Overwintering refers to the process of helping plants survive through the winter months, especially when they are not naturally adapted to cold or frost conditions. Some plants are sensitive to low temperatures and may need extra care to make it through the winter without dying. Overwintering can involve moving plants indoors, covering them, or applying specific care techniques to ensure they remain alive and healthy until spring.
Plants that may need overwintering:
Tropical and Subtropical Plants:
Examples: Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Banana plants, Mandevilla.
These plants can't tolerate frost and must be moved indoors or into a greenhouse to survive.
Tender Perennials:
Examples: Geraniums (Pelargonium), Dahlia, Begonias.
These plants die back to the ground in winter but can be dug up, stored, and replanted in the spring.
Herbs:
Examples: Basil, Rosemary, Lemon verbena.
Many herbs are sensitive to cold temperatures and need to be brought inside or protected.
Potted and Container Plants:
Examples: Citrus trees, Oleanders, Fuchsias.
Plants in pots are more vulnerable to cold because the roots can freeze more quickly than if they were in the ground.
Annuals Treated as Perennials (in colder climates):
Examples: Petunias, Impatiens.
Some annuals can be brought indoors and grown as perennials if given the right conditions.
Methods of Overwintering:
Bringing Indoors:
Plants can be moved into a greenhouse, garage, or indoors near a sunny window.
Mulching:
Applying a thick layer of mulch (e.g., straw, leaves, or bark) around plants to insulate them.
Wrapping or Covering:
Frost blankets, burlap, or even plastic can be used to cover outdoor plants for protection against frost.
Cutting Back and Storing:
Some plants like Dahlia and Canna lilies can be dug up, cut back, and stored as dormant tubers or bulbs in a cool, dry place until spring.
Overwintering helps protect non-hardy plants in climates where they would not survive outdoors naturally.
