I think the best one that they ever made is called Yokohama Hakuraitei curry. Quite expencive to buy but it's worth it ! I also make curry with mince meat and potao onion carrot, dice all in same size about 15mm. First fry chopped garlic and add meat salt and pepper then carrot onion potato. Add water just to cover ingredients. cook little very quick they cook because all the vege is small cube. off heat to add curry block. Add 1 tea spoon each of soy sauce, tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, shot of coffee and a tea spoon strawberry jam. Chop onion fine and sprincle over hot rice and serve curry. Fine chopped raw onion on rice is so nice with curry 😋
I make my own curry roux rather than use the store bought. Infinitely better. I've been experimenting with addons. I usually go with apple and honey for a safe dish but I've also tried subbing in chocolate (which is nice) and coffee (which is less nice because I can't stand coffee but it was recommended that I try it at least once).
I am Japanese and I recommend this recipe. I was fed up with different youtubers and people from overseas who have probably never had real Japanese-style curry and uploaded someone's degraded copy of the recipe. Actually, Japanese-style curry is very easy to make if you use curry roux. All you have to do is boil vegetables and meat in water and add curry roux. The curry roux contains not only spices and flour, but also all the secret ingredients, bouillon, stock, etc., so basically you don't need to add anything. The first thing you do is simply eat this. This is basic Japanese-style curry. If it is not enough, you can add a small amount of spices and secret ingredients to your liking the next time you make it yourself.

Yep, been our family favorite for over 40 years, and now passed on to my children. Golden Curry forever! When we use beef, I usually stew the beef first because it takes a long time for it to actually become tender, then add the carrots because they take longer to cook than the potatoes and onions. Once all tender, I remove it all from the pot, then sautee the onions. Once translucent, I add back all the rest, check for tenderness, then add the roux to finish. That way I don't end up with chewy beef and mushy potatoes and onions.
@denisebolanos7006 not for your typical American stew meat, we prefer bigger chunks (about an inch square). Sometimes I'll brown and cook in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes, remove the lid and finish everything in the pot.
Golden Curry is my favorite brand. The medium heat is probably the best overall flavor. Its just hot enough to warm your tongue without making you grab the water or sweat profusely.
All five heat levels are pretty much the same. Hardly any different. The Japanese usually have low tolerance to spiciness but otherwise it's hardly noticeable by people otherwise. I add two whole dry red chilli peppers, and a nice pinch of white pepper in addition to the existing spiciness level 5 box which just seems too mellow for my tastes.

In Australia you can get this at most sushi takeaways but the curry sauce, onions, carrots, potatoes and garlic is blended in to a smooth sauce and poured over crumbed chicken pieces and rice, with some pickled ginger. It delicious either way chunky or smooth. Yummy 👍

I have made the curry from this video a number of times now. It turns out good every time. I have tried the curry with and without the extra ingredients. The curry is still delicious without the extra ingredients, but it is even more delicious with the extra ingredients. I personally like to simmer the beef for an hour and forty minutes before adding the potatoes, carrots, and onions. It makes the beef so tender. I just make sure when I do, that I use six cups of water instead of five because a lot will evaporate. Also, I only have 3.2 oz roux packets at my store, and I have been using 6.5 oz instead of 8 and it’s still turning out pretty good :)
Clear instructions that have worked perfectly. I was glad to find the same Golden Curry in Stockholm shops. This is perfect for two days of dinner meals. Thank you.

@@maracuconu9587 The Japanese Food Kitchen (known as JFK) is where several varieties of the curry can be found. It's on Södermalm, close to the Swedenborg entrance of the commuter train station. Also the curry is available at the Asian Supermarket, Högtorget, downtown. Enjoy Stockholm!
I heard somewhere that Vermont curry (brand) is better than Golden since it already has a taste of apple and honey. I've recently been introduced to Japanese curry and started craving for it, so I'll definitely try this recipe.
Vermont definitely has a lot of fans as well! I personally like adding my own fresh apples and honey, as opposed to having those flavours already part of the curry roux - but Vermont certainly adds convenience if that's important! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy making the recipe :)
Even folks in my house who don't like curry loved this! I made it without meat and was missing the Worcestershire sauce but it was still fabulous, especially adding the honey, ketchup and apple. Delicious with rice 😋.
Amazing to hear that your family enjoyed this, even though they aren't necessarily big fans of curry! It's truly a dish that everyone can enjoy. Thanks for sharing!
Second time making this, once without the extras for the sauce and once with it, and it makes all the difference, never knew it was this simple! Thank you so much for this video
For the best result possible I suggest to cook meat, potatoes and carrots each separate to the perfect texture, cool done carrots and potatoes under cool water. Store everything in the fridge and only mix at the end. Also for the potatoes boil them with a little bit of winegar and you don't need to know what type of potatoes you use. For the meat just boil it for about 2-3 hours until really tender in water+ salt... You will get tender meat +stock... You don't need to sear the meat, the curry will cover it anyway. I used 3 shallots instead of onions and garlic. I used a wine + corn starch reduction instead of worstercher sauce. You can make the roux and the Ketchup at home really easy. Every tbsp is 15g, 5 cups are 1 liter or 1kg or 1000g, just make it more since you can use it for the rice and also freeze your stock. Still a perfect base recipe.
Personally, I love using pork in my curry. I also like to cook it either in the slow cooker or the Dutch oven, because that slow-cook taste is fantastic. Last time I made it, I subbed water for chicken stock, which gave it a nice savory flavor. Now I have to try the honey/apple/Worcestershire/ketchup combo!
I've tried this recipe using Kokumaro Curry Roux and it tastes amazing! Those 4 secret ingredients really made a difference! I will cook this again using Golden Curry next time. Thank you for sharing this recipe! 🙂

