Joan Sutherland
RIP
She had the greatest voice God ever gave a singer; no one came close. There were many brilliant and beautiful soprano voices, but no one could do what she could, consistently, for over 30 years. I listen to her every day; she brings me such joy and thrills me like no other. May she sing with the angels forever.
I saw her live at the Met in New York....1968. Tears and goosebumps, it was perfection for me. I treasure the experience.
+jjustie Lucchesi You saw her in La Sonnambula in 1968? There is a video of Ah, non giunge that Sutherland sang live from the Met.
Thank you for this information. I was going through a divorce, and several things were stolen, the signed program from Sutherland was among these. I could not remember the Opera. jjustie
Lord, Thank you for my ears and enough intelligence to have appreciated the voice of your Angel Joan.
The retirement and passing of Joan Sutherland is indeed a sad chain of events. However, it was privileges to have heard one of the most beautiful voices of all time. Thank you, Dame Joan!
Joan Sutherland was one of the miracles of opera. Together with Luciano Pavarotti they were the absolute A Team of opera. Now that both are gone our world became poorer. We are lucky that they lived in an era where they could leave us so many souvenirs of their great art.
For me Joan Sutherland will live forever through her recordings. May she rest in peace and sing in Heaven to all those who are dear to us and no longer here with us.
Thank you for sharing. Dame Joan will be greatly missed, not a day goes by that I don't listen to her.
I had the great fortune of seeing her in some of her great roles at the Met Opera, as well as recitals in offbeat places like Brooklyn and Buffalo. There have been many great sopranos - I won't name them all here - but Sutherland's combination of rich sound and extraordinary agility; I never heard a voice like that before or since. Her son Adam gave a very moving tribute at this ceremony. I remember meeting Maestro Bonynge and Dame Joan backstage after a Don Giovanni - she was lovely and polite; he was extremely friendly and talkative! Both were delightful.
Most moving in this celebration was the tribute from a loving son to his much loved mother.
Her incomparable voice from the late 50's to the early 90's remained a light in the world of opera and song. Indeed "The Voice of the Century".
Thank you, Joan. I am among the many who have listened to you for decades every day and always will.
I was blessed to hear her live and on wonderful recordings. I feel that Dame Joan did so much for opera in many ways. First, she had a miraculous voice - clear and magical, almost effortless. And also, I thank her for bringing opera back to the world of music and art where it belongs. She was a true artist for art's sake. She brought the focus of opera back on the beauty of voice and music. Not on glamour, scandal, papparazzi and celebrity. Opera needed that.
I hear her for the first time when I was 6 years old even I am hard of hearing. I hear her close to the tv speaker. My mom saw me and she turns up louder. I fall in love with the opera ever since til now. I sang with sign language. I performed the recital quite a while. Now I am retired from sign singing.
Luciano Pavarotti called her the greatest voice he ever heard. When you listen to those greats who worked with her describe their experiences they almost go into a transcendental state of awe she was that great.
The most terrific musical performer who has lived in my lifetime, and probably in all time!
To all of the Prima Donna's fans, I, too, miss her dearly and listen to her daily.
This is astonishingly moving. I'm crying as I watch it. I saw Dame Joan (or Auntie Joan as we called her) once live and will never forget going to the stage door to get an autograoh and having a short conversation with her. Such an un-dva-ish diva. And such a fabulous, fabulous voice.
RIP, La Stupenda. You are the Prima Donna Assoluta of all time...the GREATEST opera singer in operatic history...
diana ventura mo
I still can´t Believe she´s gone, I miss her so.
That was wonderful and moving -- thank you very much! Simply jaw-dropping singing -- what a great, great artist.
May the world be happy for having her voice to listen.
Yes, I also sit here with tears running down my face. Dame Joan was a remarkable artist but also a remarkable human being according to the many accounts of those who worked with her. Thanks for posting this tribute.
It is very sad when "GREAT" voice's have to expire onto another plane. She is in my top TEN of GREAT female singer's globally. She lived a wonderful life and she was able to leave us with much to listen too. May she.....RIP
thank you for sharing with us the magic of Dame Joan one of the greatest diva ever
Most people know very little about the voice... she was the voice for me...
Thank you for sharing this tribute to the voice of the century
A remarkable voice R I P Joan
She was the greatest. Loved Adam's tribute to his mother.
10/11 is the anniversary of Dame Joan Sutherland passing.
This is the time to remember her by listening to her very beautiful voice.
There are but two sopranos, whose recordings I listen to on a regular basis. Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Each of them for different reasons. Sutherland's voice was incomparable.
They are my two favourites as well!
