Pheno also causes pancreatitis and my dog ended up in ICU, so monitor carefully the dose.
We reduced the pheno and added Pexion which has hardly any side effects with good quality CBD oil.
Use a pill crusher to grind the tabs and we mix it with a little peanut butter and the CBD in a teaspoon.
    He loves it.

My tiny chihuahua and best buddie for 15 years was on this medication for his seizures he had from birth. Unlike most medications this one had no adverse side effects and he lived a long life I know because of this med. I would dip the pill in coconut oil and gently slip it down his throat or coat it in a piece of meat. THe oil helped his coat and mental alertness till his peaceful last breath. Im very grateful to my vet for prescribing this for him.

@@itsnotfunny8257 Vet gave him 15mg tabs that I cut in half for twice a day. He weighed only approx. 5lbs. On rare occasions he might seize or I could sense he was going to so I would give him a quick dose and it would stop seizure. Pill would also help his tummy feel calm enough to eat which always helped. I also had a tube of High-Calorie Dietary Supplement like Tomlyn Nutri-Cal (a walmart item but there are many out there)as well for those unexpected times.I cooked chicken for him to add to his food and starting giving him coconut oil (his coat and cognition was great) to assure he ate well. I know this would be harder for a large dog but good luck with your situation.

@OurPetsHealth is it normal for a pet to have trouble walking, or standing up on these medications? My dog has been very wobbly on her feet, and is constantly losing balance and falling over. She can't even climb stairs anymore. She's still eating, but seems really really drunk after I started giving this medicine.

Wow This brings back a lot of memories. I ended up having a dog that apparently has epilepsy. He was diagnosed at six months
They had him on pheno and it worked for a while, but what they didn't tell me. For some reason was that his blood work and his weight had to be monitored every six months. A year later, he ended up going into a pretty bad seizure episode. He was having a seizure at least every three minutes. He ended up in the doctor's office. And staying there for about five days. We really weren't sure what was gonna happen with him. So they got him in there, they got him under control, but he was still having about two or three a day up until the last day
So now he goes in for blood work every six months, and his weight is heavenly monitored. But he's no longer just one that medication
He's on about three different medications that he takes twice a day.
All of those medications fortunately, makes it so that he only has maybe one seizure a month.
Up until I had a dog with epilepsy, I didn't even know a dog could have epilepsy

I give milk thistle to support the liver for my Epi Chihuahua who is on Phenobarb. We have managed to achieve 100% seizure control on it, and in the 4 yrs he's been on it his liver has been fine, thankfully. In the beginning he was hungry, cried and whined, paced a lot and had ataxia and was wobbly and unable to jump etc, but within a week or two he was back to his usual self.

very often the side effects seen with phenobarbital settle down (and often completely disappear) after a dog has been on it for a few weeks. If not and they are causing problems then I would consider starting the next alternative (pexion is typically my other choice but clearly this needs to be decided by your vet) and then very slowly weaning off phenobarb. @@OurPetsHealth Thanks for the reply. My wife and I have a 3yr old Pit that started having seizures last February. Our vet diagnosed her with Idiopathic Epilepsy. She had no other medical conditions prior to the seizures. The vet started her on Keppra and while it helped extend the time between seizure events she was still having 2-3 times per month. So 64.8mg of Phenobarbital was added 2x daily and while that caused some side effects(loss of coordination and lethargy) it stopped her seizures from April to November(approx. 7 months). But during that time she developed pancreatitis in July. It was the only occurrence and she was treated with antibiotics. But in November when the seizures returned(she had 2 events in a span of 2 weeks) the Vet decided to double her Pheno dosage to 64.8mg 4x daily. Her liver enzymes were fine but her Pheno level was below therapeutic level. Shortly after her dosage increased(early December) she developed pancreatitis again. She was put on antibiotics for 10 days and recovered but after her last dosage of the amoxicilln on Sunday she got pancreatitis again last night. We have to wait until tomorrow to contact the vet but I don't know what else would be triggering the attacks.

