Expectations & The Potential of A Burnt Field - Sangatsu no Lion
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- One of my favorite arcs in Sangatsu no Lion is the Burnt Field, in this video we trace the evolution of the symbolism of fire and sashes, and learn how it speaks to the themes of the value of expectations and potential.
Day 2 of the 5x5 is done! I'll likely come back to this topic / remake this video once it's over. I didn't get into nearly as much depth as I wanted to about the symbolism, tying it into the rest of the show, and talking more about the visual direction. It's already a long video without those things, so imagine my struggle figuring out what not to keep while I was writing.

Hi friends, about 2/3rds of this video got left on the cutting room floor to get it out on time. I’ll be re-releasing this with some of those missing observations about direction, other thematic ties to other parts of the story, and expanding on the symbolism inherent in this arc sometime in the future. If I didn’t love Sangatsu no Lion I wouldn’t bother, but I truly want to make sure why I think this arc is so special comes across in a deeper way than I believe I achieve here. I’ll be back tomorrow with the next video in the 5x5.
I need S3 so bad 😭😭😭
This magnificent video still has more to offer, I am really looking forward to it
Oh my god. I remember being on the tip of my toes this entire episode, one of the best episodes of the entire series. Sangatsu no lion is a wonderful masterpiece, but unfortunately very very underrated. Glad you made a video on this episode of the series. Truly a great analysis, congrats!
Sangatsu season 3 or we riot.
Plz 😭😭😭

The burnt field arc is my favorite piece of media. The dialogue, music, scenery, color choice, art designs and animations all blend perfectly together. But what makes it perfect for me is that all of this could perfectly stand on it's own.
the "man torch" is my favorite part of the whole series. i felt amazing after watching it.
Fyi, It's burning field arc not man torch 😁
That is, in my opinion, the best match I've ever seen in any "sports" anime, I really couldn't root just for one of the characters it was really an special experience
You might enjoy Hajime no Ippo, a great many fights are set up like this, though usually not as strong as this one (there are a few tho)
I absolutely applaud this. Honestly, Sangatsu no Lion is one of my favorite anime's and seeing it getting the attention it deserves makes me so happy. This show is just littered with motifs an symbolism
For 3-gatsu, I always love watching the arcs of the other characters. For instance, season 1 has the Shimada arc while season 2 has the Yanagihara arc. I always believe that 3-gatsu is not about Rei or shogi, but more of the development and growth of people. Currently reading the manga to re-experience each moment
The same can be said about the author's other work: honey and clover
I just recently finished this show and this scene was the moment where I felt comfortable calling this a masterpiece.
fr I think it's probably one of the best anime ever made, up there with other masterpieces like Monster
All the lessons and this show are just profound. The visuals, music, and writing is truly incredible. For being 44 episodes, there’s really nothing like it.
This essay is extremely well made, it actually made me tear up a bit. It reminded me of how impactful this show was to me and my life. I am currently trying to achieve my dreams as a writer and artist despite my slim chance of success and watching this only pushed me to do better, work harder.
I know this might not mean much but I hope you're doing well in your life too. Thank you.
March is my favorite anime! I'm glad to see some stuff of it on UA-cam
I just wanted to say thank you for content like this. Your, and others', analyses and commentaries have made my journey into anime something truly meaningful and personal. I started watching anime about a year ago with the typical shonen shows, but I initially saw anime as just a form of entertainment. When I started discovering new shows that carried deeper messages and their analyses, it's helped me appreciate anime as a legitimate medium in and of itself. I'm always surprised by how much meaning I derive from some anime and how applicable it's been to my own life, and videos like yours help me understand that.
sangatsu is criminally underrated. i havent seen as many analysis of it as many as other anime. so glad you upload one for it 👏
Whenever anybody say slice-of-life is the worst, I introduce them to 3-gatsu
AweRenj I guess in a way you could say that not many people have rated it because they haven’t watched it? lol
it's not underrated, it's extremely highly acclaimed critically and by audiences, it just doesn't have that much viewing at least outside Japan
I came back after 2 years for yours this video... 😇😇😇 Sangtsu no lion is Special to me... Close to my heart.
My favorite episode
Oh my god! This is best review of Sangatsu no Lion with my favorite arc.
I love your analysis more than anything.specialy the ones which are underrated animies 🤗🤗
I really love this anime, anytime someone speaks about it, my heart lights up. Even though I didn't understand everything the first time I watched it, the following times it has grown on me even more, as I built a connection with the characters and their feelings
one of the most underrated anime's of all time. - it has one of the best story and lesson. I really do love this Anime.
this is my favorite serialized anime arc, it is simply beyond beauty to see so many deep thoughts about expectations can be expressed in a animation, props to okada kenjirou and hajime ootani for this episodes being able to illustrate everything that was in the manga and use great direction and soundtrack to make it even more impactful
I've been waiting for someone to analyse this arc!! Thank you!
The best 2 episodes of the entire series
Absolutely PHENOMENAL video. Burnt Field one of the all time great anime arcs, PEAK FICTION
to this day, both kiriyama rei and sakutarou yanagihara are in my top 15 favorite anime characters of all time. they are just so beautifully written and so imperfectly wonderful. 3-gatsu no lion is a masterpiece.
forever waiting for season 3. this anime helped me when i was drowned 💦
Hope it helps me
Your videos are what I look to and think "Ah yeah that's what I want to do" Great work as always man. I don't watch UA-cam that much anymore but thanks for making that small bit of time that much better
If I will watch only one more episode of anime then retire, I would watch this one
Thanks for making a video about it
finally someone talking about 3-gatsu!
this anime is so good, I watched the anime on purpose slowly, I didn't want it to end kk, not that I had free time to marathon

