    I got a great tip for doing a custom white balance from the book "Exploring Ultraviolet Photography" by David Prutchi. I picked up a cutoff piece of ptfe or Teflon. I take a picture of this piece of Teflon using whatever lens and filter I'm using, then use that to do the custom white balance. It seems to work on my equipment for both near UV and IR. Give it a try. I'm still truly a beginner in UV/IR photography, but this simple technique helped me get some interesting jpeg files. (I'd like to recommend snapping a few pics with your modified camera of any used car you might be interested in buying. In UV or IR you can spot replaced quarter panels in an instant.) I haven't yet graduated to experimenting with raw files yet. I'm still watching videos, like yours, to learn as much as I can.

    I bought a brand new Sony a6000 and after confirming that it worked properly I shipped it straight to LifePixel for a Full Spectrum conversion. I also bought a set of filters from LifePixel at the same time. After 2 years of off & on shooting, I'm still learning how to post process the images but I can say that the Full Spectrum conversion is, in my opinion, the best conversion because it doesn't limit you to just one spectrum (nm) and you can use it as a normal camera with the proper LifePixel filter. I chose a mirrorless camera to convert because it eliminates the focusing difference. Another PRO to having an IR camera is the fact that you can shoot mid-day with harsh light whereas with a normal camera you would normally shoot during the golden hours of early morning and late afternoon. I highly recommend LifePixel for your conversion and filters. Note: Buy a set of filters for the largest lens you plan to use and then buy a step-up ring for each lens. That will save you from buying multiple sets of filters.

    Great video. I worked with Daniel as well last year and love my full spectrum. I purchased one direct from them Micro 4/3. (Already converted new) Love the results. Would imagine your full frame has its advantages in this venture. Considering doing a Full frame in the near future as well... regarding your question on what I use. Using a hot filter on a full spectrum camera gives you normal exposed as if you still have the original filter on. Then when you want to be creative change the filter to any of the other choices you like (for IR). I did start out taking only RAW photos and then going thru the Lightroom conversions (seems harder than it should). Ended up enjoying sharing and printing my work with the custom white balance using just JPEG.(much easier work flow with some editing still possible).

    Love you’re videos. I’m having my Nikon P1000 converted to full spectrum. The reason is because of the Zoom capabilities + RAW+ 4K and my goal is to cut out atmospheric haze when shooting at or near the Cameras max zoom. So I was drawn to your review of the Nikon P1000 and eagerly await the full review. I have also subscribed because I enjoy your clear honest instruction and opinions. Again this video on Infrared is another reason that I’m glad I found your channel, my new found interest in Infrared (IR). My converted camera should be back in a week, it’s my first quality camera and I’m enjoying it immensely. Along with a range of IR filters I have also purchased a UV/IR cut filter so that I can still use the camera for shooting the normal visible light spectrum but now I will have the flexibility and option of IR photography as well.

    This was an interesting video. I had a refurbished Nikon D7000 converted to 590 nm IR. At first, I was put off at having to use LiveView, but I adapted very quickly. You got great results in IR even with snowy scenes, so perhaps I gave up to easily.

    bought a converted D200 for $170. fun & artistic for sure. had to mark focus offsets on lenses as it doesn't have liveview.
    would love a full spectrum body, too.

    FYI(also) I was the second person to convert a Z7 and Vincent Versace was the first. My z7(mirrorless) has horrendous horizontal banding due to my processing technique. They were not aware of the issue(KolariVision wrote an article about a few weeks earlier. I had LifePixel restore the camera back to its original state and sold it. I ended up using a Nikon D850 converted to nm550.

    i'd also add, it's more-(Safer)? to do it if you own more than a single camera body. IE: if you have two different cameras. it's a safer "bet" to have the least common used one converted if you're still "unsure"

    Just bought a converted nikon d5100 from life pixel . I chose full spectrum as I work with maps and remote sensing but love the creative side of controlling lightbands on the spectrum for art prints! I need Nikon capture soon. I haven’t figured out how to get the best white balance yet. Still experimenting

    LifePixel are great. I have converted two of my old Nikons (D1X and D200) plus a used Olympus OMD E-10. It gives you the ability to shoot during the middle of the day when other photographers don't want to shoot in harsh mid day light. Nice video.

    I created a custom camera profile with a minus value of white balance matrices. This seems to be the only way for Adobe ACR and Lightroom to get you negative values on infrared raw files. I have been converting and farting around with digital SLR cameras since 2006. Live view totally changed the game for infrared. You’re right, mirrorless is the best for infrared. I currently use a Sony A7 full spectrum with a clip in STC Optics 560nm, and a D800 with a life pixel Hyper Color filter. You can create a custom WB preset on both of these cameras, so you can still see a great false color rendition on screen.

    For those who have a Nikon camera (and I suspect Sony, Canon and others would be the same with their respective OEM software) you can use the new NX studio to do your white balancing for IR, and then export the file as a TIF and import into LR or Photoshop to work with it. I found if you're using Adobe, it's better to just use Photoshop and bypass Lightroom alltogether unless you're just using it for organizational purposes, but Photoshop has the full range of tools (like channel swapping) and does a better job overall. Even LifePixel (the person who does the seminars) recommends Photoshop as LR is limited in many ways, especailly when it comes to WB because LR only deals with visible light spectrum so that's one reason it has a hard time white balancing IR images, although with some playing around, you could probably get close, but for Nikon cameras at least, I found the NX Studio to work much better and more accurately (or you can use Photoshop as well to do your WB).

    I'm getting tickled from time to time to get my very old pentax k10 converted into unfiltered sensor. I wouldn't restrict my K5 IIs/K1 to "weird photos" only :-) (K5IIs still on duty for action photo (planes, sport) cause the frame rate of my superb K1 is sooooo slooooow).
    I like your very careful way. Nothing is never imposed, rather nicely suggested, proposed.

    hi you mentioned about the focusing issue but you did not explain what to do to fix it. this is exactly my problem. after I removed the IR filter of the sensor, my camera can not focus the near objects anymore. I mean why?! I only removed a thin glass! why it can not focus anymore ?! even not manually. so sad. what should I do to fix this?

    • @danc2014
      @danc2014 3 місяці тому

      When you remove the filter you now get a full spectrum light, i.e. ir and uv with the visible. Your camera cannot focus on all the spectrum at once. Like having 3 people talk at once. You thus need to put a filter to block some of the unwanted light. Uv ir even a visible filter. Thus you heard to use live view as the markings on the lenses will be off too. 10 feet is now 8 feet in ir light. Manual focus may be needed.

      It depends on what you expect from your images. I have used this for astrophotography with wonderful results, but I am using a long shutter speed, which you may or may not be satisfied with. It would be an interesting experiment to see what I can do in a dark room - I'll add it to my list. In the meantime, definitely talk to the folks at LifePixel - they were really helpful in answering all of my questions.

    • @LeighAndRaymond
      @LeighAndRaymond  5 років тому +1

      Sort of. You're opening the camera to be sensitive to everything that the sensor can capture. You could then add a filter to restrict the full spectrum camera to perform exactly as a D810a.A D810a is not full spectrum, but it includes more of the spectrum than a conventional D810.

  • @extx

    I would consider doing this only if I had a spare D810 laying about. Given that I don't it's not happening.
