Man that tape saturation & wobble are so gorgeous. You keep proving the value of paying attention to detail, and I think you're inspiring people to think beyond just stringing some volcas together and calling it a day. Even modular is just one of your many tools. Pure gold here.
Growing up in a small town in a black forest in Germany sounds just like my childhood in Nova Scotia....this was some luscious sounds. Scary to be sure, but luscious .
@@howardkleger I just ended up getting the Marantz 222 but I've since switched to a Fostex 4 track cassette that I'll soon be bouncing with a Fostex 4 track reel to reel
This is an amazing concept! I work almost totally on my computer because I'm always afraid of committing sounds to cassette. But I'm going to try to take more "risks" in my music process now. Thank you so much for inspiring me, Hainbach!
Switching to hardware helped me a lot in progressing as a musician. Made me step out of my comfort zone and commit 100% to what I make. Much easier to get into a flow state when I don't have the ability to indulge my perfectionism and hit undo every 10 seconds. Software is objectively better in most ways but hardware can be very useful, especially when it comes to experimentation and creativity. Personally can't get anything done on a DAW.
This sounds beautiful! In particular the low ends: the SE-02 sounds great. Apart from the nice break down of the whole process, I really appreciate your comment on recording in one take: I usually record in Live, but nevertheless I force myself as much as possible to only record what I play in one take, and add some really minor finish later. As you say, it raises the stakes, and so it creates this tension where everything could brake up, or at least go into unexpected direction. You can clearly hear this tension in your music: it is something that to me inspires acceptance, rather than perfection. Pure bliss.
Lovely work dude. You do a good job of incorporating your tape-loop style into the composition so its not simply noise or atmosphere, but something that fits perfectly and creates mood and tension.
Man this was awesome! I loved how to touched on the overall thought process of composing for a movie. Could you do more on organizing the work to be done for picture? It's easy to get lost at sea and not lock down the arc
Great story and lovely process. Thank you for sharing this! I love how the affordable stuff usually has the most character. It's not necessarily the nicest character, but a character nonetheless. Except for the OP-1. It's just awesome.
Im certainly going watch more of your videos, this is inspiring. This Is now one of my favourite video, easy to listen to and understand. Projects are the way forward, being given a challenge rather than creating something without purpose (here im talking about myself), gives you direction as you already have an idea of the end result you want to achieve. Great video.
Thank you! Projects indeed help me a lot to focus myself - they trigger new ideas. I do set them forself also often, as with the Gamelan strips series.
You got great inspirational sources. I am a movie geek and I follow you especially on the goblin soundtrack. Your soundtrack is a kind of its own. Really great. As a lover of Italian movies from 60th and 70th, I did an adaption of Stelvios main theme of Cani Arrabiati recently and now struggle with mixing it ;) It is meant as a homage to U-He and so I only used their Hive2 for all sound source. A little bit limiting but that was the goal. I also will use some lofi tape effects (plugins) in the mix for it. Your channel is a great source of going on experimentating for me. Have joy and be sound.
Just went and checked out your contributions to the UA-cam Audio libairy. *Wow. Just WOW!* Fav's are: Vehicle Chase/They Can Feel You/The Others Are Coming/Alive Evil and The Attraction Of Evil. I think I'm gonna change out the opening music on some of my uploads on my other UA-cam channel [LaserDisc Rarities] after I run a track or several through GOLDWAVE to shorten them to my need's.
What a great story you put into the tracks. It's like the story made the music. Great use of the instruments and effects. Totally love the CF it's a very very competent field explorer that I've used in some of my projects. It really gives you that freedom you want. Great work mate!
Utterly enthralling, captivating and brilliant. From you're conceptual idea, to the music that not only is a perfect fit for you're visualisation, but music that takes you on a trip into the world of horror. A perfect balance of foreboding, terror, and tenderness. In a word fantastic 👍
you are so fucking good at what you do!!! intelligent, creative, and driven to follow your passion. I love it, Hainbach you're the man!!!! xoxo from California!!!
The wires aren't recording anything. They're just in-between the strings of the piano to change its sound to ones that usually wouldn't be proper piano tuning. It's referred to as "prepared piano," and its been used by composers like John Cage, Henry Cowell, Aphex Twin.. and Hainbach.
Really enjoyed you going through the process of composing and recording. And I’ve been told my ancestors came from the Black Forest. Was pretty close to there this summer, in Strasbourg, and had a strange feeling that I’d been there before. Hope to visit one day.
Yep, I definetly heard the Goblin in those tracks. One of these days I'll get a movie of the ground, and Hainbach is one of those I want to get for the soundtrack... :D
Sounds great (as usual!).Have you ever seen the movie Beyond the Black Rainbow? The OST by Sinoia Caves is fantastic. The movie ends up being like a music video for the soundtrack.
Love it man! Ive always wanted to compose a horror score as well. You did an amazing job!!! I really love your use of the distorted 606! Keep on trucking
4:41 "flow state" is such an interesting concept, and lately I've been chasing that flow state and actually find that I react the opposite under pressure and start screwing up. Do you have any tips/exercises that get you into that state? I acheived it last week and haven't gotten there since.
That is a course onto itself. First you must know what you want. Second you must be a master of your instruments or be able to throw believable distractions. Third if you fail, fail gracefully. Fourth it's not an error if you do it twice. Five is listen. There is so much more but I would need to conceptualise a class on this.
Fantastic video, and I love your concept for the album. I have to say, your videos really have inspired me to work on some stuff. I bought my own Variable Speed Record-capable tape player the other day, a Panasonic RR-830, when I couldn't seem to outbid others for a few different C1s that have come up on eBay. I haven't tried it yet, but when I do, I'll let you know how it goes.
@@Hainbach Had a chance to play with the recorder. I only tried the internal mic, but it recorded well. The VSC feature is different than the speed control on the C1, as it's primary speed feature only slows it to 85%. There is a second tab that you can use to play back much slower, but I noticed that sharper sounds caused a weird stuttering effect when played back that way. I don't know if that's particular to "VSC," or if any tape recording slowed down might have that issue. For example, when I recorded a glockenspiel, the stutter was very apparent, but when I recorded a simulated Rhodes, it wasn't. There's no reverse feature, either. By the way, there's a new video from Earthquaker Devices in the "Show Me Your Junk" series with Lee Renaldo. Apparently the C1 was part of Sonic Youth's gear for many years.
My dream has always been to score horror movies, and I've just recently started on a project for one. You couldn't have timed this one more perfectly! Thanks.
Amazing! This is better than Thom Yorke's soundtrack. Can I ask how you got into scoring for theatre and film @Heinbach? I am focused on achieving this line of work and would be grateful for any tips or advice.
By far the best UA-cam content, keep up the good work! You are turly inspiring, wish I could get my hands on some theatre and movie projects sometime in the future.
Thank you for all your inspiring videos. Please would it be possible for you to creat a UA-cam video explaining and creating how to get the best out of Aalto as I am struggling to make sounds that really move me. All the best from Pembrokeshire in West Wales UK.

Awesome! I have to ask you. These dictaphones, are they only working with microphone signal? Or Can they be lined in? I really want the sound from my sp 404 to go to a dictaphone and then back
