- I've been sitting on this footage for months. When Eliza and I were invited by our friend Fr. Ignacio Gonzalez to spend the weekend at St. Anselm's Abbey, I was torn -- not about going, but over whether to film. I love making videos. I love editing videos and thinking about content creation. But I also knew this was a really unique opportunity. In the end, I chose to only capture a few moments and reflections on my phone so that we could spend the rest of the time unplugged, in prayer, and in conversation with Fr. Ignacio.
It was a beautiful time, and I hope this video expresses some of that.
Oh, and we got a private tour of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. So, that was cool.

BTW I heard Fr. Chad Ripperger say that he knew he wanted to be a Priest since he was *4* years old when he would attend daily Mass with his mom❣️ And that the conviction never changed through his growing up! And now he's one of the greatest Priests in America or anywhere I believe❤️❤️❤️✝️✝️✝️🙏💙🙏

I used to live in a monastery as a novice monk. It was such an experience. It's beautiful to see young and married believers visit these hospitals for the soul. In Christ.

@@GospelSimplicity I did! I think it was after I had visited the first time. It was part of what made me more seriously consider Catholicism. I have since decided against becoming Catholic; that door is closed for now... but it could be reopened.

Catholicism is often seems like a faith in an organization, system, and saints rather than having Christ as a sure foundation. The enormous amount of required dogmas, total consecration to Mary, and lack of UNIQUE supernatural love (as compared to other churches) lead me to reject the claims of "one true" church.
What struck me about my first monastic visit decades ago, was that the sacred silence was "loud". I had never experienced an environment like it before. In that Carmelite monastery with strict papal enclosure, nuns gathered to pray Liturgy of Hours seven times a day before the Blessed Sacrament. Inspiring!

I was raised protestant (now orthodox), so the idea of monasteries was a foreign concept to me. But now that i do know more what they are, i completely agree that the world needs more monasteries. What an amazing gift they are.

Can't live without this beautiful church and is tradition. 70% of those who leave Catholic Church never new it. More Protestants should be open to the idea of visiting monasteries or even just Catholic Churches and adoration chapels.

I have been watching you since before you were married. Congratulations!!! I just felt led to share with you that I came to faith in Christ Jesus through the Calvary Chapel Movement. After 22 years, I felt led to begin a journey into the Catholic denomonation. I had heard so many discouraging words about the Catholic Church and needed to see for myself. I attended Mass, joined RCIA, received confirmation and first Holy Communion. I'm in my third year and have been blessed to have a Beneductine Monk as a spiritual director. I still have many questions and some areas of the teaching of the church I don't agree with, but for now, I'm not ready to give up. Thank you for your videos. I pray for more unity amongst all Christians.

I attended a catholic school and I have been to weekend retreat and the peace that is felt is incomparable, there is a smoothness in the air and one feels so good, and yes the world needs more monks and nuns.

After your interaction at St. John Cantius I had thought for a while that perhaps you and Eliza would be open to a visit with Fr. Thomas Loya in Elmer Glen.
He’s a Byzantine rite priest and iconographer. He’s brilliant, humble, fascinating, and has such a truly beautiful world view and a desire for Union and harmony through Truth and love and beauty.
I have a soft spot in my heart for the Byzantine rite as I was blessed in my life to have one of the Eoiscopal priests, Fr. Doug Lorig, who was one of the first priestly episcopal converts to be allowed to take advantage of Pope John Paul II’s invitation to the special ordinariate. He taught at my high school, and we would attend the Byzantine rite Masses sporadically. He was such a beautiful, gentle soul, and he left such an incredible family. Fr. Loya reminds me of him in many ways, just add in mind blowing artistic ability.
Just a thought.

