During our time at CES 2023 in Las Vegas all the way back in January, the ASUS Chromebook CM14 Flip showed up in a pretty unexpected fashion. As it turned out, this new Chromebook wasn’t just showcased by ASUS, but by MediaTek in their booth as well. While we knew devices with the new Kompanio 520 were on the way, we had no idea we'd see this one in the flesh and looking back at my reaction to it back then, I was pretty excited to be reacquainted with a $279 Chromebook that I had pretty high hopes for.
Right off the bat, the ASUS Chromebook CM14 Flip presents a pretty interesting combo of features. It's inexpensive without needing to be on sale, it's super-thin, lightweight, and promises very long battery life: quoted at 14 hours by ASUS. There's a 1080p 14-inch screen that hits 250 nits, a nice port selection, and a rigid build quality that is a bit unexpected for this price range. But does it hold up 8 months later?

Dude! No need to apologize about your filming location, looks great and we are all here for the content. :)
At sub $200, the attractiveness of that model really increases. As much as I love devices like the Duet. If you're working on a couch or in bed, you really need a clamshell. A convertible one is even better. Also, I never mind a bit of background noise when the content is as good as yours.
I been waiting for your review
Great review! Bummer about no backlit keys, but it is an entry level model. And... no worries about the background noise, lol.
I love Chromebooks
Thanks Much! yes sir
The ASUS Chromebook CM14 Flip is a game-change. The versatility of its 360° hinge, combined with robust performance of mediatek chip, makes it a dream come true for both work and play.
Waiting for the 8/128 GIG configuration hopefully including the pen!
This might be the best Chromebook that I've ever seen since the Duet
Robby, as always, thanks for a great review and for scouting the wild. Looks like the 8/128 version with USI 2.0 stylus is the CM1402F compared to this one which is the CM1402C. ASUS web site comparison shows the F version with a touch screen, glossy display, 250 nits compared to 220 nits, anti-glare, non-touch display in this C version and coming in a tad heavier at 3.44 lbs instead of 3.2 lbs. Also, the finish feel that Robby described seems to be some new kind of an anti-bacterial coating. I am currently looking for a replacement for my trusty Samsung Chromebook Plus which just AUE'd, but unfortunately this one and the F version won't completely fit the bill as they are not 3:2 aspect ratio and don't have a metal case. Any replacement recommendations under $500 would be welcome, as it's not easy to screen (pardon the pun) for 3:2 displays.
Please show some hardware stats, some benchmarks? These are what needed in review
This seems like a really nice entry level device.
Asus is notorious for cost cutting any way they can while maxing out their price. There are also persistent design flaws. But of course, at this price point, it's hard to ask for too much. It's a basic chromebook with a few nice features. Appreciate your honest review.
I gotta say yeah, this model is overpriced on walmart. The Lenovo Slim 3 Chromebook is $320 in bestbuy, but you can get it on sale at $169 and it's all around the same kind of specs. There are new Asus models like the Asus Zenbook 14 (there are old models like the one I'm typing in) that are very cheap compared to all competitors. You can find the new Asus Zenbook on sales for 900 bucks while all other competitors are like 2k for the same specs. You just can't say this company maxes out prices *cough APPLE cough*
Perfect for students! Lightweight, long battery life, and easy to use. Plus, super affordable with the performance of the mediatk komp
I just bought this model and color and compared to the other chromebooks that I have used this one is a bang for the buck
does it have a stylus?
No no the one from Walmart
Please review this Chromebook I really need to know the ins and outs of this particular device
Looks fantastic - just ordered this for $160 as a refurb on woot
Arrived and I love it - perfect screen for the money
It features the mediatek kompanio 520 processor. It's a true workhorse with eight cores clocked at 2.05 GHz
Make a video on how to get the most out of the Pixel Fold... like using the Samsung Browser with zoom out, 180° rotation, Hacker's Keyboard for undo...
Please review the newer one with AMD Ryzen 3, 8 GB RAM and 128 SSD. It also has a backlit keyboard. $279 on holiday sale at Best Buy. I'm trying one, and it seems quite different from the machine you have. No flex on bottom part, really solid. No bottom speakers, camera privacy slide, etc,
Pricing is Amazing these days - Great Machine for the affordable category..
It was an amazing video! Since I'm currently a windows 10 user and my system is kinda getting old, what kind of chromebook would you suggest that I could go with? I want to do programming (no gaming) on it and it needs to have nominal performance while it also needs to be cheap (around 300 USD-450 USD). What chromebook would you recommend for this?
Also could you make a video on performance of chromebooks with programming?
I'm waiting for HP to update their 14" 16:10 Chromebook 14c with a brighter display. I've probably stopped by my local BestBuy 6 times in the past few months to look at the current model. Every time I'm disappointed by the 250 nit screen brightness.