What stamina and flawless technique - she was 59 or 60 in this Lucia. I will not say she was the best singer ever, but few were her equal and non were better. You are profoundly missed; RIP, Dame Joan.
sgs92able I bet he's a Callas fan.
@Steve Soares why outsing?? They are not horses winning a race...the simple fact callas comes always in commentaries even about others singers says everything!!!she's in the mind of everyone when we talk about opera singers.it says it all!
R.I.P. I miss you very much.
Thank you Joan for all the recording you have made for posterity,a big thank you to Richard for her training and support and enduring a life with a diva
Better late than never. Thank you very much for having posted this video and left it her.
One thing and another I was just today led to this video although I have been with youtube since it began.
In any case I am very grateful for the opportunity to have seen this tribute to one of the world's and opera's greatest singers of any century.
I love Australia and its people and what this reminded me of was that Dame Joan was in every sense the best of what Australians are. It is wonderful to know that she in her personal life remained down to earth.
I had the uncanny good fortune to meet her personally at a performance of the opera Giulio Cesare with Jennifer Larmore singing Cleopatra at Montreux.
It was an odd thought that occurred to me as I was seated quite near to Dame Joan and her husband Richard. I wondered what it was like for her to listen to this young woman sing the part of Cleopatra which she herself had sung so brilliantly. When we met at the interval I did not ask this question :-) However she was charming, gracious and appreciative.
Again thank you for this video which I'd have never otherwise had the opportunity to see.
There was nor ever will be another like her. Her voice was glorious. RIP
Thank you for uploading this wonderful tribute to Dame Joan. As a matter of interest Kenneth Neate was her Edgardo in the famous 1959 Lucia premiere and this is a memory he treasured all his life.
Thank you. Very moving and memorable.
He deeply loved her.As you know only too well, no Bonynge,No Joan as we knew her.For that we will always be in his debt.We can only consider ourselves extremely lucky to have lived throught the Sutherland/Bonynge era.
I count myself VERY lucky to have worked at Covent Garden when her career was at it's height, and to have been there whn she eventually retired.
Just to show you what she was like.I was in Bond Street about 7 years after her retirement, and her familiar voice called my name!
That's just so sweet. That's just so her!
Tribute to a wonderful woman, a wonderful artist. It was her voice that introduced me to the awesome glories of bel canto as a teenager. I taught myself to sing a whole-step trill by listening to her sing those final seconds of "Caro Nome" where Gilda trills as she walks offstage. Ah, the power of music!!! How deprived we humans would be without it!!! Requiescat in pace.
A most deserved homage to one of the greatest ever ( if not THE greatest)
“Nobody ever sang so high, so fast, so loud and ....so beautiful”
I just found this by listening to some of her arias for my personal studies. She is besides Callas my favourite singer and private teacher. A wonderful service here. God bless her, she came with an angel's voice and heart.
My late mother loved her music
Blow the wind southerly
May God bless you Dame Joan, especially for the glorious beauty you brought to the world with your wonderfully beautiful voice. With your passing and Beverly Sills 3 years before you, the operatic world is far poorer for all your experience, wisdom and encouragement that you so generously passed on to aspiring singers following in your footsteps. A salute la Stupenda. Ciao.
She was great .
Minha primeira ópera, Maria Stuarda, era com ela. Foi desde ali e continua sendo minha diva maior. Sutherland grande voz e artista.
Thank You so much for posting this,as we here in the UK that so loved Joan would not have had a chance to see it otherwise.
A Paradox p
Adam did a beautiful job with the eulogy.....Rest in Peace La Stupenda, you will never be forgotten xxx deepest sympathies to Meastro Bonynge, Adam, Helen and Joan's grandchildren at this very difficult time.
La Stupenda, Dame Joan Sutherland, "Voice of the Century"...
Tears go down my eyes as I have missed you so much.
Prima Donna Assoluta of all time.
Gran Dama, que descanse en paz.
I heard her in latest times of her brilliant career in Barcelona, Lucia with Alfredo Kraus and Norma!! She did memorable performances and had a friendship relation with Montserrat Caballé, la Superba !
Thank you, thank you for this marvelous sharing...Unforgettably!
Oh my, thank you SO much for this!!!!
Fantasic use of La Traviata and Nabucco. RIP Dame Joan.
Richard Bonynge did not "endure" a life with a diva. First of all, Joan was about the furthest thing from a typical "Diva". She was unpretentious and unassuming - she connected with all of those around her no matter their station. But I certainly agree with your thanks to Richard. He deserves much credit for Joan's (it bothers me to be as familiar as calling her "Joan") success. And I also agree with your comment about Joan's recordings. She remains the single most recorded opera singer ever!
17 People who must dislike life so very much.......they are missing out..sad
QUE MARAVILLA......GENIAAAAAA....
