  • SPRAT recognizes three categories of technicians, each with different responsibilities, training, and levels of experience. ATS offers courses that, upon completion, qualify candidates for SPRAT certification according to the following designations:
Level I: person who is qualified and approved to perform basic rope access functions under the direct supervision of a level II or III technician; capable of conducting limited rescue from rope access systems.

Why must the descender be connected before doing the counterbalance? Why not make 2 connections to the victim, counterbalance, disconnect the croll, then lower him onto the short connection. It seems like this is an added step that is not needed? Please explain. Thanks

Thank you Dean. SPRAT opted to change to this method primarily for long line rescues such as wind turbines or buildings due to rope stretch. Placing them on descent eliminates the issues of releasing line elongation. An additional benefit was to ensure that no potential for impact fall is introduced during transitions. Having a potential impact introduced with both persons on a single line is a recognized hazard.
