    "How funny, I never considered myself tough" is an INSANE lyric!!! The double meaning of her never considering herself a tough person when she was alive, along with the literal meaning of her FLESH being tough as she's being eaten... I lost my mind when I first heard it

    pls thoroughfare on its own is such a beautiful love song 😭 but knowing the whole story always gives me this looming feeling throughout the song 😭

      And knowing a bit more she didn't get into Isaiah's car, she was actually kidnapped

    So ethel cain ( the writer and singer) said that ethel ( the character) is not a trust worthy character for example that songs like thoughrfare are actually him kidnapping her but she saw it as a love story in her mind and tried to romanticize it cuz thats the only way she could cope

  • @derlis_whatever7033

    Thoroughfare sounds like a beautiful love song but it's told from Ethel's POV and she's an unreliable narrator. She was literally kidnapped lmao

      @chadstchad 5 місяців тому +3

      it IS a beautiful love song. yes with context it’s something else but as a singular song, it’s a love story. you’re reading ahead, you can’t skip the joy.

    • @lillipadss
      @lillipadss 5 місяців тому +8

      @@chadstchadi understand what you’re saying but is not a love song at all. From the very beginning it’s a romanticized version of her being thrown into his truck and her developing stockholm syndrome. Just listen to “In these motel rooms I started to see you differently”. Also the last lyrics are just so depressing and off putting even if you don’t know the full story yet.

    I remember seeing somewhere that Ethel said that she is an aspiring movie scorer. Honestly, this album makes me truly visualize that because everything about it is atmospheric to me. I think that for artists of all backgrounds, this album has something for each and everyone. From the songwriting to the visuals to the narrative, I personally was completely entranced by all of it.
    if you find yourself, compelled by the music and narrative of this album, I would totally recommend you listen to her EP Inbred. It’s shorter in size, so it’ll be easier to digest, but still brings the exact same level of quality and enjoyment that this album does.

    I believe Strangers draws a parallel between Isiah and Ethel's father. It has SO MANY layers, you know? I think Shes's ironic when saying she's wanna be loved by Isiah while he's cannibalizing her, but at the same time it mirrors how she still wanted to be loved by her father even though he abused her. She also shows some level of irony and disdain when asking if she makes him feel sick, and it culminates into the bridge where the dark humor and scorn turns into rage when Ethel screams on the top her lungs asking if she made him sick. At least after death she could let her rage out, you know? Not only towards Isiah but her father as well. It breaks my heart when I think about the parallel between she's talking about "being poison in the water" in Hard Times and literally food poisoning the man who killed her. This song is one of my favorites in the album because touching on a subject as dark and intense as cannibalism and still being so sensitive and nuanced is a feat of lyricism and performance. She's amazing.

      I just learned about Ethel cain (Hayden) because i saw a poster in Amsterdam and that led me into this deep dive. I am a huge fan of analysing poetry and lyrics and have multiple notebooks written full about it. But wow, what you said was beautiful and I didn’t even saw the parallel at first. Thanks for your comment hahah

    tbh this album didn't really do it for me on the first listen bc it's idk less catchy i guess compared to her previous EP, inbred (English is not my first language, so usually rhe production grabs me first before the lyrics do). but after several listens i loooooveeee this album so much 😭 i get to fully appreciate the songwriting the story and the production 😭

    Thank you so much for reacting to this album! It is such an emotional experience but so poignant. It’s so rare these days for an artist to take you on a journey in this way. This album means the world to me and was healing for me almost, as I can relate to at least some of the internal conflict that comes from religious trauma that is prevalent in the South.

    Love your videos so much! I have some requests for you :)
    1.) Shiver by Jónsi. Jónsi is the lead singer of an Icelandic post-rock band formed in ‘94 called Sigur Rós. They are known for their ethereal sounds and angelic vocals. On “Shiver” Jónsi partners with A.G. Cook (PC Music Founder , Charli XCX + SOPHIE collaborator) and creates one of the most immersive, personal, simultaneously freezing and blistering listening experiences I have ever had!
    2.) Desire, I Want to Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek. I love your review of her album “Pang”. Where Pang feels like a fairy tale wrapped in winds and waters, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You feels like ancient myth encased in earth and fire. I recommend listening to the deluxe version as the additional tracks contain a lot of poetry / spoken word, and just generally expand the universe of this album.
    3.) Fountain Baby by Amaarae. Amaarae is a Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter. She makes futuristic Afropop and is a sonic sorceress in her own right. This album is a lush, kaleidoscopic waterfall. The album is swirling with themes of passion, the dark and light sides of abundance, and the consequences of pining for glory.
    I love your videos and hope you have time to listen to these albums even if you’re not able to review them!

    ❤ Sher, I have some recs that I think you would love even if they're outside of your wheelhouse!
    First is The Glow Pt. 2 by The Microphones. A legendary post rock album steeped within experimentation and metaphor, both sonically and lyrically I believe there'd be a lot to dissect. Another recommendation from the band's next identity, that being A Crow Looked At Me by Mount Eerie, referred to many as the saddest album ever made and by me as the best. A dark and beautiful stripped back acoustic record dealing with Phil Elverum's (the vocalist's) late wife, both direct and rich in its writing.
    Next is from my favourite band OAT, Soundtracks for the Blind by Swans. This is a monster of an album, clocking in at 2 hours and 20 minutes, and I'd understand anyone's apprehension when choosing to listen to it, but there's a reason for it's acclaim and status as one of the most diverse, epic and misanthropic albums ever put to record. It's a journey through a soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist, traversing expansive post rock tracks, drone, sound collage, punk rock, no wave, and at one point even dance. If you didn't want to react to the entire thing, you absolutely NEED to listen to the tracks Helpless Child and The Sound, two of the most beloved tracks from the band and some of my most streamed songs despite their respective 15 minute runtime.
    I've loved your vids for a while now, keep it up!
