Surinamese VILLAGE BBQ + BEER Tasting in a SUPERMARKET | Brownsweg, Suriname

- After over six hours of traveling from Albina earlier in the day, my boy Imro and I had finally arrived at Browns-Mountain in Brownsweg, Suriname. Come with us as we set off to have some out-of-this-world Surinamese barbecue and taste some beers in a local supermarket!

The largest lake in all of Suriname is located at Browns-Mountain. It’s a man-made lake that was created in 1964 after a dam was built. The lake filled up in just two months and covered an area that used to be forest, so there are a lot of dead trees sticking up out of the water!
The road to Brownsweg isn’t great but we set off to go have dinner in town. The food in Suriname is diverse and includes Javanaese, Indian, Chinese, Dutch, African, and native Surinamese food. There’s so much variety and it’s all super tasty!
On our way down the muddy, dirt road, we spotted a boa winding its way in the darkness. There’s never-ending wildlife in Suriname! After arriving in Brownsweg, we looked for a restaurant selling barbecue. We found a small hut-like restaurant selling some. It was super authentic village life!
My meal was chicken with peanut sauce, and fries topped with mayo and ketchup. The chicken had a very Indonesian flavor. The chicken was amazing and the peanut sauce was incredible. It was smoky, with a charred flavor and crispy skin. I loved how fresh it was! It was like sweet and sour chicken.
The fries were amazing with the peanut sauce as well. I couldn’t stop eating it! The meal was like Southern barbecue with an Indonesian twist. The only bad part is that it was hotter inside than outside!
From there, I wanted to find some beer. There are lots of different ones, including varieties from France and a local Parbo bier. We got a Parbo and some Atlas beers. We bought six in total! They came to a little under $8 USD. We tried them in the supermarket!
We started with the Atlas Ultra Strong, which is 14% alcohol. It had a different color and was OK. It was very strong and wasn’t my favorite. The Parbo 5% was a perfect palate cleanser after the Atlas Ultra Strong. The Atlas 12% was better than the 14% but still not good. I could feel them already!
The Chiller Lime was like a lime juice and was another nice palate cleanser. Then we tried the Atlas 8.5%, which was the best. It was light and really nice.
I checked out some of the clothing in the supermarket, which included camouflage hats and shoes. You can even buy a machete! There were also garments that people wrap around their head or neck, and women wear as a skirt.
The guy cut me a meter and a half. It only cost me $3 USD. It would be great for protecting my neck from the sun! Meanwhile, we gave away the rest of our beer. We didn’t need the rest of it.
I learned that there are a whopping 8,000 supermarkets in Suriname and that they’re mostly run by the local Chinese community. They’re everywhere!

Blimey....Indian, Chinese, Indonesian.....looks and sounds great...plus I speak a bit of Dutch - worked years ago for the (West) German Railway Dining-Car company on trains to Amsterdam and Hoek van Holland and picked up a bit of the language - later on I had a Belgian girlfriend from Brugge and learned a bit more. Mind you, I think the Surinamese climate would probably kill me. Cheers, en dank u wel, Keith (Brit in Berlin/Engelsman in Berlijn)..
Mix the Indian/Chinese/Indonesian with African/Creole and you have one of the most richly diverse cultures in the world. The food is amazing, taking the taste of all the different cuisines, but still using the local ingredients to make it unique. If you can handle the heat, it is definitely worth a visit!

I still have yet to see native Surinamese food and African I’m honestly very disappointed. I am very proud of the diversity of my country but I feel like you are focusing too much on the Asian influences. I think it should a bit of each not 75% Chinese 20 Indonesian and %3 Indian and 2%African. 🤷🏾♀️ if that’s the case you might as well go to each separate influences country and vlog there. Either way I’m very happy that you are showcasing Suriname because a lot of people lack information on Suriname.

@@ellaboompje6596 Hij heeft BBQ gegeten in Brownsweg. Dat was zeker niet van een chinees of indo. Hij had ook pepre watra gegeten in een van de andere videos. Maar hij is ook afhankelijk van zijn gids, en zijn smaak.
Ik ben het met je eens , de creoolse keuken was totaal niet aan orde , blijkbaar niet interssant genoeg , jammer maar ja , je ziet dat zijn voorkeur uitgaat naar Javaans eten

How did Imro bring you to a Roti Shop that doesn’t sell Roties, cause there’s a very decent Roti shop a few 100 meter apart. I know your no longer in the country, cause you shot the videos in july, but I really hope Imro brought you to an Surinamese-African kitchen, cause a whole lot people are thinking that your avoiding the black culture in Suriname. Btw why didn’t Imro bring the beer back to stong island, to consume there, better safe then sorry...
Other then that, I do enjoy your videos and how your putting Suriname on the culinary map, hope we get more food bloggers, but I do suggest a better tour guide.

David is allang weg. Hij was maar voor 3 dgn in Suriname. Hij plaatst gewoon z'n videos op youtube nu.
Imro moet gewoon meer gaan lezen over z'n land, zodat hij minder foutieve zaken overdraagt.
@@Jenny-dj9qs nouja, het is ook een beetje anders. David wilt alles in 1 take. Imro moet alles snel uitleggen. Dan maakt David hier een samenvatting van en het interesseert hem totaal niet of hij correct herhaalt wat imro zei. Ikzelf heb een dag gelopen met David. Je legt hem wat uit, wat hij zich herinnert herhaalt hij, als je hem later wijst dat je het het andere uit hebt gelegd, zegt hij: does not matter...people wont notice. En uit beschaafdheid ga je daar vervolgens in mee. (wat weet jij als non-youtube expert) Imro was tevens niet de gids die het werk zou doen. Echter een andere gids liet ons in de steek, camera-vrees. Ik snap de aanvallen niet zo op Imro. Hij wist dat zijn engels niet zo goed was. Het was hoogseizoen, geen andere gids beschikbaar. Imro heeft zijn best gedaan en het geprobeerd. Alle alcohol is David zijn idee, niet van Imro. Imro vond het een beetje twijfelachtig. David was hier op uitnodiging van ons, wij hebben voor alle kosten opgedraaid. Het zijn leuke beelden geworden, daarbij hebben wij geleerd voor de volgende keer hoe we het beter moeten aanpakken. Wij zijn een touroperator, geen mediahuis, wij hebben teveel vertrouwen en onwetendheid gehad in David. Wij hebben de videos niet op voorhand gezien. Maar wees gerust. Er komen meer vloggers, meer informatie en betere filmpjes de komende tijd.
Maar ik kan er in meegaan, dat er fouten zijn gemaakt. Maar ik zie het echt als een leerweg ook voor andere gidsen, en voor vloggers die komen naar Suriname. Juiste informatie is belangrijk.