Yeah once you go to that ratio, it's very hard to go back. I can't believe this years Acer 714 went away from that. My next one will have to have that ratio.
@@ZackMorris1 The last 2 Acer 714's are 16:10. The three 713's that preceded it were 3:2. Just a heads-up.
@@TheChromeCastPodcast sorry yeah I meant 3:2, it's what I have on my Acer 713
Thanks for the video suga pop ❤
Thinking of buying Asus for my kids, any advise if this can handle Elgato HD60S?
I just picked up this chromebook from Walmart, I was a little disappointed that it did not have the stylus with it like it shows on the Asus website. My question is, do you know if a USI stylus will work on this model if so what stylus would you recommend for normal writing and such?
did you find a stylus for it ? if so which one? i just got the chromebook yesterday
Wow, the Asus CM14 looks like a great student Chromebook. Anyone know if the 4GB RAM version with the Kompanio 520 is enough for multitasking?
I've had two pretty 'mini' Asus models over the years that I LOVED. First the Eee PC 901 (2009) then the Chromebook Flip C100 Chromebook (2015). I really liked that Asus initially came in with small form factor models. Even 11.6 feels 'big' to me for an everyday chuck in your bag machine. (I have a Windows Surface laptop for 'big' stuff). I just want a cute little Chromebook for basics. I'd appreciate it if you could look into and review some of the smallest form factor Chromebooks. (I'm not sold on detachables/tablets yet). I just wish I could keep upgrading the Chrome OS on my C100 forever. 😊
I have a C424 like this. I bought it at Walmart. I still don’t know what to do with it.
It probably is a nice Chromebook, but after using a Lenovo with the Mediatek 520 for a month, I can tell you they are slow. I loved on my old Chromebooks the instant start, and speed I got with the older Intel processors, even those from 6 years ago. The 520 is nowhere close to those. With the 520 I have to wait to start, wait to open windows, wait for updates, etc. They are slow!
Whoa, 15 hours of battery life? Sign me up! This CM14 seems like a productivity beast with those specs
I never save anything on my pc, can an external drive be connected to a Chromebook? I'm looking at getting one in the near future.
Can it run games?
But where is the black one?
dose this divice has a pin with it? or have to buy an extra pin?
Is there any good Chromebooks that have come out in 2023?
I just bought this. Dont need it for anything heavy duty, but unfortunately I could only get the 4Gb RAM model. Does anyone know if this upgradeable?
Great video as usual, I have been following your channel for awhile dreading this day. My 2015 Pixel Chromebook is expired and now on its last leg, I love this device. With all the devices on the market, what do you recommend as a replacement, top of the line Dragonfly is nice but very expensive?
Acer 714 2023. 13th Gen I5 8gb ram 256 storage. I got one and absolutely love it. I have yet to run into something it can't handle. I've even been able to use Lumafusion to edit videos on it. It has become my daily driver instead of an msi crosshair I had decked out.
@@bob8409so hard to buy!
@@bob8409 Acer 714 has been pretty fantastic. I'm just now starting my review, and as I expected, I love it. It's just over $500 right now at Best Buy, too!
is this IPS LED?
Does anyone know where i can get the stylus or even its reference?
is this an lcd or led screen? i am still using my chromebook flip c302 which has an led screen and its amazing and I am afraid to go back to an lcd one. I recently saw an acer chromebook 14, last years model and the screen was just horrible and it was lcd, such bad colors and viewing angles
Can you download music from it
What about gaming on it
At least they didn't add a numeric keypad on the side, but in this day and age I would never buy a laptop without biometric authentication as an option. That is a fingerprint reader or a high-quality camera based alternative. Another thing to note, Asus has crappy support in the US. Any problem and you'll end up having to spend a fortune mailing it to a service center, make sure you keep the box so you can avoid spending an extra $50 on a laptop mailing box.
2023 Acer 714 released at Best buy!
But rest in peace!
A formerly great Chromebook hobbled by downgrade in screen!
Cheers to the slow death of Chromebook! Cheers to
Can it run games like fortnite
im gonna hunt this man down when he is sleeping
So annoying.
Most Asus Chromebooks are not sold in germany at all, or only via mobile data carriers like O2 with extremely expensive and long running contracts.
yeah just looked for it in germany, no luck :(
That's not thin.

Them laptop locks are useless
This chromebook is a piece of crap. Screen is very fragile and poorly designed. Mine cracked after a month just picking it up.
Why do they bother making these shitty chromebooks, they just give Chromebooks a bad name, if you get anything like this with a weak af cpu then youll never want to use it.
And in the end, its still a crapbook
It is 199.00 on Amazon right now. Your review is awful. Yes I sale cars and I would starve if I made a presentation as you have shown me
