  • Norfolk & Western 611 on a trip between Manassas and Front Royal, VA.
This is the overpass at the top of Linden Hill. This portion of the line has a 1.5% grade, and the 611 is leading a 20-car train. Periodic rain earlier in the day made what is normally a tricky spot into a real battle. The skilled crew was ready, as 611 crawls up the grade in one of the most impressive steam performances many people had seen. You could literally feel the exhaust as the 611 came close. Numerous railroaders and fans later called this one of the best single performances by an excursion locomotive in decades.
*Note: this was filmed freehand amongst a large crowd. The shot is left relatively intact despite shakiness (aside from running to the other side of the overpass) to preserve the audio show that occurred.*
Don't forget to comment, like, share, and subscribe for plenty of great railroading action from all over the eastern USA!