The world does need more monks.
There can also be lay friars. Living a chaste,simplicity and obedient to Gods will pleases God just the same. I’m one and it is very rewarding in the sense that God is your spouse and one dedicates more of their self to him.
We need more monks in this world. They are a tremendously special and precious vocation. The truth is that imagining a world without monasteries is terrifying. What keeps the world from collapsing is its constant and perpetual prayer. What a desire to make our lives a river from which only prayer flows!
Glad you're still open-minded on things. That shows great maturity and thoughtfulness. If I can give you some unsolicited (and perhaps unwanted) advice, I too was once a Protestant Pastor, albeit for only 2 years. Went to Bible college and studied lots of theology in life. There are a lot of moving parts and things to consider about it all, no doubt. One thing I want to say to you though. One simple (simplistic?) way of answering the question of "what faith group is correct" is to apply simple and basic common sense, as follows: "Would God make us sort through truths like a barrel of denominational marbles and make us stand there until we pick the right one to find the truth?". This may sound naive, but this basic question sealed it for me. The answer to the question is "of course not". And then we move on to "what is the most widely known and widely geographic faith group with the richest historical heritage?" The answer is an obvious one: the Catholic Church. Sometimes we theologically-minded folk end up outsmarting ourselves. Just something for you to ponder. Blessings to you!
I don't want to disrespect your journey but your question presumes that we, as finite creatures, can understand what God would do or not do, beyond what He has revealed to us. I talk with many Atheists and they use the same reasoning, saying things like, "if God wanted me to believe in him then he wouldn't hide behind clouds," or "If God was real he wouldn't have written his books 1000 years ago before they had electricity and TVs to spread the word."
When we think we know what God would or wouldn't do, all we are doing is deigning God by looking in the mirror and when we do that we always design a very shallow God.
@@blusheep2 "beyond what He has revealed to us." That's the rub. You are assuming that God only chose one vehicle to reveal His truth (the Bible). Seeing that Scripture tells us that the Church is the pillar and ground of truth, that argument cannot be sustained. The Church ("called out assembly", or "ecclesia" is a united, earthly entity - not one "theoretically in the clouds." This is where Protestantism really fails the test of credulity. If there was a paradigm shift, as the Protestants claim, of the Canon of Scripture being closed after Nicea, Scripture - nor any Church Fathers - mention it nowhere.
@@N1IA-4 I'm a charismatic and so I do believe God still speaks to us, though its more on a personal level.
The early church didn't invent scripture. Scripture revealed itself to them. The early church fathers were sourcing it well before any official canonization, and they were using the concept of scriptural authority in their teachings and not relying on their own revelations. Even their authority as the church was sourced from scripture. Jesus Himself, though delivering to us, new revelation, still sourced His authority from scripture. The Bereans, when confronted with Christ, are praised for searching the scripture to see if what they were told was true.
The church that Jesus spoke to was not the Roman Catholic Church. The early church wouldn't even recognize the RCC today, nor its doctrines. It was just "the church," the bride of Christ made up of all believers from every nation, who are priests and temples in His kingdom.
The authority of the Catholic Church is a presumptive one. It reads into every verse that says "church" as speaking about itself without cause to assume that. Peter is certainly special in scripture, being mentioned more then all the others put together but the stories in scripture don't present him as dominant. Even his own short letters fail to claim any authority beyond His experience with Christ. He Himself says He was called to the Gentiles, a specific segment of Christianity at the time and the early church fathers who speak to the bedrock of the church in Rome mention Peter and Paul together.
Please don't mistake what I'm saying. There isn't a problem with church leadership and there isn't a problem with some sort of lineage. I'm just saying that none of that is scriptural and is therefore invented by later traditions. These traditions over time began to add authority which is the common plight of man, by inserting doctrines of infallibility (unbiblical) and supremacy (unbiblical.) I have no problem honoring a Pope that does the work of the Lord in truth and proper submission to Christ.
