phil on Drums and been there done that" Not at your best because of a medicinal distraction, but you still hear that incredible voice and stage presence behind it still shine! The rest of the Band playing everything just like the record and always impressive to see LIVE. I had the opportunity to talk to Phil and a hello to Rich/Steve as the get ready for Sound Check for about three minutes! I had a gig in a large tent on the other side of Waterside Park in Norfolk, Va. That gave me access to the rear entrance of the tent next to Phils drums 6-8 ft. away! So Cool!
If you buy the DVD live at whiskey, Steve sang over the tracks when his voice was better. Sometimes he didn't take care of his gift. I love him and he'll always be my favorite. Billy is my Brother from another mother. They still rock today and Ronnie's voice gets better all the time. Steve did an album Black Buterfly with Jerome Mazza. Jerome should have replaced Steve. His voice blows Ronnie's away. Ronnie gives you a good performance. However there is only one Steve Walsh. If you have had the gift of seeing him in his prime you'll never forget it.
Try this, LIVE 2021 "Today Is The Day" ua-cam.com/video/nYWFTT2JWoo/v-deo.html or "A Frozen Serenade" from same show ua-cam.com/video/uca2R0T-vg0/v-deo.html audience 'restricted' due to c0v!d rules. As a Kansas/prog fan of 7 decades of life, LOVEBITES is the band I am most impressed by and enjoy daily.
My wife and I saw them in Melbourne, FL possibly around this time at some place called the Power Station. Might have been the Jan 18, 1992 show. Thoroughly enjoyed it though I can't remember if it was a "good" show or not. :)
Sure it could have been cleaner. This is Rock and Roll. Steve was pouring his soul/giving his life for his craft. Glad he straightened out, but I find no fault here only gratitude for the capture of this event.
i never had problems with this album i loved it in 1992 i buyed ut in rome where i am from no worry for vocals as many said, it was a very hot live album for its time you have to consider that
I enjoyed it but have to admit I was shocked by the sound of Steve's voice. The last release was "In the spirit of things" and I hadn't seen them live at that point so going from the strong vocals on that album to the roughness on this one was a bit of a shock
@@jacquetrosper7780 The key to using drugs and alcohol is moderation!! Too bad Steve couldn't moderate in the same way that Kerry did in the early days of the band. When you lose the ability to moderate, then it is time to quit.
@@edcollins9377 the key to everything in life is moderation. You can enjoy many things in life if you just don't over do it. Like you say, when you lose the ability to moderate, it's time to quit. Your body develops a physical tolerance to whatever your binge is and you end up taking more for the effect you crave. That's when you should take a break from whatever you're doing. Addicts can't take a break, because they're hooked and the sudden withdrawal could kill them. Their only option is to take more to get their fix. The human body can only take so much until something has to give. That's where you hear about people overdosing on their drug of choice.
There was an official release of it with the overdubbed vocals but it's impossible to find and this version I uploaded contains a couple of extra tunes that are not on the official release
a curiosity, it misses the last track, ok my question is about the double edition of this live album, i wanna know if there are video or just audio live recording from 1974, not bootleg not audience recording but from motherboard, thanks
Love this performance-yea I know drugs booze etc etc, but you can't just change vocal chords like drum heads or guitar strings. Even some the best singers who are clean loose thier vox with age. Time happens. Still one of my all time favorite bands and Regardless Steves energy is awesome to see just my 2 half cents :-)
@@christo6765 - Steve has stated publicly that cocaine, pot and booze are what wrecked his voice. I’m sure the road didn’t help, but when he got clean, he regained a lot of range and clarity in his voice. At some point, I think the ravages of time became a bigger factor. Having said that, in his prime, the guy was in a league all his own, IMHO; the most mind-blowing and soulful vocal acrobat I’ve ever heard.
@@crusheverything4449 just sayin, this show in particular, under great pressure to do first video right etc, Steve s pupils are not at all dilated. he does look right into the camera...
great band. had a bit of a weep because steve obviously full of drugs and struggling with his voice but still great energy and performance. kudos to all the band
Wow... some of the comments are so brutal. I am a singer and know what it's like when you are sick and you can't get the notes out. All you haters out can f@ck off. Rich’s guitar tone is so good . Underrated he really is.