Hi Leo,
Thank you very much for sharing an incredible event with us.
I hope you have had a great Christmas and wishing you a wonderful year 2011.
Best regards
Satoko
What a loss to opera and the world, this gentle and very funny wonderful opera singer. Her bel canto including Lucretia Borgia was sublime.
my master, thanks very much!!
@fairlytaleofnewyork oh thanks! All the best to you too!
Thanks for uploading this memorial. I come to an awareness of Opera, as many others, from the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles. I had known of La Stupenda, but not what, who or why she was so important to Opera and further to voice appreciation. I am aware enough to know that modern musicions, voicalists and productions owe a great deal to artists (artiste) as she, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, etc. for bringing Opera to wider audiance. The partnership between she and Richard Bonygne bought a change from Bel Canto works being "Butterfly" works to The grand works that every soprano wishes to attempt. Some Will succeed. Many will not...
By the by, it might be nice to return to "Butterfly" productions in voice and staging if we can avoid being thumped over the head with The Message of operatic storylines at the expence of the music and voice...
Either that or I need to avoid rabbit hole of UA-cams binging.
Love Joan Sutherland
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sang at the Prince of Wales wedding, not Dame Joan.🌹
Awww so sweet at 01:01:18

Eine der besten Stimme ever. Als Darstellerin unbegabt.
Vi komner alle til å bli for gamle for tiden. Med Joan Sutherland forstår vi hvor naturlige vi er alle sammen..
Hi ,i do not wish to turn this into a debate,i know of peoples close to both of them, apparently (i repeat what i was told )she did not treated him very kindly ,but like Toscanini and Callas they had a unique personality,i care more about the artist ,personal life belongs to them, even though we take interest in their life ,again she gave us so much to cherish ,we are blessed
Dear Ole,
Please don't feel bad in her calling her Joan,as you say she was the most un#diva like diva that there ever was.She had a wicked and at times racous sense of humour.Always remembered names(including mine)and was kind and intuitive.Richard is actually quite a shy and retiring person, but was the one that wore the trousers! It was a true partnership, and all the operas Richard found and produced,he did out of love for Joan and her voice,in that order.Richard did not(as you say) endure Joan
@magicmonkichi You'e welcome, the same happens to me :-/
We went and had a coffee, and she was more interested in me and what I was doing than what she was(althought I did pump her!lol)
So Ole,go on calling her Joan, as I am sure Joan would be pleased to hear you do so!
Whilst we can hear her voice she cannot be said truly to have passed on.
ERA UNA DIOSA......ES UNA DIOSA.........Y POR ESO SE PUEDE HACER UNA COSA PARECIDA Y MAS QUE SE HARAN...........JOAN SUTHERLAND....TENIA LA CORONA MAS CODICIADA DEL PLANETA.........LA CORONA DE QUIEN LA TIENE SIN QUE NADIE SE LA PONGA.....SIMPLEMENTE NACIO CON ELLA.....LA CORONA DEL PODER HUMANO.........MAS BRILLANTE QUE TODOS LOS DIAMANTES....RUBIES Y ZAFIROS Y OPALOS......TENIA LA CORONA DEL DEDO DE LOS DIOSES.......LA CORONA DEL SER ESPECIAL Y UNICO........LA QUE SOLO PODIA LLEVAR ELLA...
@Ole Nielson Actually I believe Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau holds that honour.
You are most welcome
I cannot say I like the bust of Joan on the grave, but obviously her family do.
Luckily Richard Bonynge is still with us (and active) at 83.
I presume the grave on the left is for him,it has lettering but I cannot read it.
You may have seen this?
Apologies if you have.

I thought it is the other way around.
There's no place like home...Farewell to La Stupenda!
Where was Richard?
Conducting a ballet in Cuba I think.
@ yortko1. Dieskau did most of those lieders on record. That's not opera. Dieskau did not sing all those complete live operas as Dame Joan's did. Many of those live operas were recorded. Dame Joan from 1952-1989 are a lot of recorded complete live and studio operas well over 200 Lucia alone. Dieskau did not sing as much as 4 times a week like dear Joan did. He may sing one concert every few weeks.
This is the only way the Lucrecia B. should be sung. Dame Joan's acting is better than Maria C. She sings the coloratura with extra power to express her horror and grief. La Stupenda will live forever through her recordings. Dame Joan Sutherland will be remember as the most supreme prima donna assoluta.
The voice was beautiful, but the diction left much to be desired. Sometimes, I had to wonder in which language she was singing. To Joan, the words were simply not important. The sound was. Period
jc2971 My god why do people always find something to pick at.......you silly person......Sad.