I'm starting to say to much, so I'll just sum up. We all agree that the Bible is scripture, in part, because these are the words of the apostles themselves. The authority assigned to later leaders is not from that source but assumed to be true over time. Its a philosophical, not a biblical position. I trust scripture and the scripture doesn't give any indication of further revelation from a line of infallible bishops that claim supremacy.
@@blusheep2 It simply isn't the case that Jesus sourced all of His authority from the Scriptures alone. His authority was from God the Father, primarily. He did quote the Scriptures, but nowhere did He ever state that only Scripture was the highest authority. Nor does an Apostle say this. It is merely assumed by Protestants that, since Scripture is God-breathed, it must be above all other authority. Since Scripture states the CHURCH is the pillar and ground of truth, one cannot reasonable place their authority on a lower plane than Scripture. Even Scripture doesn't say that about itself. Again this is merely assumed by Protestants. No early church father was Sola Scriptura, as much as Protestants want to read that into their writings that honor Scripture and elevate it. The idea that the early church "would not recognize the Catholic Church today" is an assumption not based in reality. Doctrinal development is unavoidable even with a Protestant. That's like saying "the early Church would not recognize the Trinity as it is articulated today." The mere fact that Sola Scriptura has resulted in thousands of differing interpretations and faith groups should be a huge red flag to the non-Catholic.
@@N1IA-4 Yes of course. Jesus was a source of revelation but when He sourced His authority to the Pharisees He did so in two ways. By first appealing to the scriptures, and second by appealing to the works He had done.
Think about this slowly. The scriptures couldn't say that the scriptures were the highest authority. Neither Jesus nor the apostles could say such a thing. Why? This is what I want you to think slowly about, because the reasoning is sound. Jesus knew that scripture was not yet completed. He couldn't refer to something as a final authority until it was finalized. The same goes for the apostles because the apostles were inspired by the Holy Spirit.
The scripture doesn't state that the CHURCH is the pillar and ground of truth and it certainly doesn't say the Roman Catholic CHURCH is. Do you notice how you are forced to use scripture in order to state your case that the CHURCH is the pillar and ground of truth.
You say that no early church father was for Sola Scriptura. Can you quote for me from an early church father that doesn't quote from scripture to make their point but rather relies on the personal revelation of God? I'm not talking about fathers that came 300 years after Christ. I'm talking about the early ones who were in the memory of the apostles or the apostles direct disciples.
Sola Scriptura is not a doctrine. Its a theological philosophy. It begins with the apostles as a chosen authority to spread the gospel.
Its not an assumption that the early church fathers wouldn't recognize the church today. I believe they would roll over in their graves if they saw it. I'm reading the early writings. I've read the Didache, Epistle of Barnabas, 1 Clement, 2 Clement, and none of them speak to a pope like figure in Peter. None of them speak about Mary at all. None of them speak to their infallibility. None of them speak of the modern mass. None of them speak about confessing your sins to priests.
I agree that doctrinal development is unavoidable but for the Protestant doctrinal development proceeds from the Bible and for the RCCs it can proceed in spite of the Bible.
The doctrine of the Trinity is entirely Biblical. When I talk to anti-trinitarians I never go to the teachings of the RCC. I go to the Bible because that is where it is found. The RCC didn't create it. It wasn't revealed to them uniquely. They found it in the scripture. So the lineage of that doctrine is the same as mine. Scripture.
So the right to interpret scripture in your own study has led to many denominations. True.
The restriction against interpretation by the Council of Trent has led to one set of doctrine. True.
How is this better. You have a dictatorship that tells you that you CANT interpret scripture and so you have an organization that isn't allowed to question anything about it. So there is no accountability. How is that superior other then, now you don't have to think?