Kansas has always been a band of true genius. Thanks guys, each member from beginning to end, quite special.
So great...will never be a band like this again
As a lifelong Kansas fan, this was a little hard to watch. Steve, obviously struggling with demons, gutted it out. Thankfully he is clean and hopefully enjoying retirement. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his amazing talent and energy that provided us with some of the most amazing and influential music ever recorded. Today's version of Kansas is a tight, efficient unit that is always musically spot on and never has an off night. Can't wait to see them in May and again in August.
this is sad to watch and I have listened to Kansas my entire life
We opened for them (Mara from Cincinnati) this same year during their club gigs. He wasn't very good that night either in Newport, KY. We actually blew them off the stage during our 45 minute opener and Steve even complimented us on helping carry the show for them.
@@Indybowhntr who are you?
@@Indybowhntr was this is 1995 at Coyotes? If it was i remember you guys. Kansas came out and was loud as fuck! You guys sounded much better
Well said.
We're hopelessly human.
Beautiful story Ran... I share much of it... Except for the good women part or should I say good man part. I unfortunately didn't find that kind of love that many were blessed with. So happy that your life has a silver lining.
Beautiful insight…..
The energy of this band is unbelievable. Tight and super . Just as good as listening to them in my living room. Fantastic
Texas Axe Slinger that is an eye opening story..wow .
Texas Axe Slinger An amazing account of life on the road in one of the most important bands of the last 50 years.
The incomparable Steve Walsh!!!👍
I can find plenty of other horrible performances that compare to this one by Walsh.

As an old school fan, I can say this...Rich's guitar is tasty and a bit evolved. As a drummer , I always love Eharts work. Thanks Kansas.
Super agree. His tone is so Kansas .
Ehart has always been underrated in my opinion
@@drewrutberg5393 - Except by the throngs of people saying he’s underrated.
A lot of responsibility fell on Rich after the loss of Livgren and Morse. He is incredible! One of my heros 👍
Mine too … his tone and sound is so underrated.
Did some remolding work for him when his dad passed he was just one of the guys nice as could be
I did remolding work for him too!
U and me both.
No hall of fame for these guys or Styx both have already lost an original member and Chucky of Styx has not got long left
I saw this promo-ish tour at a large patio stage, outdoor bar and grill joint in Htown. Really rocking and was nice to witness most of the original band together.
Steve Walsh uno de los mejores cantantes del mundo!!! Unico... Lo Amooo...
Phil played EXCEPTIONALLY well on this.
Haha yeah he was top notch 😉👍🤟
Wow, toller Gig! 😊....Phil Ehart ist ein fantastischer Drummer
He's in Houston these days. I'll pass on to him your well wishes.
The set list was Song for America, Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel, Down the Road, Belexes, Drum Solo, Guitar Solo, Child of Innocence, Bringing it Back and Can I Tell You.
actually, i heard they were even better early 70's, before becoming known...
I can hear every song in my head right now...
I'd rather listen to this version of Steve's voice than any music produced today
David Lane I agree David..👀
With you on that David Lane!! 👍
THAT'S WHAT THE RECORDINGS ARE FOR,i'm just damn glad he's alive,he is a real juke box hero,KANSAS FAN TILL THE END,its been a long journey
Ditto. Saw y them last year in Rochester. 3rd row from stage so great still
I agree with your reference to Steve Walsh's voice...
Bless you Steve Walsh. RIP Robby
Once Steve stopped using in 1997 his voice improved greatly
He's 68 now so he better take it easy
I've seen Kansas many times over the years ( lifelong fan)...have never seen a bad performance.....and Black Butterfly is top form...forever Kansas
David McKown Did you grow up around Topeka?
Reminds me - I need to listen to 1995's Freaks Of Nature again. What a hard rocking Kansas album. It blew me aways when it came out.
