This really hammers on the point that idea that men are most afraid of being made a fool of and cuckcolded, and women are most afraid of being raped and brutalized. Christian's most-devastated hurt in this scene is rooted in being fooled, the Duke's in being cheated on, and Satine lives her fear of being assaulted before someone (who is neither financially beholden to the Duke nor physically smaller than him) realizes her danger and rescues her from the full attempted (although I've no doubt that if she'd lived, she'd still have terrible traumatic nightmares and flashbacks).
P. S. And note that all the while Christian is lamenting Satine's seeming betrayal and connivance, the man she's in fear of and bound to is brutalizing her. Situations and people; they're rarely so simple as they appear, eh?
Thank you for the compliment. : ) No, I'm not, but I've gone through very complex trauma situations. After getting to a safe and stable place, I began to work through them with a good therapist, and did a lot of reading and introspection. One of the few ways you can learn to start recognizing red flags without rushing blindly into a new bad situation to gain yet more negative experience as a teacher is to really pay attention to patterns of behaviour and results, and analyze them with someone who is objective and, if you're lucky, very experienced or well-read in interpreting things with a eye towards human psychology. Both 'healthy' and 'unhealthy'. It makes it easier to see warnings signs from the beginning after you've connected initial behaviours and attitudes to the bad ends and results they most often lead to, and to understand at at least a basic level what social / power dynamics are in play. Then it gets easier to start picking them out in media, too. Which sometimes leads to an even deeper appreciation of the subtle details put into the media that you didn't pick up on before! . In short -- good therapists are a God-send; therapy ftw; critical media analysis can be fascinating!
There's nothing previously in the film to suggest Satine's fear is being raped and brutalized. Sure, in the moment it's happening every woman would feel that fear, but that's not a fear pervasive for Satine throughout the story. If anything, the fear depicted for Satine is being in a cage, stuck in the Moulin Rouge forever.
Everyone comments on Ewan McGregor but can we acknowledge the actress playing Nini for a moment. She’s such a talented dancer and that really shines in this scene
Did anyone catch that cough at 3:50 as a subtle reminder that Christian's love with Satine is, in fact, doomed, just not for the reason implied by this song? Genius! I love little things like this in stories.
The kicker is if you look at Nini's face in part of it, you realize those two legit had a relationship. So the "Unconscious Argentinian" was warning Christian due to experience. At the end of the first segment Nini has this look on her face like WTF ARE YOU DOING LET GO when he's grabbing her wrists. It's both part of the dance and him going *I k n o w* without saying it.
One of the most beautiful song and musical i have ever watched, a conjugation of passion, convenience, betrayal and love, very attached to reality. Whoever was able to transform human passions into this masterpiece no doubt is a great artist.
This scene still gives me chills. Words can't describe how utterly incredible it is. However, has Chocolat EVER been given credit for what he did? Like god BLESS that man
4:55 -- the swell of the music. The stark contrast with Satine's softly sung lyrics. The glitz and glamour of the stage interspersed with scenes of the reality of a dark and ugly assault and attempted rape. This scene is a masterpiece! So many feels going on, you're jerked from one emotion to the next as breathlessly as we imagine the characters feel, out of control and chaotic and overwhelmed. . Side-note, does anyone else think it feels like a really well-done movie trailer??
P. S. Well-done forshadowing of the assault at 4:58 showing the character realizing abruptly the danger Satine is in, his understanding triggered by the argument and song he witnesses, and him silently slipping away to check on and then rescue her.
Its 4:45 and YES!! A BIG THANKS TO CHOCOLAT and to that women. I think they were really concerned about satine, well like always.. because In the begging when she fall from the trapeze those 3 are helping or being emphatic about her. Not like nini who was always jealous or being a little bitch (competitive) with satine
This scene alone is something, but when you watch it in the movie... The dancers, singers, actors it's something absolutly powerful. We can feel the rage, the confusion, it's soo powerful it makes me dizzy.
In concept, this just shouldn't work at all. A highly emotional song sequence set to a tango version of "Roxanne" sounds ridiculous But it does work. Not only does it work, it's absolutely bloody brilliant, mostly due to Jacek Koman's amazing voice.
When i was way younger i did send this to the girl i loved...this scene was so true i still remember it to this day. Back in the day i had the luck that someone uploaded the entire scene in good quality. Love this movie.
I think she is called Catherine O'Connor. She is a professional (ballet) dancer. What it's more impressive for me because ballet dancers are never that good portraying tango (they are always dancing in a stereotypical way, at least that's my experience in my country, country of tango btw Argentina haha) but she was superb! well she and the others but SHE ❤. Props to the choreographer too. Probably that was the reason of this being so good
The Duke tried to take advantage of her? This Rebecca willingly toyed with men's feelings and thought she could get off with no consequence. Who cares!! And omg please, that "rape" scene looked like the cameraman and the director were drunk 😂
What a powerful number! So many emotions burst through with every moment & each note.....creating beauty with so many of humanity's ugliest emotions & urges! This movie reaches deep into my soul each time I watch it!
Santiago was giving Christian real talk during the whole scene. He knows from straight experience of the dangers of doomed love. Secondly, where were the help in the Gothic Tower when Duke was about to savagely rape Satine. Granted, Christian was powerless to do anything about it, less the show be screwed n both lovers would be in the shit. God bless Chocolat for stepping up n knocking the Duke the eff out. God knows I would. FREEDOM, BEAUTY, TRUTH N LOVE. PURA VIDA, BABY

Idr the name of the man warning Christian in the very beginning of the clip, but ironically, his actor sells the full depth of his character's dark, cynical emotions about the reality of being in love with a prostitute extremely well. I 100% believed in his backstory by the end of those two sentences, and idek what it really was.
They're not, actually. Ziedler has borrowed a significant amount of money from the Duke and attempted to use Satine in order to keep him hooked. Ziedler needs to put on an amazing show, which Christian is helping to write, in order to be able to repay the Duke. Christian and Satine, however, have complicated the situation by falling in love with each other which could cause the Duke to demand his money back when Ziedler can't afford to pay him. This is probably why the Moulin Rouge at the start of the film is shown as abandoned -- the Duke must have taken his revenge and demanded his money, forcing Ziedler to close the Moulin Rouge because he couldn't pay..
