How I use my Majacraft Mini Wool Combs

- Normally I use my Majacraft flick card to process my fleeces for spinning. But sometimes when I have a lot of waste from flicking, I will run the waste wool through my combs to get combed top.

I saw this video and bought the combs. They just came yesterday. Thanks for the instruction and for the fleece samples! They're SO soft! ❤
Thanks for letting me know Carrie - I hope you enjoy using them. I am going to be doing a segment on them today as I work thru my bag of scrap wool - the last of my stash until shearing day!
Combing is my favorite way to prep fiber! When I comb I always spread out the fibers on the comb as I comb, and when I diz it off. I usually get more usable fiber that way as the fiber will squish down on the base of the comb and not allow fibers to move freely. I really enjoyed watching you work, thank you for sharing!
Oh really? I don't dislike combing, it's just that I've been flicking for so long it really is my comfort zone. Thank you for the tip to further optimize my flicking waste, I'll try that next time I get time in the wool cave!
Great tutorial! Good to the last drop!
Hi Pam - thank you!
One of my favorite preps for spinning, especially for those fine fleeces! That looks like a nice set of combs
Thanks Cary - I can understand why you like combed top, it is such a nice spin.
Jen this was very helpful. At first I tried combing and that wasn’t the best. I was getting neps in my top. Then I went to carding and I kept having to clean the cards. Now I’ll try this.
Cool, I am so glad you found this helpful! I hope it works for you.
I'm just a beginner, but I think it would be more practical for me to comb first for the longer prime locks. And the "good" waste from combing should be carded for nice woolen yarn. The other waste can be used for batting or in the garden.
Hi Lyn - thanks for the comment, I think that sounds like a great strategy!
Love your "sacrilege". An idea to "save" more "waste" (and this is really only relevant to YOUR fleece or other fine fibers): Lash your "waste" onto to the FREE comb and just do one pass from free comb to the comb on the table , and then dizz from the stationary comb. This saves you one pass and reduces further waste. In my not-so-humble opinion....
Thank you for the tip, I'll give it a shot!
So I have used the waste from your wool flicked locks and carded them with hand cards and then make a slightly bumpy yarn that I make coasters from and spool pin doilies for my sewing machines.
I love that you use all the wool, that is awesome!
Thanks Jen. That was was wonderful. My husband bought me a majacraft blending board for Christmas. I just received it! Long time to wait. Any chance you would demo the blending board? I tried it but I’m sure I could improve my technique..thanks
Thanks Pat! I think that is a great idea, I am thinking I might reach out to one of my local friend and indie dyer as she does a lot more blending fiber than me, maybe she could teach me how to use on video? I'll figure something out for you. Nice present - and husband!
Pretty! Is this the waste from Georgiana’s wool?
Also, tangential question because I quilt: can you wash a quilt with a wool batt like you can one with a cotton batt?
You can wash like a superwash wool batts . I would think it would felt unless you hand wash your quilt or have a chemical treatment to make it superwash.
I think I agree with Candy, but let me ask Zeilingers what they recommend on the quilt batts, I'll get back to you on that.