Where was Robby during this concert, just not the same without him especially during Miracles out of Nowhere
Never mind just looked it up and he was heading up his own band at the time which I didn't know he did.
I agree. It sucked that they edited out the solos on the album. It wasn't until I saw the video years later that I finally got to see and hear them.
I saw this tour Ragsdale was incredible !
I thought the music sounded great. However, Steve's vocals had been wrecked by too much marijuana and whiskey ( his words ). Glad he is better now.
Great show. Always love hearing Kansas play. ❤
At his peak, STEVE WALSH is one of the absolute BEST singers of all time
If not THE best!!!!!
Great to see the 2 “new” guys, David Ragsdale & Billy Greer are still with the band today. Phil Ehart has always been a solid, drum groove machine.
David just retired from the band about 3 weeks ago.
He did a hand stand on the keys i mean completly vertical i was blown away i had never seen a band so

This is sad to watch. Huge Steve Walsh fan. Good that he got past his addictions
I would rather watch Steve than any imitators,
His vocal abilities had seriously slipped by '92. I don't know about anyone else, but this is sad, imho.
Wow amazing. Around this time I saw them and Steve was jumping all over everything i couldn't believe what I saw I was like if an old guy like that (maybe 10 or so over me) could jump and dance , love this as much as he did I could love it 10x or more so time more!!! Great band great shows!
He was 41 here. You were young!
The note Steve Walsh hits at the end of Hold On is just insane
I read that the singer for Dream Theater,.James Labrie had screwed up his voice bad after a case of food poisoning and said it took several years to get it back
No me canso de escuchar esta banda. Siplemente genios.
Now I'm glad I went to this small bar show but at the time, sheeesh.....
yea, that was a real treat to stand inches away from nose to nose and experience their genius...
I would say it's a low point of their career.
i remember seeing Aerosmith in 1983 and the whole band was so high they couldn't stand up.

It's hard not to feel bad for Steve Walsh here. He was obviously struggling and was, how we used to say, wired out of his mind.
Absolutely. Steve is a legend....
actually, Steve always had issues with voice after laying it all out on the road over and over, regardless of substance if that even existed?
@@christo6765 He abused cocaine for years.

I'm a 50 years veteran and fan of these guys!
Great memory for you, but they never should have released this video. Cringe worthy.
@kbrewski1 If you are referring to Steve's vocals as cringe worthy, he thought so too. For the official release of this performance, Steve went back into the studio and re-recorded all of his vocals! This "Director's Cut" performance just appears here on UA-cam and was never officially released.
@smaddox-no9br
I didn't know that he re-recorded his vocals.
Steve's voice, omg it's heartbreaking

That gave me access to the rear entrance of the tent next to Phils drums 6-8 ft. away! So Cool!
I was living in LA in 92. I was plugged into the music business. How I missed this concert this concert I'll never know.
Kansas has more talent then any other bands pinky
Geddy Lee's pinky says, "Fuck off, eh?"
I was never impressed with Steve he might have thought he was Kansas NOT God bless you Robbie May your voice live forever awesome man !!!!
Jamás me cansare de escuchar a esta legendaria banda y al genio Steve Walsh .
It's sad to hear Steve's voice so trashed. I saw Kansas back in the 70s. Steve killed it. He was one of my favorite vocalists back in the day.
I love Williams guitar sound, quite the definition of how a US rock guitar should sound
Great band but video is marred by numerous ads, Steve's voice is shot but he still puts on a good performance! head stands on the keyboard!
adblockplus.org No more ads!
Steve's voice may be a bit "tired" here but the band is amazing and this is still leaps and bounds better than any new band in 2021
Couldn’t agree more!
Try this, LIVE 2021 "Today Is The Day" ua-cam.com/video/nYWFTT2JWoo/v-deo.html
or "A Frozen Serenade" from same show ua-cam.com/video/uca2R0T-vg0/v-deo.html
audience 'restricted' due to c0v!d rules.
I've been practicing my craft/vocals since I was 15 (now 52), but to have a few or more vocal lessons from Steve Walsh, would be insanely awesome!
