What a great video! We have become regular visitors to this area for the last 3-4 years and love it. Never knew about the history of the coastal dune lakes!
Oh how things have changed since I was a Gulf coast resident back in the early 80's until the spring break madness sent me packing to the mountains out west, then California showed up. So far living in the middle of nowhere Appalachian mountains is rather peaceful. Big beach fires at Grayton beach going in circles on a float in the pond if you caught the tide just right and the glowing gators eyes when a vehicle would turn around at the outflow. People thought we were crazy living year round at the beach
Great video and descriptions. It’s my understanding that it’s not a fresh water lake. It may have been one years ago. There are fresh water streams that feed into the lake. The water is brackish that is a combination of salt and fresh as you mentioned after the opening. The tannin comes mostly from leaves, pine needles decaying organic matter as the streams meander towards the lake. It is beautiful to watch as the tides change daily and the gulf and lake take turns pushing and yielding to each other during the changing of high/low tide.
I like your videos, but it is ironic how you describe the rarity of coastal dune lakes, but looking at that 30A lakes compared to the other countries ours seem less extraordinary with all the development. But that’s America for ya
Remarkable video! Thank you!

Staying in Santa Rosa for the 1st time ever with my family in May. This looks spectacular!

yes! i believe you are 100% correct saying that it's brackish... we are SOOOOO lucky to have these treasures in our community!
Thank you for your correction. Some have sold the pristine bioregion down the river unfortunately.
The event of “outfall” has more factors than just being full. Check the charting.
