You have no idea how long I've been searching for a recording of the Lied that is actually the Lied and not just the Christmas carol it was later adapted into.
Just great to finally be able to hear the whole work in its entirety. As I recall, the original scoring is with massed voices and multiple brass bands, so it would now be a new goal to hear the work in that form.
Thank you very much for such a wonderful performance. I have sought this work with the original chorus, and this is the only one I could find. Thanks a lot for publishing this and giving us access to an unknown musical world. I can now imagine the performance in the market square in Leipzig.
1:57 Hark The Herald Angels Sing Glory to the Newborn king Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled Joyful all ye nations rise Join the triumph of the skies With angelic hosts proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem Hark the Herald Angels sing Glory to the Newborn King
What a discovery! Thanks for uploading THIS fancy me not looking for this before the origin of a well-loved Christmas hymn tune! I've heard the "Hymn Of Praise" of course but not this....😊
And of course both the Hymn of Praise and the Festgesang feature the great Nun Danket another jewel in the crown of German church music How wonderful to have all these tunes that too many take for granted! PS but I'ma bit of a pleb
I used an old keyboard reduction (with an English translation for the voices) that I literally found in a sale bin at a music store maybe ten years ago and the full scores from IMSLP to make this recording, so there was a lot of back-and-forth. I feel like somebody ought to print a vocal score (maybe Carus?) but I'm not sure that they do.

Me too! Also worth noting that the chorale at the end sounds a lot like the hymn "Nun danket alle Gott."
@@MizzKittyBichon it sounds like it because it is, indeed, the same tune :)
me too

I'm a bit of a pleb I've forgotten the German title of the Hymn Of Praise 🙄
"Lobgesang", it's called. And a masterpiece it is, under-discussed
@@klop4228 Thanks for reminding me!
Lobgesang LOBEN DEN HERREN = PRAISE to the Lord
👍
Do you possibly have a copy of the score that you could share please?
