I agree, I don't know why they aren't making it easier to find/search people on patreon. It seems like a no brainer to have it there, even if you are also building subscribers elsewhere. If they truly believed that it was that you found your people elsewhere, they wouldn't have ANY discover pages at all. They only show super successful patreon creators and don't seem to let people who need to find more subscribers, it doesn't seem fair. Know it makes them look good to show off the big fish, but helping the little fish will help patreon in the long term too.
I'm a bit of a late starter to Patreon as I was engaged elsewhere on other stuff but it's interesting to hear your observations and comments about marketing funnels - and the general principal of what Patreon actually is and what / how it could be used within a business model. For many course creators, it is actually a very good platform and if you are not worried about the visual element of a fancy looking site and more interested in delivering solid content, I can see Patreon becoming more useful and a very efficient way of delivering content to those willing to subscribe to you... Good luck in your endeavours.
hey , wish you all the luck and best for patreon and your webtoon comic. I only got to find you cause of the podcast you did with Ahmed Aldoori. Maybe / possibly do more podcast with other channels to build a larger following. that could work. Also, I was following webtoons for quite a while and follow many artist but strangely I never got your comics as a recommendation, maybe its not the same tags as the current comics i follow so i wasnt recommended but im happy i got to see your story.
Good points and very nicely argumented on both sides. Searching on a specific name should work, though. Donations are actually illegal in my country (Finland) so I think their new development path is good. I think pay-per-release (product/video/whathaveyou) generally doesn't work, because people don't feel comfortable with the idea, that they're not in control of what they are paying.
Thanks Jason. i love Graphtreon. One of the few tools that really gives us honest insight into the industry of independent producers. I've always wanted to do comics but it just never seemed economically viable. This kind of marketing research by guys like you who actually try it is so critical, but I know it's difficult due to the constant deadlines. If your opinions change please post another video, or lead us to any podcasts where you have talked about it. Art skill tutorials are fun, but marketing is where comics thrive or die.
As you say in your Patreon header: this way you can make truly independent content, the fail is for Patreon, I don't know why they sell theirselves as a benefaction platform, maybe somebody uses it this way but I'm seeing most of us ask for money in change of a good or service and this is buy not donations. And this difference could mark the point of view so hard in the way to face the Patreon campaign!! The strength of Patreon is allow everybody to publish without the editors filter.
Basically, as an artist you have to draw smut. Sakimichan went from drawing innocent bandwagon fanart to drawing lewd banwagon fanart to keep her almost 40k a month patreons. And the list has a crapton of adult game creators. To fail on patreon you have to not have popular podcasts or you have to not be a nsfw artist
Thank you for the info, and advice. I am scared to death of Pyramid or get rich crap. I don't see patreon in that way however I tread lightly when I walk into any of the to good to be true stuff. I have published 1 book on Amazon, and am working on the second volume. I have donated illustrations to Wikipedia, and send them 5 dollars a month. I am considering giving between 15 and 30 to a military history channel on YT, but I have also considered Pat for my Channel. There is always a lot to consider. So TY again for the info and insight.
I agree with you on the Books/art paying for themselves and really get a bad taste in my mouth about asking, or begging for money. I would like to go to WW2 ships though for research and I could see how donations could help with that, as I also work a regular job. My Book hasn't sold in the thousands, LOL. but it has been making me about 30 dollars a month. Almost a tank of gas in my 72 mustang. TY for this video, I subbed.
Is it time to start giving to your pateron? I got some money I want to spend to support you, but I know you were saying to hold off a bit until you got Patreon structured the way you want it
Hey Matt! Thanks man. I think the basic tiers are in place now and probably won't change much. I still need to make the video and tightening up everything on the home page but it's pretty close to how it will remain for 2018 now. :)
Your patreon has some really good rewards! Free soft cover of your book for as little as $5 when book comes out!? Wowzers. Have you thought about putting your patreon link in your Instagram page. I love your video's n can't wait to see you grow! Massive inspiration to me. Thanks for your video's keep them coming!!
I have been more quiet about the patreon these last few months because I have had to switch my focus from Phobos (the patreon book) to a commissioned project and getting Sithrah printed. But once I start back up with Phobos I'll probably switch most of my links to Patreon again.
Great video, very good insights for fellow Patreon users. Although I was constantly noticing you weren’t saying it as Pay-tree-on 😄 (or maybe you are just saying it really fast...)
Dude can you please help me!? (Or anyone reading this??) I've stupidly converted my flats layer from RGB to CMYK and now the magic wand tool isn't selecting the individual areas anymore! It selects tiny pixels only :( Its taken me so long and was a very detailed page and I'm screwing. I love your channel and you have helped me a lot in the process of colouring my first comic. I would really appreciate any info on a quick way to rectify this, if one even exists.
I hate Patreon's stupid policy on not letting folks find things organically. That just means they are lazy. You could probably get 10-20% more off of Patreon. Lazy website. They get money transactions from us. Patreon is more like UA-cam and less like Paypal. Bad arguement.

PATREON is not a social media platform. This is 1000% correct.
Definitely agree about broadening exposure. Your work is unique and just gorgeous and deserve all the attention in the world.
Every time I hear that "oh yeah baby" from the intro song I imagine the frog you have in your office singing

I am an old artist new to Patreon And just starting to fill out my pages. This has been a very helpful insight (and promo ;-) )
Put your patreon link in the description please.
Great info Jason! Hope all is well!

Love the format with drawing while having a meaningful monologue.
Great stuff as always Jason.
Thank you!
That's cool i'm looking forward to your videos of what you have done at dreamworks and your after effects explanation videos too

the same goes to the likes of mike inel
Actually,Iam quite good at erotic art,so you have given me the impudence to carry on! Thanks☺
For some reason I feel like I'm going to fail more now then ever..
What if you’re the comic writer? How does setting up the patreon work if you’re not an artist?
Thank you for this video. Very helpful
Great stuff !
Could I continue on UA-cam or I have to move on PATREON?

Jason Brubaker always putting it out there like it is
Can you post a comic for patreons or just videos?

Listening to you about doing tutorials on Patreon I was wondering why not doing it on Skillshare for example? Another interesting business model(?)

For god's sake, stop referring to Patreon as Patron. Those are two completely different things.
nice drawing!
Ho,
Very good analysis on your situation from a marketing viewpoint. 😏
Best Regards,

Jake Lee Can you just convert it back to RGB? If not then try adjusting you magic wand tolerance up to a bigger number.
tried converting back to no avail, but the tolerance value increase totally worked! Thanks so much man! Page saved :D

I recommend you Gary Vaynerchuck and Sunny Lenarduzzi's channel, also Video Influencers ♡ You can do awesome things to market yourself!