My wife and I visited a convent. We did the night prayers with them. We got to meet and hang out with all nuns and hear their life stories. These nuns where true modern day super heros. My wife and I enjoyed ourselves. I strongly recommend others to do so.
I love how she picked up on the parallels between monasticism and marriage, also, I love how your glasses match!

Mariage and Monastics life are similar, vocations, how you chose to live God's love, by dedicating your life to a family, or by dedicating it to the Church, God's great family.

I personally love the couple. May God bless you. I'm a Catholic. I Wish I could be there. Everyday I listen to Sacred songs, to be specific Gregorian chant. Catholic church is like a universe. We can't grasp all the reachness of it.
You would enjoy the Monastery of Our Lady of Clear Creek in Hulbert, Oklahoma. It has almost 60 monks!
You can also make a small pilgrimage to the monastery apparently.

Fun backstory to the monastery: There was a professor at K.U back in the day named John Senior who started a "great books" program at the university. The program was not catholic by any means (though he himself was Catholic), but MANY of the students who went thru the program ended up converting to Catholicism. Several of the students went to become benedictine monks at an abbey called Fontgombault in France. Those same monks then came back to Oklahoma to start their own benedictine monastery- all because of a program that focused on classic literature and the good, true, and beautiful. (John senior also wrote a book called "the restoration of Christian culture" which you might add to your long list of books to read!) @@GospelSimplicity

I strongly recommend you to read the Paul Eudokimov's text about the conjugal priesthood if you haven't red it already. I'm catholic and I red it a few months before I got married 12 years ago. There is a continuity between the monk spirituality and the married lay man. Just an amazing aproach of this great orthodox theolog. In Domino!

You should take her to St. Nina's Georgian Orthodox Monastery in Union Bridge. Its not far from Frederick. I'd also recommend one of Elder Ephraim's monasteries in PA, Holy Protection or Nativity of the Theotokos or the Romanian one founded by Mother Alexandra (formerly Princess Ileana) in Ellwood City, PA.
My best friend came to Christ because he stumbled into that monastery one day after losing his mom. I will always be grateful to them for that.

I am so proud to be Catholic
I am an Anglican and have stayed at R.C. monasteries/ convents many times on retreats. It is normal for me. Generally speaking protestants have far to much noise in churches and would benefit from the silence that is found in the monastic traditions ( including, anglica, orthodox...... ).
This totally counter-intuitive since Thomas Cromwell is well known for having his goon squad harass, murder monks, and steal their property.
Gospel simplicity, if you love Jesus, we catholics love him too. And you are seeing it before your eyes how we express it. ❤😇🙏

Im a Anglican exploring a monastic life, I agree we need more nuns and monks, to me if we lose this tradition we lose a deep essential truth of the Christian faith, a idea, a being of peace, of love and tranquillity, monasteries and nunneries are deep wells of these things, they pour this out into the world through prayer and in some orders action. I pray for all these people living in these places and am so thankful for their work especially as a lot of them enter their twilight years, I pray for a revival in people willing to give up their comfort and freedom, to serve the world in a unique and holy way, to praise God without ceasing, to serve the Lord with their very lives and to removed tepid faith and let the dazzling light of Christ shine out from us to heal this broken and damaged world, through love and through prayer.
I love that the Anglican church still has monasteries unlike many Protestant denominations
The monks and the nuns are the closest to perfection.
Most of the monasteries around here have closed.
The closest ones to me are near Binghamton, NY and Brookline, Massachusetts...
( Both of which are Orthodox)
Not sure where you are, but there's also St. Charbel's Monastery in Petersham, MA. They're Catholics (Maronites, not Latin/Roman) I've never been but I've heard good things from visitors

Do you know about Oblate programs? Many monastic houses have them. Usually open to all, both Catholic and Protestant, men and women.

You would also love St. Michael's Abbey in Southern CA. It's a Norbertine Abbey. They have 70 men there! Jordan Peterson made a stop there...they love and welcome guests!

That's a smart wife you have. The religious life IS like marriage, marriage to Christ and His Church, a life-long commitment and sacrifice of love. Religious life fulfills Jesus' evangelical counsels to poverty ("sell everything and follow me"), chastity ("some make themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom"), and obedience ("not my will"). The vow of chastity fulfills Paul's counsel to be like himself, unmarried (1 Cor 7).
Tell me, where in Protestantism are these Scriptural counsels fulfilled??

I can see your wife is a good spiritual counselor: she said something about prayers to Christ is like our married life! She said this as after meeting with the abbot? , fr something or other. I could see your wife has it correct to praise the squirrel and cat? Anyways it’s important to bring one’s surroundings out in praise of God. Animal’s and , trees and flowers reflect Gods presence, his glory. It’s important that we see this. I was happy your wife brought this out in this video.