Sure it could have been cleaner. This is Rock and Roll. Steve was pouring his soul/giving his life for his craft. Glad he straightened out, but I find no fault here only gratitude for the capture of this event.
it was their first vid. Had to make good.
Simply Fantástic 👏👏🎵🎼🎶🎤🎸😎👊
R.i.p. robbie peace & love 😢😢😢😢 u brother
i never had problems with this album i loved it in 1992 i buyed ut in rome where i am from no worry for vocals as many said, it was a very hot live album for its time you have to consider that
I enjoyed it but have to admit I was shocked by the sound of Steve's voice. The last release was "In the spirit of things" and I hadn't seen them live at that point so going from the strong vocals on that album to the roughness on this one was a bit of a shock
Never let a man who has been high on cocaine since the 1970s, launder his own denim jacket..
thats fucked up but so funny
I believe the man said the hotel people laundered Steve's jacket, not Steve.
He looks like Pauly Shore. Its not cool to see him this bad off.
Cocaine numbs the vocal chords. Fortunately he got clean since then..
Cocaine also numbs the head and makes one feel WONDERFUL!
@@edcollins9377 not worth that....
@@jacquetrosper7780 The key to using drugs and alcohol is moderation!! Too bad Steve couldn't moderate in the same way that Kerry did in the early days of the band. When you lose the ability to moderate, then it is time to quit.
Ed Collins dam pushers
@@edcollins9377 the key to everything in life is moderation. You can enjoy many things in life if you just don't over do it. Like you say, when you lose the ability to moderate, it's time to quit. Your body develops a physical tolerance to whatever your binge is and you end up taking more for the effect you crave. That's when you should take a break from whatever you're doing.
Addicts can't take a break, because they're hooked and the sudden withdrawal could kill them. Their only option is to take more to get their fix. The human body can only take so much until something has to give. That's where you hear about people overdosing on their drug of choice.
if walsh had occasion to rework the vocals why dont apply it to a new video release of it ? meanwhile thanks a lot for uploading it
There was an official release of it with the overdubbed vocals but it's impossible to find and this version I uploaded contains a couple of extra tunes that are not on the official release
a curiosity, it misses the last track, ok my question is about the double edition of this live album, i wanna know if there are video or just audio live recording from 1974, not bootleg not audience recording but from motherboard, thanks
Awesome show!
Gosh the band is amazing
An old friend Kerry Livgren... Only the genius behind their greatest songs.
Mi faceva molto male vedere Steve in quelle condizioni ❤️
Am I lack? How did I not find this, my favorite stuff before? Or are you all distributed in secret places? The best progressive rock of all time.
Well said friend.
i
steve always had that super energy. you dont get abs like that from getting high etc. Steve was extremely athletic. And the road took its toll.
Dust in the wind ,my favorite
Em 92 ainda era possível produzir fielmente a fantástica percussão que marcou esta banda. Hoje os instrumentos não permitem o mesmo padrão.
Was there! Awesome!
Man, how do you have to become. To be able to play in such a band……….
They are sooooo impressive.
great band. had a bit of a weep because steve obviously full of drugs and struggling with his voice but still great energy and performance. kudos to all the band
Great performance and yes I forgive you Steve, we deal with it all of us, at least me
Me sorprendió este vídeo.
No sabia que Steve estaba en esa movida 😦
Es la VOZ de una generación o de varias en realidad.
Un genio y un artista único
😤
Ya se 😔 que bueno que pudo dejar esos vicios
can you add setlist with timestamps ?
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}
Rags is amazing
Esta formación vino a Chile, de las mejores de la banda, los vi en el movistar arena..
Greer is soooo disappointed @ 49:26... you can see it in his face.
1:14:35 ... Greer is disgusted when Walsh drenched in sweat touches his leather jacket
Wow... some of the comments are so brutal. I am a singer and know what it's like when you are sick and you can't get the notes out. All you haters out can f@ck off. Steve Walsh is as good as Steve Perry, Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury. This mans performance on record s and other live shows are on so incredible. Have some Respect!!!