This show is criminally underrated!
Well your video made me emotional and convinced of watching this series :)
Such a gorgeous arc. Great video btw.
Regarding the sashes: check out the importances of sashes in the ekiden races that are important and popular in Japan.
"Life is nothing but goodbye".
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing!
watching this reminds me how much i fucking love Sangatsu no Lion
Chica Umino is truly a masterful writer
I love this anime, i have read the manga and you can say rei is growth from zero to become human especially at chapter 110 and chapter 152
Masterpiece.
Im not crying....you are crying!
God I miss this show.
Underrated ANIME
I wish this was a longer video :(

this video was sent in March. The subject? "march comes in like a lion".
Coincidence? I think not
for more videos of sangatsu, arigatou gozaimasu
My Presenty here in this video after 4 years.... 2025-02-06
I love love love March Comes in Like a Lion! I read the rest of the manga though was kinda bummed on how it ended...great vid though! The melancholy and healing of moving through life with struggles really are captured so well in this series.
The manga is still currently printing so there's no conclusion yet.
Replay Value Really???!!!! Oh my gosh it totally fooled me....
yep manga hasn't ended yet ; its just that the chapters have an irregular release schedule
Expectations... Where have I Heard this word?
"Kowei yo Saku chan"
Dope
Is it getting a third season?
I had an issue with this arc, to be honest, i dont think he should feel responsible to win this title for his friends' sake and place his value on just winning a title. Life isn't all about work, I'm glad he won, but I'm starting to think he's too hard on himself. I understand it's because of his friends' expectations, he feels responsible to achieve his dream of winning the title for his friends' sake who couldn't pursue their dream anymore, but such is fate. It's not his responsibility to win for their sake at all. Shimada also places value on winning a title, but that's only because he doesn't want to crush hope of old people from his hometown who has consistently supported him. When he lost and the old folks were happy that Yanagihara won, Shimada smiled. For him, what matters is that they're happy.
Yanigahara was just trying to do what could do in his situation, he perserved and won, which is great. But he feels worthless since he's old and people even talk about his retirement which brings him sadness and doesn't know who he is outside of Shogi. Him winning further reinforces this idea which is really sad but he deserved the win.
oh hek YEAH
I felt sad for shimada 8-dan after this match
Please make the manga review.
ok.
I'm gonna be the first dislike ☺️
...but why? Seems weird to publicly state your dislike if you're not gonna give context / feedback for why.