I made this and ate some just now!! Wow that is so yummy! Thank you for this recipe. I added some spring onion on the top of my curry and used beef mince instead of chunks.. Also could only find the curry in medium hot and it was quite mild as far as spice goes. Sooo yummy
Thanks so much for watching! Spring onion is definitely a classic topping; and minced beef is a great choice too. Yes the spice level is generally milder in Japanese curry than it is for other types of curry; but I guess it also depends on the individual person's tolerance for heat :) Thanks so much again!

I cooked this today!!!!! It's so delicious!!!!!!!! Thank you for this simple but yummy recipe! The beef took a while to soften so i continued to simmer it for about 40 mins. I don't mind that the carrots and potatoes got softer coz that was perfect for me. Don't forget to stir occasionally to avoid burning the bottom of the pot!
Followed this recipe but changed a few things. 1. I let the entire thing cook for two hours. 2. The onions simmered into the liquid and thickened the gravy to the point they were gone. 3. Subbed apple for two tablespoons of applesauce. The dish was excellent. But not even comparable to the following day. It was not kidding 10x better the following day.

I highly recommend using around 5 ounces of curry roux. Some Golden Curry are sold in 3.4oz boxes, and following the rest of this recipe (5 cups of stock/water) it will end up good but slightly lacking in curry flavor for my preference. I think using 7-8 ounces (larger boxes) would result in something a bit overpowering and super salty.
Thank you so much for the support, and for the kind words! I really appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed watching, and found it helpful and easy to follow!
Ive made this dish several times now and its one of my wife's most looked forward to meals! Thanks for the great simple recipe I dont know how anyone can mess this up! 😅
I do like this, first use previous day rice and put it in a pan until it's crispy at medium heat. For the curry, onion at low heat until it's translucid, potatoes and carrot added later and cooked at medium heat 2 min and then add 2/3 of glass of water with little soy sauce and some dashi powder stock and mix. Cutlet is fried on the side and cut and put over the rice. Once the potato is not too raw and not too well done, TURN OFF the heat and add ONE CUBE of curry and mix it together, if the mixture is too liquid just add a little bit of corn starch, not too much. This is a recipe for 1 portion.
Thank you for sharing your recipe it’s so simple to make. Some you tubers are not precise on simple stuff it makes more complicated. This recipe I will definitely follow.I recently visit Japan and I love the curry .

First time doing Japanese curry and honestly it's delecious i love the sweet taste that it leves in your mouth also it's cheap to make and most of the igridiants are bound to be in your house
I would fry up the potatoes and carrots until the brown on the edges after browning the beef and then set them aside. The I would sautee the rest of the ingredients with the beef and let it simmer for a couple of hours until the beef turns tender, then I would add the potatoes and the carrots back to simmer for another 30 minutes. Doing this for me gives it more flavor with regards to the potatoes and carrots.
Same with kadhi (a very nice curry), kebabs, kofta sabji, Bolognese/meat sauces & stews . The difference after one night in the fridge is very apparent. Spices have time to 'relax' and finish marination.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and tips! You're absolutely right - it's such a delicious and easy dish that no matter how you make it, it'll come out just great!
I've made huge heaps of this dish three times now, so incredible
That's amazing to hear! I'm so glad you enjoyed the recipe - it's definitely going to be a go-to of mine during these colder months!
In Australia you can get this at most sushi takeaways but the curry sauce, onions, carrots, potatoes and garlic is blended in to a smooth sauce and poured over crumbed chicken pieces and rice, with some pickled ginger.
It delicious either way chunky or smooth. Yummy 👍
Oh that's so interesting! I've never tried blending the ingredients beforehand like that before but I'll have to give it a try sometime - thanks for sharing that interesting tidbit!
@@toastyapron I've never tried it with beef and not blended lol 👍 same to you I'll have to give this one a go haha 🙂
That's what I love about food and cooking, the same thing done differently can be amazing 🙂
@@toastyapronplease do a video on it.
Thank you for diner idea tonight!
Thanks for sharing! I'm so glad you've enjoyed making this and that it's turned out so well for you each time!
THE BEST QUICK curry recipe I've tried (4th one). Thnx!
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Clear instructions that have worked perfectly. I was glad to find the same Golden Curry in Stockholm shops. This is perfect for two days of dinner meals. Thank you.
That's great to hear! I'm glad you were able to find Golden Curry where you live, it's a staple in my kitchen for an easy and delicious dinner. Thanks so much for watching!
Hej! Do you remember the store where you found it? My boyfriend lives in Stockholm and I want to cook him this dish when I come visit ❤️
@@maracuconu9587 Hi, there's the Asian Supermarket just off of Sveavägen, underground station Hötorget, downtown.
The store that has the broadest selection of Japanese foods is called the Japanese Food Kitchen on Södermalm, close to the commuter train station called Stockholm Söder. I hope you have a wonderful stay in Stockholm!
I've made it twice now, and it's awesome. I tried the medium heat Golden Curry and the mild one-both are very good.
That's awesome to hear, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for giving it a try!
Yep. Both Vermont and Java are better than Golden.
With this golden curry, it is never a problem to make an nice curry. This stuff is really easy to use and delicious.
I totally agree - it’s so easy and delicious! Thanks for watching!
Second time making this, once without the extras for the sauce and once with it, and it makes all the difference, never knew it was this simple! Thank you so much for this video
Awesome to hear that! The flavour enhancers definitely add a different dimension to the recipe, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your feedback!
Hmm that's a lot more work though. Can the stew shown in the video be frozen or am I better off halving all ingredients and keeping it in the fridge?
Personally, I love using pork in my curry. I also like to cook it either in the slow cooker or the Dutch oven, because that slow-cook taste is fantastic. Last time I made it, I subbed water for chicken stock, which gave it a nice savory flavor. Now I have to try the honey/apple/Worcestershire/ketchup combo!
This has recently become one of my favorite recipes. I've made it with beef, chicken and even pork and I can't get enough of it. Thank you!
Amazing to hear that you've enjoyed it over and over again with different protein variations! Thanks so much for watching!
Even without the special ingredients it still tastes so good.
Thank you for the recipe.
Thanks so much for watching!
Wow - I just remembered my time in Guam & Japan and how much I loved the Japanese curry. Made this tonight! Thanks for the tutorial.
That's awesome! I'm so glad it brought back memories and that you enjoyed making it at home! Thanks for watching :)
Does it taste similar to what you had in Japan and Guam?
I've tried this recipe using Kokumaro Curry Roux and it tastes amazing! Those 4 secret ingredients really made a difference! I will cook this again using Golden Curry next time. Thank you for sharing this recipe! 🙂