....I spoil the crap out of this awesome, brilliant little guy, but seeing him in full grand mall seizures weekly makes me wonder if I’m doing the right thing. Is this the right drug? Have I given it long enough? Does he need more? Is it the grains in the food? Has he gotten into some poison before I found him? Idk. We’ve tested for feline leukemia, liver issues, etc... no answers. Just drubbing this baby and I see the side effects. He’s still wonderful. But I just wish there was more info to back up treatments and the “diagnosis”. It’s clearly still not well understood. We need more research!

Would you please let me know about the condition called Tremor syndrome or Shaky White dog syndrome. My 13 year old male yorkie had his first tremor at 1 and then had about two to three episodes a year, specifically during pressure drops in spring and fall or when he’s too excited. Six months ago these tremors became more frequent and he has been making continuous swallowing sounds along with the full body tremor. They last approximately an hour but he is lucid and needs me to hold him. We now have him on 3.5 milligrams twice a day and he’s been wobbly every other day. We are on day 5. Would this tremor condition be epilepsy and also his repeated swallowing and tremors has stopped. He’s extremely energetic, geriatric blood panel was done and he’s in perfect health blood wise. I’m worried because the vet suggested a brain tumour but he’s not acting sick. Very hungry as usual, still yelling at the fence and killing bugs at night. Please help.

Ideally there should be a 12 hour gap between giving the phenobarb but if it's a little shorter or longer then it's not so important if that fits in better with your schedule. You're right that we tend to reserve the diazepam for when there is a longer seizure that an indiviudal doesn't appear to be recovering from

He is now 1 yr old and his seizures keep getting worse. He was put on kepra September 5th or 6th bc he had 5 seizures in 17 mins. He has a seizure every sunday and thrusday except for today (Wednesday) he had one which was weird. He was abused and neglected before i got him. He has what his vet called a “grandma seizure”. Which she was very concerned about bc she said dogs normally dont start having those types of seizures until they are 3-5 years old and for him it started at roughly 8 1/2 months. Are there better medications that i should ask my vet about putting him on. His seizures get scary bc once they start if we dont give him more phenobarbital then he will start having cluster seizures. Hes my first dog with epilepsy and i really dont want to euthanize him.

I had also epilepsy during my younger days 4 attacks only in my lifetime, no meds now. Back to my dog, so I pity much my dog. First med is Tegretol 100mg per day according to body weight more than to months now no attacks but yesterday it was worse. They say effectivity of Tegretol is 7/10. Planning to suggest the vet Phenobarbital. Prayers for your dog.

How is the dog now? I would seek a consult from a holistic or even integrated vet

You'd have to ask a human doctor or pharmacist that one I'm afraid

My pup just started this medication on Friday evening. He had had a seizure that day around 450pm and started medication at 720pm then had another seizure at 930pm. My question is about "knuckling" my baby seems to be losing the ability to stand at times. You can see his front legs shake and sometimes buckle or even slide out from under him on tile. It's only the front ones but I'm really concerned. Is this something that should go away or something that's an emergency? I'm trying to get in with a specialist but I'll have to wait til the work week when they're in office.

Hi how is your dog now ? And how long did it take for his legs to go back to normal ? My dog is currently going through the same thing today is his first day on pheno and I’m trying to get all the info I can thanks

@@osopsnow4760 he still has it. I've talked to his vet and he said it's not something to really worry about unless we can do an MRI. Unfortunately that's not possible as I was quoted approximately four thousand dollars. The vet seemed to think it was related to the medicine. He's currently on phenobarbital and potassium bromide. We still haven't found the right mix because he still has about 4 or more seizures a month. He did get a 21 day stretch of no seizures shortly after starting the bromide but then he started having cluster seizures :/

this had no effect on my dog he still had seizures put him on cbd oil twice a day and not 1 in over 60 days compared to 3 every 15 days or so. I wasnt the expensive stuff it cost around £ 26.00 for 30 mil which at 6 drops twice a day is a bargain.
