This is actually a fairly easy choice. Do you: 1. Drive 150-200 miles or less for your daily commute? 2. Have the ability to recharge at home every day? 3. Rarely, if ever, take long road trips? If you answered yes to all of the above, then yeah an EV is for you.
@@ralfulrich6254 Yup you do have to eat the depreciation, which sucks. If you sometimes have to take a longer trip, then yeah keep an old ICE around. If you plan to keep the car for many years to get your money's worth out of it, it's good. You just have to understand all the quirks/annoyances of owning one and determine if it'll be a problem for your situation.
I love snowboarding but I'm too old and fat for it now so I stick to skiing as for EVs the long distance changing issue is not a problem even better if you get a Tesla but you only find that out once you've driven one for a while. Once you've discovered that you won't want to go back
Moved from ICE to EV 4 weeks ago. I charge my car using the outside 3 pin plug at 2KWH. I plug in and let Octopus Energy decide when to charge on the cheap rate £0.07p a KWH. Typically I get about 50% charge overnight which adds over 120 miles of charge on my standard range at 80% charged. This also only costs me £3 to do.
You are right to be worried about the rear wheel drive I have the lowest speck MG4 and you can push the back out on that in the winter so I'm looking for a second hand model Y AWD for next year
Agree with you, I bought an old'ish Audi A3 convertible, paid cash, my dog loves it, literally if I open the house front door he runs out and stands by the car door. I will get an EV, I'm not buying another ICE car, I'm thinking saving for a used Porsche Taycan in a year or two. Super good monthly loan Polestar options now mind, but still more than nothing.
If you look at a MEB platform car (like ID4, Enyaq, Q4) then a rear wheel drive car is totally fine. Been driving one for close to 3 years and have serious trouble getting the back to go out of line even on ice in the winter (proper winter). The electronic nannies are very aggressive. At the same time by friend has a AWD version of a MEB platform car and that thing is like a deer on ice, he managed to spin it during a turn doing something like 10mph.
Hearing this feedback from multiple people, actually so very interesting indeed. That said, I saw someone in a RWD Tesla Model Y having a mare getting out of their driveway in January. Thanks for the feedback!
I’m right where you were here now Euan. Except for the family car currently a 320D M Sport Touring. I have a BMW i3 which is great and home charging point all setup. Not sure whether to go new 320D MSport Touring / 330E MSport Touring (boot size an issue maybe?) / 520D MSport (too big?) or full EV like a EQC400 / Audi E-Tron even as prices have come down so much but worried they will continue to drop. Albeit would likely go PCP as you mentioned. Looked at Polestar and love it but too small for our needs. How’s the Tesla?
Yeah the PHEV BMW 3 series touring has a pretty shallow boot so might not be sufficient for family load lugging. I've not driven the Audi Etron to be able to comment but the deals on the EQC400 are amazing just now but you don't want to be worrying about depreciation so PCP or lease the best choice I'd say. Loving the Tesla but it's not perfect. Loads to say about it so more videos in the pipeline! 😎
Rwd ev is no bother. Had the mg4 trophy. Handled great and no problems in snow. Traded for the xpower now, not because of the Awd, but because of the POWER 😁
Love your conversation with yourself (at least that’s what u had for days before the video) 🙂 Recognize myself a LOT in these thoughts. I’m 46, have had over 25 different BMWs (also M-models), live in Sweden and like tech besides cars. Got an i3 four years ago and loved it. Then got a Tesla, and now we have the perfect combo. Don’t even miss the ICE BMW cars, even though would love to have a M3 V8 again! The performance and quick steering in the Model 3 Long Range is hard to beat for that price. I got a used -22. Kids are bigger now and we don’t need the space that demands a Model Y and the 3 is more fun to drive. You can always put a roof box on top and put the bikes on the tow bar 👍
EVs more accessible ?- entirely; for the masses ?- no. Ludicrously expensive both to purchase and insure (and potentially charge depending-as you say-on individual circumstances)
I am also looking for a kind of similar car as you. I was looking at a BMW 3 series or an Audi A4 or a Mercedes C class or a Volvo V60 all estate versions. Now i have seen a lynk and co car and that is kind of interesting as well Maybe you should look into that car. They say it is also a Volvo brand.
simple economies, I have a company car so price is out for me but I charged my car to full last weekend on octopus agile and cost me -10p for 280 miles. Of course all about charging at home like you, it is a no brainer
19 Mile electric range. Most of the boot gone because of the battery. And a rather rubbish 2litre petrol engine that is forced to carry the flat battery and electric motor around. After the 19miles are one. Also on a pre payment meter it cost £1 just to do that 19miles on the electric.
I’m 50 and still a car guy. I get bored so quick. I’ve currently got an Audi tts . I’m also thinking of getting a Tesla model 3 next. So this was a good clip to watch.
My cynical comment: I've never been an early adopter, so that's one strike against a pure EV. Today's EVs aren't flexible enough in "refueling" for all the places I go, even if I don't go very often. Nobody can bring me a can of electricity on that road in the middle of nowhere. Another strike. Battery technology is changing so fast, who's to say that the car I buy today won't become insufferably out-of-date in three years? I tend to keep cars for a decade or more before I give them away. Strike three. Yer out! A hybrid might be good, though ...
Thanks for the comment. I am not sure buying one in 2024 would be classed as an early adopter now but if you don't do a lot of long distances then I think they can really work.
Electricity does come in cans that's why someone can't bring you a can of Electricity that's not how it works. They could bring a battery some of those are shapped like cans. Rac actually carry a generator now and can put some charge into the car.
At this point, buying an EV with all their obvious problems and the huge depreciation that will cost you a fortune, then you'll only have yourself to blame, mate. If you're rich and you can afford to throw the money away, then buy an EV. They're fun to drive, but that's it. Long journeys take twice as long because of the charging. Charging in the wet and cold, for fcki g ages, queuing for charges, broken charges, range anxiety, and if that's not enough, they might kill you and your family and destroy your house when it goes into thermal runaway ❤
Thanks for the comment. If you did watch the whole video I do acknowledge near the end that I think buying an EV is not a smart move but certain circumstances I believe they can work for people.

Thanks for the comment. Definitely some bargains on Taycans to be had but wouldn't want to own the car in case the depreciation continues to go wild.

Tires play a large role generally.

The handling on the 530d is apparently horrible in comparison to 330d. Go for a 330d touring 👍
The seats are the issues in the 3 series. They suck...

If you need to pay off a car you CANNOT afford it, the only thing you should ever put on tick in your life time is a house.