As a non-Japanese, I camne across this dish in one piece and it is downright similar to the apple. I am amazed.

Crazy how straightforward it is. I've tried it and it was so good. This is how I cook my curry nowadays
It's such a simple and easy dish to make, for sure! Thanks so much for watching!
@@toastyapron no, you made it easy for us. I hate online recipe because long and complicated and they don’t even tell you the secret ingredients. So props to you! Keep making amazing recipes!!!
Was it spicy
@@turtlegaming6188 not at all, there are no spicy ingredients in the recipe
I made this and ate some just now!! Wow that is so yummy! Thank you for this recipe. I added some spring onion on the top of my curry and used beef mince instead of chunks.. Also could only find the curry in medium hot and it was quite mild as far as spice goes. Sooo yummy
Thanks so much for watching! Spring onion is definitely a classic topping; and minced beef is a great choice too. Yes the spice level is generally milder in Japanese curry than it is for other types of curry; but I guess it also depends on the individual person's tolerance for heat :) Thanks so much again!
i really love this video. i’ve come back time and time again! this video is comforting to me! thank you for breaking it down and making it really easy. it means a lot ❤
You're very welcome! Thanks so much for the kind words, I'm glad you found it helpful and comforting to watch!
just made this a few days ago, its so easy and I make this fairly regularly and cheap too. id say the only difference is that I cut my vegetables a lot smaller and use pork instead of beef usually but you can pretty much use anything.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoy it as much as I do!
I love curry dishes and I have had Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, and Japanese. The thing is I always hesitate to make them myself because I don’t have enough patience and confidence but your video for the Japanese Curry Rice makes it easy to follow.👍🍛

That's awesome to hear! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that it turned out so great for you 😀 Thanks for watching and for giving it a try!
Awesome to hear! Thanks for giving the recipe a try - I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Yes! Great point about next-day leftovers - I agree, they always taste even better the next day (esp. this dish)! 😀

As a Japanese person, my favorite curry is a mixture of golden curry and Java curry.
Love combining those two as well! Thanks for sharing and for watching!
I never comment on UA-cam videos. This was literally the best thing I have ever put in my mouth. The whole house smelled amazing and my very very picky two year old loved I it.
I really like your videos and how easy the recipes are to follow ( I’m a total beginner) ! I hope to see more videos from you!

That's amazing to hear! I'm so glad you and your wife enjoy this as dish as much as I do! Thanks so much for watching! 😀

First time doing Japanese curry and honestly it's delecious i love the sweet taste that it leves in your mouth also it's cheap to make and most of the igridiants are bound to be in your house
Totally agree with you! It's super convenient and easy to make, and so incredibly delicious each and every time. Thanks for watching!
That's a great tip! Thanks so much for sharing and for watching!

I agree! Leftover curry the next day always hits the spot!
Same with kadhi (a very nice curry), kebabs, kofta sabji, Bolognese/meat sauces & stews . The difference after one night in the fridge is very apparent. Spices have time to 'relax' and finish marination.
